THE“World Reputation Rankings 2014”について 2014 年 3 月 6 日 JSPS London 3 月 5 日、英国の高等教育専門誌 Times Higher Education（ THE）が、
“ World Reputation Rankings 2014”
を発表した。同社は毎年、米国に本社を置く国際的な情報企業 Thomson Reuters と共同で“THE World University Rankings”を発表しているが、今回のランキングは、その評価基準の一部である「『教育』
と『研究』に関する教員相互の大学評価」にのみ焦点をあてた結果を示している。今回で 4 回目となる同ランキングは、マーケットリサーチ企業である lpsos MediaCT 社が、2013
年 3 月から 5 月にかけて、高等教育機関において平均 18 年の勤務経験を有する教員に対してアン
ケート調査を行い、その結果を取りまとめたものである。回答者は、自身の研究分野における「教
育の質」と「研究の質」という観点から、最も優れていると思われる大学を最大 15 大学まで挙げ
ることができ、各大学の選出数によって順位が決定する仕組となっている。今回は計 133 カ国から 10,536 人の回答があり、その研究分野は、社会科学が 22%、工学・テクノ
ロジーが 22%、物理科学が 18％、臨床分野が 16%、ライフサイエンスが 13%、芸術・人文科学が 9%
であった。また、地域的な偏重をなくすための配慮もなされており、回答者の居住地は、北米が 25%、
西ヨーロッパが 19%、東アジアが 13％、オセアニアが 10％、東ヨーロッパが 10％、中東が 5％、
南米が 4％となっている。ランキングの結果は、上位 10 位中 8 大学、100 位中 46 大学を占めるなど、昨年同様、米国の大
学が圧倒的優位性を示した。英国の大学は、オックスフォード・ケンブリッジの両大学が僅かに順
位を下げたものの、昨年よりも 1 大学多い 10 大学が 100 位内に選出されるなど、米国に次ぐ評価
を維持した。東アジアの大学はソウル国立大学や延世大学が大きく順位を上げるなど、躍進が続い
ている。日本からは上位 100 位中 5 大学が選出され、日本は英米に続いて最も多くの大学が選出さ
れた国（オーストラリアと同数）となった。東京大学は英米以外の大学としては最高位の大学とな
ったが、2011 年に本調査が始まって以来初めて上位 10 位入りが適わず、11 位となった。一方で、
その他 4 大学中 3 大学が順位を上げている。上位 20 位以内に入った大学、及び 100 位以内に入ったアジア地域の大学を下表に示す。なお、
51 位以下は、各大学の評価点の差がごくわずかであったため、10 位ごとのグループに分けて示さ
