JET Representative Speech at the Welcome Ceremony

JET 新規来日者歓迎式を県庁にて行いました。
今回の「宮崎国際交流レポート」は、この式典において新規来日
者代表あいさつを行ったデヴィン・レッキオさんのあいさつ文を
掲載します。

*On August 18th, 2014, a welcome ceremony was held for new JET Programme participants. This
month’s issue of Miyazaki International Exchange Report features the representative speech given by Mr.
Devin Recchio.
(JET Programme: conducted by local authorities and other organizations, the Programme aims to improve
foreign language education in Japan and promote internationalization at the grassroots level by inviting
college graduates from foreign countries to local government offices as well as public and private schools)
初めまして、皆さん。只今、8 月 6 日に宮崎県の北端にある延岡市に着任した新しい国際交流員として
勤めさせていただいているデヴィン・レッキオと申します。スピーチは得意分野ではないのでご理解の
ほどよろしくお願いします。
Hello everyone. It’s nice to meet you all. My name is Devin Recchio. I am the new CIR for Nobeoka City,
which is in the northern corner of Miyazaki Prefecture. I’m not particularly good at giving speeches, so I
request your understanding and patience today.
と言いながら、宮崎県の JET 参加者の代表者として皆さんの前に立ってスピーチをさせて頂くことを誠
に非常に嬉しく思っています。
I am thrilled and honored to be standing before you giving this speech as the representative of the JET
participants of Miyazaki Prefecture.
まず、自治体国際化協会とそれぞれの JET プログラムに関わっている自治体の皆様に、私達 JET 参加者
に日本に来る機会を与える為にこの蒸し暑い夏に耐えながら書類の山をかき分けて下さったことにお
礼申し上げたいと思います。本当にありがとうございました。
First I would like to thank CLAIR and all of the independent organizations that are associated with the JET
program for their hard work trudging through mountains of paperwork, enduring this hot summer heat so
that we could have the opportunity to come to Japan. Really and truly, thank you very much.
さて、本番に入りましょう。実は日本に来る前に私は色々なことを心配していました。その心配に伴う
緊張感は最初のところ、かなり酷いものでした。しかし、JET の担当者と延岡市にいらっしゃる方々の
優しさと心遣いを見て安心しました。その緊張感は一気に解消したという訳ではありませんが、少しず
つ職場や日本の生活に慣れていく内になくなりつつあります。皆さんも似たような経験をしていると思
います。
As a matter of fact, before I came to Japan I was worried about a lot of things and the nervousness that
came with those worries was pretty terrible in the beginning. However, when I saw the kindness and
concern for others that the JET program administrators and people in Nobeoka displayed, I was greatly
relieved. Yet, that nervousness did not dissipate instantly. It has slowly been disappearing as I become
more and more familiar with my workplace and life in Japan. I suspect you all have had similar
experiences.
それは JET プログラムの一つの大きな価値があると
ころだと、私は個人的に思います。異文化に馴染む
ことによって、自分の文化をより深く理解できるよ
うになるし、同時に異文化を持っている人の気持ち
や心を覗き込む機会でもあります。その経験を通じ
て皆さんはどう変わるのか、自分でも予想できない
と思いますが、その末に待っている国際理解と人間
同士としての同情はなかなか手に入らないものです。
どうか、この経験の可能性を見逃さいように常に用
心して下さい。
I feel very strongly that this is one of the aspects of
the JET program that is of great value. By
familiarizing ourselves with a foreign culture we can
understand our own more clearly, and at the same
time, we are given an opportunity to glimpse the
feelings and minds of people with a culture different
from our own. I’m sure none of us can imagine how
we will have changed through this experience, but
the understanding of different cultures and friendship
as human beings rather than members of different communities that awaits us is a rare and precious
thing. Please, do not allow the possibilities of this experience to pass you by.
なお、JET プログラムは重いものばかりではありません。自分の国の代表者という責任があるとはいえ、
その中の日常生活における会話や冗談など、当たり前のことも、異文化の中で経験することによってま
た新しい面白みや側面に気が付くだろうと思います。日本語と日本文化に隠れている数多くの楽しい慣
用句やおとぎ話や祭りなど豊富な楽しいものを探し出して下さい。
Still, the JET program is not all serious. Though we have the responsibility of being representatives of our
respective countries, I think we will discover new and interesting elements of things that we may have
taken for granted in our daily lives, like conversation and humor, through experiencing them in a different
culture. There is a rich abundance of fun idioms, fairy tales, and festivals in Japanese language and
culture. Please seek out many little treasures with your time here.
6 年間日本語を勉強してきてなんとなく日本語が出来るようになったと思いますが、私はまだまだ本質
的に無知であることに相違はありません。その徴証として私が毎日新しい表現や慣用句にたくさん出会
う事を挙げられます。しかし、それはあくまで言語的なものにしか過ぎなく、その裏には、文化の基盤
を形作る掴みどころがない人間の心があります。その一人一人の人から学んだ表現や伝統を以て、その
気持ちや考え方に見習い、自分をよりいい人間にすることが出来ると思います。そして、それはどんな
言語的なレベルであるかに問わず誰にも出来ることだと思います。
I’ve studied Japanese for six years, and I think I’m able to speak it fairly well, but there is no doubt that I
am still essentially ignorant about it. As evidence, I can point to the fact that I encounter new expressions
and idioms every day; however, to do so would reduce the language to a linguistic formula. Beyond such
things lies the foundation that forms culture, the elusive thing we call the human heart and mind. I
believe we can learn traditions and expressions from each individual person and through so doing we can
touch upon their feelings and ways of thinking, ultimately making ourselves into better human beings
through careful thought and consideration for these experiences. This is something that anyone can do,
regardless of their linguistic ability.
人間として、学ぶことにきりがありません。どんなに狭い分野にも学ぶことにきりがありません。しか
し、私達が日本に来たのは文化や言語の広い海の一部を少しでも教え合う為でした。日常生活に慣れて
くれば退屈に感じることが出てくるかもしれません。それでも明日か明後日、もしくは来週に新しい発
見と理解がきっと待っています。そのことを待ち構えながら楽しくやっていきましょう！以上です。あ
りがとうございました。
As human beings there is no end to our studies. No matter how narrow a field of study, there is never an
end. But we have come to Japan to share our limited knowledge of the vast ocean that is language and
culture, and to in turn be taught about it. As we become more and more familiar with our daily lives here,
some things may start to feel familiar and boring, but tomorrow, or the next day, or maybe next week,
there is certain to be some new discovery or understanding awaiting us. Let’s enjoy ourselves and look
forward to our bright futures here! Thank you very much for listening.
