今号はオールセインツに留学中の上田さんのレポートをお届けします。いろいろな機会に恵まれ、自分の英語力向上にも気づくこ
とができる瞬間も増えているようです。
高校 2 年生上田茉尋さん【オーストラリア・All Saints’ College（本校姉妹校）】
「自分自身の成長に気づける瞬間」
In Perth, it is currently the middle of winter; however, it is not as cold as winter in
Japan. The weather is a comfortable temperature. We can spend the days in light
clothes.
Term two finished and we had winter holidays for two weeks. I went to Olivia’s house
for a homestay during the holidays. She went to Japan to study abroad this year. We
went to many places and experienced precious things. First we went to watch a
production – the program was “Romeo and Juliet”. It was performed by students who
elected to take Drama class. I looked forward to it because I had never watched it before
and I did not know the story of Romeo and Juliet well, so I thought this experience
would become a precious opportunity. Also, I met my first and second host family there.
When I talked with them, I noticed that I could tell what I wanted to say, quickly and
accurately. I realized my English is improving. Perhaps because we went to the
production on the last day, the hall had a full audience. I was
really surprised because the degree of perfection was at a very
high standard. I felt like I was in the world of Romeo and Juliet
in the moment. I heard that the students not only perform, but that they also
produce music, lighting and smoke, and usher people to their seats, etc. Everyone
performed so well that I thought they were like professional stage actors. They were
using Shakespeare’s English so understanding what they were saying was very
difficult for me; however, I had a wonderful time. Recently, I’ve had many dreams in
English, and I felt happy every time. I will do my best to improve my English skills.
現在、パースは冬ですが、日本の冬ほど寒くありません。とても過ごしやすい気候で、日中は薄着でも過ごす
ことができます。二学期が終わり、二週間程の冬休みがありました。私は、休暇中のみオリビアさんのお家にホ
ームステイさせてもらいました。彼女は今年、短期留学のため日本へ行っています。私は色々な所へ行き、貴重
な体験をしました。まず初めに私たちは「ロミオとジュリエット」の劇を観に行きました。学校で演劇の授業を
選択している生徒達が日頃の練習の成果を発表します。私は今まで一度もこの演目を観たことが無かったので、
とても楽しみでした。物語の内容もあまり詳しく知らなかったので、この経験は貴重なものになると思いました。
また、会場で一家族目と二家族目のホストファミリーに会うことができました。皆さんと話している時、言いた
いことを素早く正確に伝えられるようになってきていることに気付き、英語力の上達を実感することができまし
た。公演最終日に行ったせいか、ホールは観客でいっぱいでした。そして私は本当に驚きました。なぜなら、全
てにおいて完成度が非常に高かったからです。私は一瞬でロミオとジュリエットの世界にいる様な気分になりま
した。生徒達はパフォーマンスをするだけで無く、劇中歌のプロデュースや照明、スモーク、席の案内係まで全
て自分達自身でやっていると聞きました。全員が一生懸命にパフォーマンスをしていて、まるでプロの役者の舞
台を観ているようでした。Shakespeare の英語での公演だったので、彼らが何を言っているのか理解するのはと
ても難しかったですが、素晴らしい時間を過ごすことができました。
最近では、英語で夢をみる機会も増えてきました。毎回、嬉しく感じています。引き続き、英語力向上の為、
最大限の努力をしていきたいです。
