桜美林大学日本語プログラムは、以下のような特長をもっています。
The Japanese Language Program at J. F. Oberlin places emphasis on the following:
○ 多様な背景とニーズに応えるカリキュラム
桜美林大学には、世界中のいろいろなところから異なる背景の学生が来ています。これまでに勉強
してきたことも、これから勉強したいことも、人によって違います。そのような多様な背景とニー
ズに応えるため、個別学習のシステムを導入し、多様な選択科目を設けています。言語形式に焦点
をあてた科目だけではなく、日本語を使って日本の社会や文化に対する理解を深めて考察できる力
を養うことを目指した科目も開講されています。
Meeting the Needs of Our Diverse Student Body
J. F. Oberlin University welcomes students with diverse backgrounds from various parts of the world. The
students differ from each other in what they have studied before coming to Japan and what they wish to
study while in Japan. Our program offers a variety of courses to meet these varied needs by offering courses
focusing on language form as well as courses designed to help students understand Japanese culture and
society.
○ 「日本で日本語を学ぶ」ということ
学生は日本語に囲まれた中で、生活や勉強をするチャンスがあり、日本語を使いながら友達を増や
すことができます。教室の内だけでなく、教室の外で日本語を使いながら勉強することによって、
同時に日本語のコミュニティの一員になることができます。桜美林大学の日本語プログラムは、学
生が第二言語環境（日本語と接触し、使用する機会が教室外にも豊富に存在する環境）の中にある
ことを十分に意識した上で設計されています。
Making the Most of the Japanese as a Second Language (JSL) Environment
Living and studying in Japan provides students with an opportunity to interact with others through the use of
the Japanese language. Using the language in and outside of the classroom helps them become active
members of the Japanese-language community. Our program is designed with this in mind, i.e., that the
students are in a "second language environment" in which they are in contact with Japanese people on a daily
basis.
○ 自律的に学習できることを目指したプログラム
学生が自律的に学習を管理できるよう学習の意識化を促し、各自の目標に合わせた努力ができるよ
うになることを目指しています。その実現のために、自律学習を基盤とした科目「チュートリアル」
を開講したり、日本語学習リソースセンターを通した教室外サポートを提供したりしています。
Aiming to Help Students Attain Learner Autonomy
We aim to help students attain personal autonomy in learning by encouraging them to become motivated and
attain self-awareness for the management of their own studies. To realize this end, we offer guided self-study
courses ("Tutorial") while at the same time providing support outside of the classroom through the Center
for Japanese Learning Resources (CJL).

○ 人と人との交流を重視した学習環境づくり
普通、日本語学習は、教科書や辞書などを使って行うものだと考えられていますが、日本語プログ
ラムでは、学習をもっと広く捉え、世の中のさまざまなものから日本語を学べると考えています。
特に大切にしているのは、人と人との交流です。桜美林大学の学生が「クラス・ゲスト」
として参加する授業を多く設け、また、学生ボランティアによるチューター活動や国際交流グルー
プによる交流イベントも支援しています。
Providing Students with Opportunities for Authentic Communication with Japanese People
Many people think of learning Japanese as something they do with textbooks and dictionaries. At J. F.
Oberlin, we define learning more broadly and believe that students can utilize various things around them as
resources to study the Japanese language. Of particular importance is students' contact with Japanese people.
We offer numerous courses in which native-speaking students participate as "class guests." We also
support various activities (e.g., tutoring sessions, international exchange events) organized by student
organizations on campus.
２．桜美林大学日本語プログラムレベル別の目標
Overall Goals for Each Level in the Japanese Language Program
at J. F. Oberlin
桜美林大学日本語プログラムでは、６つのレベル全てのコア科目および選択科目において、以下の目標
を掲げています。

Students will acquire the ability to utilize the Japanese language in order to conduct basic, everyday
activities while living in Japan.
Students will build a foundation in areas such as Japanese phonetics, orthography, grammar,
vocabulary, discourse, and socio-cultural knowledge on Japan in order to continue studying Japanese at
intermediate and higher levels.
Students will enjoy learning a new language and begin to explore the culture behind it through the
study of the language.
Students will be able to monitor their use of Japanese when communicating with others and make
study plans with the help of teachers and people around them. They will be able to make use of various
resources and proceed in their studies according to their goals.

