L2 We Can All Make a Difference
Part 1 What is the Ryan’s Well Foundation/ and/ what are its goal?
Water is one of/ the most important resources/ in our lives.// In some countries/
however,/ people can only use/ dirty water/ everyday.// These country also have/
many other problems/ and/ the governments can’t improve/ the water system/ by
themselves.// What can we do/ to help them?//
We can get a good idea/ from the Ryan’s Well Foundation.// The Foundation is an NPO,
or nonprofit organization.// Its goal are to bring clean water/ to developing countries /
and/ to educate young people/ about the need for clean water.//
The foundation now has several projects/ in African countries.// Who started/ such
an active organization?// It was Ryan Hreljac,/ an ordinary primary school boy/ in
Canada.//
It all began/ in 1998.// Ryan was six years old then/ and/ a student in Nancy Prest’s
first-grade class.// One day,/ Ms. Prest said that/ in Africa,/ people were dying/
because they didn’t have clean water/ to drink.// She also explained,/ “In Africa,/”
a single penny will buy a pencil/ and/ 70 dollars will pay for/ an entire well.”//

Part 2 After Ryan told his parents/ about the problem with water / in Africa,
what did he start to do?
On the same day/ at home,/ Ryan told his parents/ about the problem/ with water/ in
Africa.// Then/ he asked them for 70 dollars.// But/ his mother said to him,/ “Ryan,/
70 dollars is a lot of money.// If you’re really serious/ about getting the money,/ you
can do extra work/ around the house.//
Doing extra housework was/ not hard for Ryan,/ because he had a clear goal.// Even
when he found out that/ one well in Africa would actually cost/ 2.000 dollars,/ he didn’t
give up.//
Ryan’s project gained/ the local media’s attention.// Soon/ news about him traveled/
all over Canada.// People were moved/ by his story/ and/ they made donations/ one
after another.//In 1999/ at the age of seven,/ he reached his goal of 2.000 dollars.//
Ryan’s first well was built/ in a village/ near Angolo Primary School/ in Northern
Uganda.//Ryan himself selected/ the location,/ because he wanted to save/ as many
children of his age as possible/ with his well.//

“When I am 12,/ I will come to Uganda/ to see you.”//
Ryan had a chance to visit Jimmy’s school/ with his family/ in July 2000.// He was
nine/ then,/ and/ it was three years earlier/ than he promised/ in the letter.// When
he arrived/ at Angolo Primary School/ a tall, thin boy was/ waiting for him.// He said,/
“Hello, Ryan./ I’m Jimmy.// Ryan only knew jimmy/ from his letters.// On that day,/
he finally met/ his pen pal/ in person.//
Jimmy took Ryan’s hand/ and/ led him/ to the well.// An old man from the village/
made a welcome speech/ there.// He said,/ “Look around at our children.// You can
see/ they’re healthy.// This is thanks to/Ryan and our friends in Canada.// For us,/
water is life.//

Part 4 What is Ryan’s message/ to young people?
Since Ryan started/ the Ryan’s Well Foundation,/ it has become/ much bigger/ and
has built/ over 600 wells/ in many countries.// He has met many famous people/ and/
received many prizes.// Although the foundation has developed fast,/ Ryan’s original
goal remains the same:/ to get clean, safe water for people/ without access to it/
now.//
“We can all make a difference.”// This is Ryan’s message/ to young people.// He says
to them,/ “The world is a huge jigsaw puzzle.// You have to find/ where your piece fits/
My piece is clean water.//”
