親子英語教室で、絵本を読み聞かせ日本との習慣（文化）の違い（４） I noticed that during recess in the elementary schools, the kids will run laps around the school yard. This confused me greatly because in America we only run laps when we are in trouble. Running laps in considered a punishment. I couldn’t figure out how the entire school was getting in trouble every week! Eventually it was explained to me that this isn’t seen as a punishment in Japan. It made me laugh since here is a way that our customs are very different! 小学校の休み時間に子供たちが校庭を何周も走っているのを見ました。アメリカでは運動場を走るというのは何か問題を起こしたときなので、これには非常に戸惑いました。ランニングはある種の罰なのです。私にはどうして毎週学校中が問題を起こすのだろうと理解できませんでした。結局日本ではこれは罰ではないということが分かったのですが、私たちの習慣の違いに笑わされました。 Another thing I have noticed is that the kids all spend time cleaning the school after lunch. Everyone helps, even the very youngest kids. This is not something that happens in America. While most children have cleaning responsibilities at their homes, we never clean the schools ourselves. Every school hires a Janitor, which is a man(or woman) who cleans and repairs the school as his job. I think it’s a great practice because I think it makes the kids much more respectful of the school and take care or it better. I think we should start having cleaning time in the United States. もう一つ気がついたことは、給食の後で全校の児童が校舎の掃除をすることです。最年少の児童も参加します。これはアメリカではありません。ほとんどの子供たちは家庭では責任を持って仕事をしますが、学校では自分たちで掃除することはありません。それぞれの学校は公務員さん（男性の場合も女性の場合もありますが）を雇って掃除や学校の修繕をしてもらいます。しかし私は子供たちに自分たちの学校を尊重し、大事にしようという気持ちを育てるのに、掃除はとても良い方法だと思います。アメリカでも掃除の時間を設けるべきだと思います。 These are just a few things that I have noticed since coming to Japan and I love learning about them! There are so many things in my daily life that I never give any thought to until I see someone doing it a different way. I think it’s a great learning experience and there are many things I’ve learned that are great habits and I hope to continue doing them ever after I leave Japan. これらは私が日本に来てから気づいたほんの少しのことですが、違いを学ぶことは大好きです。日々の暮らしの中には、誰かが違ったやり方でやるのを見るまでは、全く考えもしなかったようなことがたくさんあります。それは経験しながら学ぶということで、素晴らしい習慣や、日本を去った後も続けたいと思うようなことがらも多いです。