Overall Goals for the Intermediate Level (Levels 3 and 4)
(1) Students will be able to build a human and information network through use of the Japanese
language.
(2) Students will be able to perform various tasks on their own so that they can enhance their quality of life
in Japan.
(3) Students will be able to handle work that requires the use of simple Japanese. With assistance from an
interpreter, they will be able to conduct work and study for which the primary language is Japanese.
(4) Students will build a necessary foundation in Japanese phonetics, orthography, grammar, vocabulary,
discourse, and socio-cultural knowledge in order to continue studying Japanese at more advanced
levels.
(5) Students will become aware of their strengths and weaknesses in Japanese language
communication and be able to make study goals with assistance from their teachers and others. They
will be able to proceed in their studies by utilizing the various study resources around them.
2－3. 上級（レベル５・６）の総合目標
(1) 場面や状況に応じた多様な日本語表現に習熟し、文脈・目的に応じた適切な表現の選択がで

Students will familiarize themselves with a variety of expressions in Japanese and be able to choose
the appropriate usage according to situation, context and purpose.
Students will be able to rapidly process large quantities of information in Japanese.
Students will be able to understand Japanese-language communities socially and culturally, deal with
unexpected situations properly, and expand their human network by utilizing the Japanese language
according to their needs. They will also be able to participate in various activities in their surrounding
Japanese-language communities with confidence.
Students will be able to sort out information and knowledge necessary for Japanese language
communication and become capable of logical, analytical, and critical thinking in
Japanese.
Students will become aware of their strengths and weaknesses in Japanese language communication
and be able to make study goals with assistance from their teachers and others. They will be able to
proceed in their studies by utilizing the various study resources around them.

３．日本語プログラムの基本構造
Framework of the Japanese Language Program
3－1. 日本語プログラムの構造と考え方
桜美林大学の日本語プログラムは初級から上級まで６つのレベルで構成されています。科目には、コア
科目と選択科目があります。
初級の日本語科目では共通の基礎になる内容があると考えられますので、初級ではコア日本語が中心
で選択が少なく、中級、上級と進むにつれて選択科目の割合が増えるような構造になっています。
コア日本語は、
初級（Ⅰ、Ⅱ）が週６回で 6 単位、
中級（Ⅲ、Ⅳ）が週４回で 4 単位、
上級（Ⅴ）が週２回で２単位です。
選択の「日本語演習」は週１回で 1 単位です。１回の授業は 90 分です。
There are six levels (novice to advanced) in the Japanese Language Program at J. F. Oberlin. Both core and
elective courses are offered at elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels.
There is a foundation of the language to be mastered by all students at the elementary level regardless of
their goals and interests; therefore, the number of “core” class hours at the elementary level is larger than
that at higher levels. Furthermore, more elective courses are offered at the intermediate and advanced levels
than at the elementary level.
The following shows the number of core class hours and credit hours for each level:
Elementary (Levels I & II): 6 times a week, 6 credit hours
Intermediate: (Levels III & IV): 4 times a week, 4 credit hours
Advanced - Level V: Twice a week, 2 credit hours
Each elective course meets once a week for 1 credit hour.
Each class session is 90 minutes long.

3－2. 文字・語彙の位置づけ / Kanji and Vocabulary
日本語クラスでは、異なる背景、異なる能力、異なるニーズの学生が同じクラスで勉強することになるの
で、クラスに入るための一定の基準を設けています。留学生の中には日本語の読み書きのニーズが高
い人とそうでない人がいますが、コア科目では、ある程度の漢字や漢字語彙を扱うことにしています。特

に、中級（レベル３）と上級（レベル５）に上がるときに漢字数・語彙数の目安を設けています。他のレベル
の基準は、その中間ぐらい（例えばレベル２はレベル３とレベル１の間ぐらい）と考えています。
Our students have diverse backgrounds, proficiency levels, and needs. In order to place these students into
the best possible classes we have set certain criteria. While the degree to which students need reading and
writing skills varies, all core courses require a certain command of Kanji and Kanji-based vocabulary. In
particular, we use the following standards for Kanji and vocabulary for those who wish to move from the
elementary level up to the intermediate level (Level 3) and from the intermediate to the advanced level
(Level 5). [Note: Standards for other levels are located between the two adjacent levels. For example, Level
2 is considered between Levels 1 and 3.]

