Ms. Sato also goes along. 長谷川 ： しゃぶしゃぶです。どうぞ 召し上がってください。 Shabushabu desu. Doozo meshiagatte kudasai. キム、シュミット： いただきます。 Itadakimasu. 佐藤 ： まず、肉を 食べます。そこに たれが ふたつ ありますね。 Mazu, niku o tabemasu. Soko ni tare ga futatsu arimasu ne. シュミット ： これですか。 Kore desu ka. 佐藤 ： はい、肉や 野菜に つけます。 Hai, niku ya yasai ni tsukemasu. おいしいですよ。 Oishii desu yo. Mr. Hasegawa： This is shabu-shabu. Please help yourself. Ms. Kim & Mr. Schmidt：Thank you. I shall start. ： First of all, eat the meat. There are two sauces, right? Ms. Sato Mr. Schmidt ： These ones? ： Yes, you dip your meat and vegetables in them. Ms. Sato They are delicious. ■いただきます itadakimasu I shall start（set expression used before eating） ■しゃぶしゃぶ shabushabu shabu-shabu（Japanese dish） ■どうぞ doozo please ■召し上がってください meshiagatte kudasai （polite）please help yourself / taste it ■まず mazu first of all ■肉 niku meat ■食べます tabemasu eat ■たれ tare sauce ■ふたつ futatsu two ■あります arimasu is/be ■野菜 yasai vegetable ■つけます tsukemasu dip ■おいしい oishii delicious 48 Lesson 5 Grammar notes 1 N を o V（transitive） a direct object of a transitive verb を o is used to indicate the direct object of a transitive verb. ■ 肉を 食べます。 Niku o tabemasu. I eat meat. ＊を o and お o are pronounced the same. The former is used only in writing the particle. 2 3 N が あります ga arimasu There is… This sentence pattern is used to indicate the existence or presence of things. The thing in such a sentence is treated as the subject and marked with the particle が ga. あ ります arimasu is used when what is present is inanimate or does not move by itself. Things, plants and places belong to this category. ■ コンピュータが あります。 Konpyuuta ga arimasu. There is a computer. ■ 桜が あります。 There are cherry trees. Sakura ga arimasu. Quantifiers（numbers with counter suffixes） They are usually put before the verbs they modify. However, this is not always the case with length of time. → See page 38. ■ たれが ふたつ あります。 Tare ga futatsu arimasu. There are two sauces. Counting： ひとつ hitotsu, ふたつ futatsu,……とお too This is the ordinary system for counting things. Eleven and higher are counted by using the numbers themselves. ■ 桜 sakura cherry tree ■ひとつ hitotsu one ■とお too ten 49 Dialogue 2. What would you like for dessert? ……シャーベットに します。 ……Shaabetto ni shimasu. 5 ……I'll have the sherbet. V masu-form / N に 行きます ni ikimasu I go to… The purpose for 行 き ま す ikimasu is expressed using this pattern. The purpose is marked with the particle に ni. A noun used before に ni is of the kind denoting an action. ■ 天ぷらを 食べに 行きます。 Tenpura o tabe ni ikimasu. I am going to eat tempura. 6 V ましょう mashoo Let's… This expression is used when the speaker is positively inviting the listener to do something with the speaker. It is also used when responding positively to an invitation. ■ この 次は 天ぷらを 食べに 行きましょう。 Kono tsugi wa tenpura o tabe ni ikimashoo.
