Pre-Departure Orientation
This spring, you will study American English and culture based at Portland State University (PSU) for a month.
This program is provided by experienced, friendly program coordinators of International Special Programs (ISP) in the Office of
International Affairs at PSU. Here are a few suggestions from ISP for preparing for your successful, positive experience.
Things You Can Expect
You can expect :

to improve your English speaking skills through communicating with teachers, coordinators, and
your host family, and

to visit Portland’s local cultural, educational sights as a part of your program.
You can also expect:

to be frustrated at times by the challenges of communicating in English, and

to have some difficulties adapting to the American way of life (school life and homestay life).
Packing Suggestions - “Pack as lightly as Possible!”
Clothing:

Bring clothes that are good for rainy and cold days, as well as something you can wear in layers.
Although we can get some nice weather in March, Portland spring can be very rainy and cold.
2. We recommend comfortable shoes because you will walk a lot! It is a great idea to bring a pair of
shoes that are good for rain. You may also want to bring a small umbrella or lightweight jacket.

Some of our spring programs include a ski/snowboarding trip to Mt. Hood. If you would like, bring
your own ski/snowboard clothing, although you are able to borrow from either PSU or your host.
Most people dress very casually in Oregon. Do not wear mini-skirts or short-shorts, or clothing with
offensive words or phrases in English. You may get unwanted attention on your commute to/from
school or walking around town.
Money:

Budget enough for your spending money. Spending money will vary for each student but $300 - $500 is average for the
program . Your daily meals and public transportations to commute to PSU are included in your homestay fees. However,
you will need to buy your own personal items like snacks & souvenirs. If you choose to buy lunches, you are responsible for
paying for them, too. Buying a lunch around PSU costs around $5 - $8. Your ski/snowboard trip cost is included.

If possible, bring a credit card. You can use Visa or MasterCard everywhere in the U.S. We recommend that you don’t bring
Traveler’s check because they are becoming less common in the U.S., and you can only cash them in banks and often not
able to use them in stores.
Program Rules:

All students MUST have their own travel medical insurance; those documents must be carried with them at all times.

If you are taking regular prescribed medicine, you must bring a copy of prescription in English, description of illness in English and enough of dose for entire program.

Students are expected to attend and be on time for all classes and program related activities.

Traveling outside of Portland that is not part of the program is not allowed. If your host family is planning a trip like this,
you must let your homestay coordinator and the PSU coordinator about the trip.

この春、みなさんはポートランド州立大学(以下PSU)でアメリカ英語・文化の勉強をすることになります！ PSU国際交流課の中のInternational Special
Programs - 国際特別プログラム (以下ISP)と呼ばれる部署の経験豊富で親しみやすいスタッフによって運営されています。
ここではISPスタッフからみなさんへ今回のプログラムでより良い経験ができるよういくつかの提案をさせていただきます。
PSUプログラムの参加に伴い期待ができること
期待できること:

PSUの英語講師、ISPスタッフ一同またホストファミリーとの会話を通して英会話スキルアップ

プログラムの一部として、ポートランド周辺の文化的、教育的によく知られている場所への訪問
上記以外にも覚えていてほしいこと:

英語での会話の難しさを改めて実感し、時にはイライラするということ

アメリカ的な生活習慣または文化になかなか慣れないという難しさを痛感する（特にアメリカ式授業の受け方，
ホストファミリーとの生活、またホストファミリーの生活習慣・価値観に合わせるという面において)
荷造り・持ち物に関する提案 - “できる限り荷物は少なめに!”
お金：

お小遣いの額はもちろん個人個人異なりますが、めやすとして多くの学生が＄３００から＄５００ほど持ってくることが
多いようです。毎日のホームステイ先での食事（お昼は基本的に家からサンドイッチを持ってくることになります）、
またPSUまでのバス・電車運賃はホームステイプログラム費用の中に含まれています。しかし、皆さんはおやつ、
お土産といったような個人的な支払いは各自で払うことになります。もしみなさんがPSU周辺でお昼を買うと決めた
場合は各自で払うことになります。めやすとして、PSU周辺で買うランチの値段は＄５～＄８と考えて良いでしょう。

可能であれば、現金に加えクレジットカードを持ってくると良いでしょう。 VISAかマスターカードであれば、アメリカの
どこでも買い物をすることが可能です。トラベラーズチェックはアメリカでは最近は使われることも少なくなり、大手の
銀行に行く必要があるので、私たちとしてはお勧めはしません。
洋服:

３月に入れば春らしい気候の日もありますが、ポートランドの冬と春の間は雨が多く降ります。防水機能のあるコートや、冬の寒い時期に着られる
洋服を持ってくるのが良いでしょう。折りたたみの傘やレインコートをもってくるのも良いでしょう。

また、プログラム中は雨が降ってもたくさん歩きます。履きなれた、歩きやすい靴を持ってくることもとても重要です。

春のプログラムの中にはスキー・スノーボード日帰りツアーが組まれたものもあります。その場合、ISPでスキー・スノーボードで着るジャケットと
ズボンを用意しますが、好みで日本から自分のものを持って着たい人は持ってきてもかまいません。
適切な服装についての注意事項：オレゴン州の人たちはカジュアルな服装を好みます。ミニスカートなど肌の露出の多い服を着ないで下さい。
また、女子・男子に限らず、洋服に英語が書かれているものは、それがどんな意味かを確認してからもってくるようにして下さい。プログラム中はPSU
までの公共交通機関を使って通学をし、時には会社や学校訪問もします。みなさんが周囲または訪問先の人達にどう見られているのかを安全面の
ことも含めて考えるようにしましょう。
プログラム規則:

参加者すべての学生は海外旅行・医療保険に入らなければならない。プログラム中この保険証を必ず持ち歩くこと。

もし日常的に処方箋の必要な薬を飲んでいるのであれば、必ず、あなたの病院から英語の診断書と処方箋をもらい、ポートランドへ持ってくること。
また、プログラム参加中に必要な分の薬を持ってくること。アメリカでは手に入らない薬もあります。

プログラムに参加する学生はすべての授業また午後の活動に時間厳守で出席・参加すること。

個人でのポートランド市外への旅行は禁止されています。もしあなたのホストファミリーがポートランド市外への旅行を計画しているのであれば、
必ずその旨をPSUの担当者とホームステイプログラム担当者に伝えること。