桜美林大学の日本語プログラムでは、漢字が読めれば日本語がさらによく読めるようになり、日本での
生活が豊かになると考えています。話すよりも書くほうが豊かに表現できるという人もいます。逆に、日本
語の会話だけできればよくて漢字は必要ないという人もいるでしょう。しかし、２学期間以上滞在する学生

で次の学期に上のレベルに上がりたいと希望する学生は上に書いた目安を意識して学習目標を明確に

We believe that the ability to read Japanese well, which is realized and enhanced by the knowledge of Kanji,
will enrich the student’s life in Japan. Some students can better express themselves through writing than
speaking, while others feel that they only need to be able to speak and that they do not need to study Kanji.
However, those who plan to stay in Japan for two semesters or longer and study at a higher level are
advised to set clear goals with the above standards in mind and study accordingly.
漢字と語彙の学習目標を具体的に考えて見ましょう。例えば、初級（レベル１～２）の半年間、15 週間で
漢字を 150 字、語彙 750 語を習得目標と考えた場合、「漢字は一週間に 10 字」、「単語は一週間に 50
語」を勉強すると一学期間でほぼ目標に到達することができます。中級（レベル３～４）の半年間では「漢
字は一週間に 23 字」、「単語は一週間に 150 語」を習得すれば次のレベルに進んでいくことができます。
目標達成のためには、コア科目だけではなく選択科目も履修して、さらにクラス以外でも自分で勉強をす
る必要があります。
For example, if you set the goal of mastering 150 Kanji characters and 750 words at the elementary level in
one semester (15 weeks), you can achieve this goal by studying 10 Kanji characters and 50 words per week.
At the intermediate level, if you master 23 Kanji characters and 150 words per week in a semester, you can
go on to the next level. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to take not only a core course but also elective
courses, and furthermore, study on your own outside the classroom.

漢字や語彙を自習するには、授業外の時間に日本語学習リソースセンター（ＣＪＬ）を利用して学習する
のもよい方法です。ＣＪＬには『ストーリーで覚える漢字 300』『Basic Kanji Book』や『Intermediate
Kanji Book』のほか、たくさんの学習リソースがあります。
One good way to study Kanji and vocabulary is to make use of the Center for Japanese Learning
Resources (CJL) outside your class hours. CJL has many materials including Learning 300 Kanji Through
Stories, Basic Kanji Book and Intermediate Kanji Book.
特に次の学期に上のレベルに上がりたい人は、この目標を意識して勉強を進めてください。
Those who wish to go on to a higher level after the current semester are advised to keep these things in
mind.

／ Japanese I (Spring & Fall; 6 credits)
短期留学生を対象とした、日本語入門コース。基礎的な文法項目を用いた口頭練習を主に行う。学期終
了時には、さまざまな挨拶、自己紹介、買い物場面などにおける簡単な会話ができるようになることを目
指す。ひらがな・カタカナをマスターした上で基本的な漢字の読み書きを学び、短文を書く練習も行う。
This course is an introduction to modern colloquial Japanese through aural-oral drills and exercises using
basic grammatical structures. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to handle basic
Japanese conversation used in greetings, self-introductions, shopping, etc. Students will also acquire basic
reading and writing skills through mastery of hiragana, katakana, and very basic kanji so that they can
write short sentences.
● 「日本語 II」春・秋
６単位／ Japanese II (Spring & Fall; 6 credits)
短期留学の、初級後半レベル（教室で150時間程度日本語を学習し、初級前半を終えたレベル）の
学生を対象とする。まず初級前半の日本語を復習した後、初級後半で扱う文法項目の学習を主に
口頭練習を通して行う。このレベルの終了時には、日常会話で意志の疎通ができ、漢字約300字と
基本語彙1500語程度を用いた作文が書けるようになることを目指す。
This course, which is equivalent to high-elementary Japanese, is designed for those who have already
completed approximately 150 hours of classroom instruction. Students will first review low-elementary
Japanese and then go on to study high-elementary grammatical items through aural-oral drills and exercises.
Students are expected to be able to handle daily conversation and write short essays with approximately 300
kanji and 1,500 basic words by the end of the course.

短期留学の、中級前半レベル（教室で300時間程度日本語を学習し、初級を終えたレベル）の学生
を対象とする。それまでに身につけた四技能をさらに伸ばすことを目標とする。特に、場面に応
じて適切に話すことができるようになることを目指し、くだけたスタイルからフォーマルなもの
まで、さまざまなレベルの口頭表現能力を伸ばすための運用練習を行い、短いスピーチ、発表、
討論への参加の仕方も学ぶ。また、基本的な漢字の用いられている文章を読んだり、テーマを決
めて短い文章を書く練習も行う。
This course, which is equivalent to low-intermediate Japanese, is designed for those who have already
completed elementary Japanese (approximately 300 classroom hours). It aims at the further development of
the four basic language skills. The strongest emphasis will be placed on speaking properly in specific given
situations. Students will practice different levels of speech (i.e., formal and informal styles) and learn how
to give a short speech or report, take part in or preside over discussions, etc. Students will also practice
reading materials with basic kanji and writing short essays on specific topics.
● 「日本語Ⅳ」春・秋４単位／ Japanese IV (Spring & Fall; 4 credits)
短期留学生の中級後半レベルの学生を対象とする。日本語による講義や討論に参加し、勉学を進
め、
（日本人学生その他、周囲の日本語話者と）交友を深めるための知識と技能の基礎を習得する
ことが目標である。知識の面では、日常生活や勉学における中核的な語彙・表現や文法事項を、
新聞記事・ニュースなどの身近な言語素材を通じて学ぶ。技能の面では、各種の課題を通し、短
い文章を速く正確に読むこと、テレビ番組や短い会話の聞き取り、電話や短い発表などの口頭表

This course is equivalent to high-intermediate Japanese. Its goal is to provide students with the basic
knowledge and skills necessary for taking content courses in Japanese and participating in discussions, and
for developing and deepening friendships with people around them in Japanese. In the area of knowledge
building, students will learn core vocabulary, expressions, and grammatical items through the use of
everyday language materials such as newspaper articles and newscasts. In the area of skills development,
students will be given tasks designed to help them; comprehend short passages quickly and accurately,
follow short conversations and television broadcasts, express themselves in face-to-face and telephone
conversations, give short presentations, and write letters and short reports.
● 「日本語Ⅴ」春・秋２単位／ Japanese V (Spring & Fall; 2 credits)
上級入門レベルの学生を対象とする。日本語による講義や討論に参加し、勉学を進め、日本人学
生その他、周囲の日本語話者と交友を深める力をつけるため、知識と技能の向上を目指すと同時
に、担当教員やクラスメートとの相談や討論を通して学習を自己管理する能力の向上を目指す。
知識の面では、専門分野の入門書や新聞などの語彙・表現・文法を学ぶ。技能の面では、速く多
くの日本語を処理し、自らのことばで他者に向けて語ることなどを習得することを目指す。教室
内外での学びを総合的に振り返り、自分自身で学習を進めていく力をつけることを目指す。
This course serves as an introduction to advanced Japanese. Its goal is twofold: (1) to provide students with
additional knowledge and skills necessary for attending lectures and participating in discussions, and for
developing and deepening friendships with people around them in Japanese; and (2) to improve each
student's ability to manage his/her own learning experiences through consultation and discussions with the
instructor and classmates. In the area of knowledge building, students will learn vocabulary, expressions,
and grammatical items used in materials such as introductory books in various fields of study and
newspapers. In the area of skills development, students will practice rapidly processing large quantities of
information in Japanese, and expressing themselves to others in their own words. Students will also reflect
on what they have learned in and outside the classroom with the goal of becoming autonomous learners
who can manage the process of learning on their own.

●「日本語演習（チュートリアル）
」春・秋１単位
個別に設定した学習目標と学習計画に従って、教員の支援、アドバイスを受けながら学習を進め
る。内容は、弱点強化や特に興味のある日本語の学習分野など、個人によって異なる。学習は基
本的に個別の進度で行うが、希望によってはグループ単位での活動もありうる。この授業では各
自が、自分にとってどんな日本語が必要か、それを獲得するにはどうしたらいいのかを考え、実
際に自分の計画に従って学習を進め、成果を評価する。この活動を通して、自己の学習スタイル
に気づき、今後の学習に役立つ自律的な学習姿勢を養うことも目的である。
Japanese (Tutorial) (Spring, Fall; 1 credit)
Students will be encouraged to proceed in their studies according to academic goals and study plans set
individually with support and advice from the instructor. The content of this course will differ by
individual, focusing, for example, on overcoming weak points or pursuing language-related topics of
special interest. In principle, students will learn at their own individual pace; however, group activities may
also be organized according to student needs. In this course, students will be encouraged to (1) think about
their Japanese-language needs and how those needs are best met; (2) proceed in their studies according to
their goals; and (3) evaluate the outcome(s). Through these activities, the course aims to help students to
discover their own learning style and cultivate an independent learning attitude for future studies.
●「日本語演習 (漢字Ⅰ, Ⅱ)
春・秋１単位
非漢字圏の学生を対象として、レベル２またはレベル３～４の学生を対象とするクラスに分かれ
ている。暗記を目的とするのではなく、漢字の分解やグループ分けをしたり、漢字の構成要素に
ついて学んだりしながら、漢字に対するアプローチを広げる。
Japanese (Kanji I, II) (Spring, Fall; 1 credit)
These courses are designed for students with a non-Chinese language background. They are offered at two
levels: for those who are at level 2 or the equivalent in the core Japanese program (Kanji I); and for those
who are at levels 3 to 4 or the equivalent (Kanji II). Emphasis will be placed on providing students with
alternative approaches to kanji through various tasks such as dividing one kanji into its components (e.g.,
radicals), grouping kanji, and studying the morphology of kanji, rather than rote memorization.
●「日本語演習（初中級・発音トレーニング）
」春・秋１単位
非日本語母語の初中級（日本語プログラムのレベル２ｂ～３a）の学生のための、日本語発音訓練
のクラスである。日本語の母音、子音、リズム、イントネーション、アクセントなどを、身体を
使って学ぶと同時に口頭能力全般も伸ばす。テキストの内容以外に詩なども扱い、また、歌、俳
句作りなどの活動も行う。声を出しやすくするために、授業のはじめに軽い運動をする。
Elementary/Intermediate Japanese (Pronunciation Skills ) (Spring, Fall; 1 credit)
This course is intended for students who are at levels II (b) and III (a) in the core Japanese program. The
course will introduce students to the basics of Japanese pronunciation. They will learn about various
features of the Japanese sound system such as vowels, consonants, rhythm, intonation, and accent through
various activities such as voice performance and training, singing, and writing Haiku poems. Each class
meeting will start with light warm-up stretches designed to help prepare students for vocal activities. The
course also aims to improve students' general speaking skills.

●「日本語演習（口頭表現Ⅰ～Ⅲ）
」春・秋１単位
レベル３～６相当の学生を主な対象とし、口頭表現能力のレベル別クラスを設定する。具体的な
場面やテーマを通して、日常生活や大学での学習に必要な基本的な表現と語句・文法などの知識、
聞き返し・確認・表情・身振り等を含めた効果的なコミュニケーションスキル、状況や相手に応
じた表現、高度な交渉、社会的な話題や感情の表現、文化の違いに根ざした表現などの、レベル
に応じた口頭表現の技術を学び、能力の向上を目指す。日本語話者の学生にボランティアとして
クラスに参加してもらうこともある。

Japanese (Speaking I, II, III) (Spring, Fall; 1 credit)
These courses are designed for students who are at levels 3 to 6 or the equivalent in the core Japanese
program. The students will be placed in appropriate levels. The courses aim at developing various aspects
of students' proficiency according to their needs and levels. These aspects include knowledge of basic
vocabulary, expressions, and grammar, oral skills such as asking for clarification or confirmation, and the
use of facial expressions and gestures for effective communication. Advanced students will work on their
oral communication skills to adjust their speech according to situation and addressee; cope with challenging
situations involving negotiation; discuss complicated social issues or feelings; and appropriately use
expressions rooted in cultural differences. Native speakers of Japanese may participate in class as
volunteers.
* One’s oral proficiency level may be different from that for the core class. Therefore, those who wish to
register for this course must do so according to the placement for "Speaking" classes (i.e., I, II, or III).
Generally, "Speaking I" entails the overall proficiency of "3b" or higher.
● 「日本語演習（文章表現Ⅰ～Ⅲ）
」春・秋１単位
レベル３～６相当の学生を対象とし、文章表現能力のレベル別クラスを設定する。メモやEメール
などを書くこと、適切な表現と文法を使って自分の意見を書くことから、日本語母語の学生とと
もに講義やゼミに参加して、発表、レポートなども日本人学生と一緒に進めることができるよう
になることまでを目標として、論理的な文章の表現に関する知識と技術を学ぶ。

These courses are designed for students who are at levels 3 to 6 or the equivalent in the core Japanese
program. The students will be placed in appropriate levels. The courses aim to provide students with the
knowledge and skills necessary for; writing simple notes and email, stating their opinions using appropriate
expressions and grammar, and eventually fully participating in academic activities (e.g., giving
presentations in seminars and writing papers) with Japanese students. Students will acquire the vocabulary
and expressions necessary to structure their compositions logically.
* One’s level of writing skills may be different from that for the core class. Therefore, those who wish to
register for this course must first take a separate placement for courses in writing. (Detailed information
is provided at the JLP Orientation and on the online course syllabus.) Generally, "Writing I" entails the
overall proficiency of "3b" or higher.

レベル３～６相当の学生を主な対象とし、読解力のレベル別クラスを設定する。早くたくさんの

わるさまざまな素材を取り上げ、読む力を向上させることを目指す。３～５レベルでは特に速読

Students will read various materials on society and culture to improve their reading skills. "Reading I" will
focus on speed reading large quantities of material, whereas "Reading II" and "Reading III" have the
additional goal of achieving deeper understanding of the material. Those who plan to continue to study
Japanese at a higher level in the following semester are strongly advised to take one of these courses.

observing a traditional Japanese event such as a local festival, making an appointment by phone, and paying
a home visit. Normally, each activity will be conducted in the week following preparation in class or at
home. No textbook will be used, and transportation expenses, admission fees, and other actual costs will be
borne by the students themselves.
● 「日本語演習（中級･初中級文法）」春・秋、１単位
非日本語母語のレベル３～４相当の学生を対象とする。日本語の基本的構造に深く関わる文法項

Intermediate Japanese (Elementary & Intermediate Grammar) (Spring, Fall; 1 credit)
This course is intended for intermediate students who are at levels 3 to 4 or the equivalent in the core
Japanese program. The goal of the course is to help students make appropriate use in various situations of
the basic grammatical items learned at the high-elementary level (e.g., passive and causative verb forms and
constructions, particles, expressions relating to time, demonstratives, honorific language) and gain
competence in varying their language according to situation while learning differences between similar
grammatical items and expressions. The course will focus not only on daily colloquial communication but
also on the written medium of communication. It aims to help students acquire the grammatical foundation
necessary for the high-intermediate and advanced levels while also working to enlarge their vocabulary.

This course is for intermediate students who are at levels 3 to 4 or the equivalent in the core Japanese
program. The course centers around activities outside the classroom. Its goals are; to expose students to
various social problems that Japanese society has, allow them to re-examine social problems that their home
country has, draw their attention to the issues that the whole world has to work together to solve and help
them gain confidence in using the Japanese language to express their ideas. Activities may include
participating in volunteer activities such as a soup kitchen or visiting NGOs which operate support activities.
Normally, each activity will be conducted in the week following the discussion about the topic in class. No
textbook will be used, and transportation expenses, admission fees, and other actual costs will be borne by
the students themselves. Some activities may be scheduled at night or on weekend.

レベル３～４相当の学生を対象とする。J-popなどの音楽、映画、ドラマ、アニメ、ファッション
などの若者文化を通じて現代の日本をめぐるさまざまな大衆文化を理解する。また、こうした大
衆文化を通じて日本語教科書では学ぶことの難しい最新の語句や表現を学び、日本の現代大衆文
化への理解と興味を深めることを目指す。授業では等身大の日本人クラスゲストもリソースとし
て活用し、一緒に話し合ったり、お互いがリソースとなって情報を交換したりしながら、インター
アクションの中で生の大衆文化を考えるようにする。
Intermediate Japanese (Modern Pop Culture) (Spring, Fall; 1 credit)
This course is for intermediate students who are at levels 3 to 4 or the equivalent in the core Japanese
program. Students will learn about contemporary Japanese popular culture through "J-pop" music, movies,
dramas, animated films, fashion, and other forms of "youth culture" (wakamono-bunka). The course aims to
help students learn new phrases and expressions that would normally not appear in language textbooks and
to deepen their understanding of contemporary popular culture. In the class, native Japanese-speaking
guests will be available as a "learning resource." Students are encouraged to talk and exchange information
with the guests in order to learn about contemporary popular culture through authentic interactions with
Japanese people.

This course is based on activities outside the classroom. Its goals are; to expose students to diverse forms of
expression, provide them with opportunities to experience authentic Japanese society and culture, help them
gain confidence, and have them think about methods of language study outside the classroom. Activities,
which are arranged by the instructor according to student interests, may include observing a trial at a local
court, visiting and collecting information at a travel agency, observing a traditional Japanese event such as a
local festival, making an appointment by phone, and paying a home visit. Each activity will be conducted in
the week following preparation in class or at home. No textbook will be used, and transportation expenses,
admission fees, and other actual costs will be borne by the students themselves.
● 「日本語演習（上級・上級文法）
」春・秋、１単位
レベル５～６相当の学生を対象とする。中級を終え、通常のコミュニケーションに不自由はない
が、より高いレベルの表現に必要な文法力をつけたい学生のための科目である。具体的には、一
般の辞典では調べにくい複合的な文末表現・接続表現・副詞や、複雑な修飾関係を含む複文的構
造などである。文法を知識として覚えるだけでなく、会話や文章を通じて、仮説を立てて質問を
考え、参考書や周囲の人の助けを借りながら文法を習得する方法を学ぶことを目指す。
Advanced Japanese (Advanced Grammar) (Spring, Fall; 1 credit)
This course is for advanced students who are at levels 5 to 6 or the equivalent in the core Japanese program
who have completed their study of intermediate Japanese and are thus proficient in daily communication,
but wish to master the grammar necessary to make use of more elaborate expressions. Specifically, the
course focuses on items such as compound elements at the end of a sentence, conjunctive expressions,
adverbs, and other expressions not easily looked up in dictionaries, together with complex sentences that
contain complicated relationships of modification. Students are expected not only to expand their
grammatical knowledge, but also to acquire the means of studying grammar through short conversations
and compositions, e.g., by formulating questions on the basis of a hypothesis, obtaining help from reference
books, exercise books, and people around them.

Advanced Japanese (Occupational Communication) (Spring, Fall; 1 credit)
This course is for advanced students who are at levels 5 to 6 or the equivalent in the core Japanese program.
It aims to help students acquire the knowledge and skills needed to communicate better in Japanese in
office situations or part-time jobs. The course focuses on how to contact people, report information, hold
conferences, make presentations, wait on or speak with customers, and negotiate, whether over the phone,
in person, or by writing. One other important goal of the course is to have students think about customs and
the nature of human relationships and communication through examples of problems, complaints, and
successes in the workplace (and particularly in the multicultural workplace).

レベル５～６相当の学生を対象とする。J-popなどの音楽、映画、ドラマ、アニメ、スポーツ、ファッ
ションなどの若者文化を通じて現代の日本をめぐるさまざまな大衆文化を理解する。また、こう
した大衆文化を通じて他の日本語の教室では学ぶことの難しい最新の日本語の語句や表現を学
び、日本の現代大衆文化への理解を深めることを目指す。
Advanced Japanese (Modern Pop Culture) (Spring, Fall; 1 credit)
This course is for advanced students who are at levels 5 to 6 or the equivalent in the core Japanese program.
Students will learn about contemporary Japanese popular culture through "J-pop" music, movies, dramas,
animated films, sports, fashion, and other forms of "youth culture" (wakamono-bunka). The course aims to
help students learn new phrases and expressions that would normally not be taught in a formal classroom
situation, and to deepen their understanding of contemporary popular culture.
●「日本語演習（上級・聴解とノートのとり方）」春、１単位 ※秋学期は開講しません。
レベル５～６相当の学生を対象とする。日本語母語の学生とともに大学の講義を聞く上で必要な
スキルを養成することを目指す。ノートをとることや、自分が作ったノートや配布資料に書きこ
んだメモを見ながら短くまとめることなどを、実際の大学における講義を聞きながら練習する。
また、それを通して、自身の日本語力を客観的に見つめ、能力全体を引き上げていく。
Advanced Japanese (Listening/Note-taking) (Spring, Fall; 1 credit)

This course is for advanced students who are at levels 5 to 6 or the equivalent in the core Japanese program.
The goal is to foster the skills necessary in order to understand university lectures for native speakers of
Japanese. Note taking, watching videos of real university lectures and learning to summarize briefly class
content based on one's own notes and classroom materials, all prepare students to understand university
lectures on their own. In the process students learn to evaluate their Japanese language skills objectively,
allowing them to elevate their overall language ability.

Advanced Japanese (Terms in Geography and History) (Spring & Fall; 1 credit)
This course is designed for advanced students who are at levels 5 to 6 or the equivalent in the core Japanese
program. Through various exercises and assignments, students will learn the vocabulary and expressions
used in geography and history as they are taught in Japanese elementary and junior high schools. The
course aims to help students (1) comprehend university lectures in Japanese, newspaper articles, and TV
news, and (2) comprehend and master the vocabulary and background knowledge necessary for daily
communication.

Advanced Japanese (Expressions in Japanese & Chinese) (Spring; 1 credit)
*Not offered in the Fall.
This course is designed for advanced students who are at levels 5 to 6 or the equivalent of the core Japanese
program. Native Japanese speakers with advanced Chinese language skills are also welcome to take the
course. Students will practice translating Chinese newspaper articles, literary works, business documents
(e.g., letters and company literature), and technical/medical documents (e.g., specifications and manuals)
into Japanese. Students are expected to produce natural translations based on mastery of sentence structures
and vocabulary. Translating involves many difficulties stemming from the differences between the two
languages in the areas of grammar, vocabulary, and culture. Students will perform the translation tasks as
homework and then present them to the class for discussion. The instructor will provide explanations and
feedback as needed, but for the course to meet its goals students must complete the tasks assigned before
each lesson.
● 「日本語演習（上級・ニュースと新聞）」秋、１単位
※春学期は開講しません。
レベル５～６相当の学生を対象とする。新聞やニュースの内容の理解とディスカッションを通じ
て現代の日本をめぐるさまざまな状況を理解する。また、報道表現の構成・定型表現や語句を習

Advanced Japanese (Newscasts and Newspaper Articles) (Fall; 1 credit)

This course is for advanced students who are at levels 5 to 6 or the equivalent in the core Japanese program.
Students will learn about various issues related to contemporary Japan through newscasts, newspapers, and
class discussions. They will also acquire knowledge of journalistic expressions and narrative styles
commonly used by the news media. Students will deepen their understanding of issues and acquire relevant
vocabulary through the complementary use of news broadcasts and newspaper articles.

レベル５～６相当の学生を対象とする。コリア語と日本語との音声、語彙、表現、文法、談話な
どにおける相違点に注目し、その違いについて対照言語学の側面から体系的に学習する。コリア
語母語話者の誤用分析等をもとに、特に注意が必要と思われる項目を取り出し、毎回のテーマと
する。また、言語における問題のみならず、両国の文化、考え方の違いについても分け入りなが
ら、それぞれの社会への関心と理解を深めることも目標とする。
Advanced Japanese (Expressions in Japanese & Korean) (Fall; 1 credit)
*Not offered in the Spring.
This course is for advanced students who are at levels 5 to 6 or the equivalent in the core Japanese program.
We will focus on the differences in pronunciation, vocabulary, expressions, grammar and conversation
between Korean and Japanese, studying them systematically from the viewpoint of contrastive linguistics.
Each class will focus on a theme requiring particular care, based on error analysis done by native speakers
of Korean. In addition to linguistic issues we will also take notice of differences in the cultures and ways of
thinking of Korea and Japan, with the goal of deepening our mutual understanding of these two societies.
●「日本語演習（上級・大学のレポートの書き方）
」春・秋１単位
留学生以外で日本語を母語としない学生および学群２年生以上の留学生で、
「日本語専門基礎AI」
を履修してレポートの書き方を学習したが、さらに学びたい者の履修を推奨する。

生であるＲＪ／考察日本の学生は、この科目ではなく「日本語演習（文章表現）」を履修するこ

Advanced Japanese: Academic Essay Writing (Spring, Fall ; 1 credit)
This course is intended for advanced students who are at levels 5 to 6 or the equivalent in the core
Japanese program as well as for degree-seeking students in their second year or higher who wish to
further improve their academic writing skills after completing "Japanese Language Foundations AI."
(It is recommended that RJ students register for "Japanese (Writing)," rather than this course, unless
they are specifically interested in improving skills in writing academic essays.) Students will practice
writing in a clear and logical manner at both sentence and paragraph levels in a suitable academic style.
They will then learn step by step how to put their paragraphs in a logical order.

Multilingual Interaction (College of Liberal Arts: Spring; 2 credits)

This course is intended for students of various linguistic and cultural backgrounds (i.e., native and
nonnative speakers of Japanese). There is no requirement regarding proficiency level in the Japanese
language. Through a variety of activities, students will learn roles played by both linguistic and
non-linguistic elements of communication and how to communicate in situations where ordinary interactive
resources are limited or unavailable. Students will teach their native languages to nonnative speaking
participants of the class. They are expected to (1) become conscious of things normally taken for granted in
communication through various activities including discussions about one's own and others' communicative
practices, (2) deepen their understanding of cultural differences and similarities, and (3) explore and
develop competence in intercultural communication.
(IMPORTANT: This is a lottery course: In order to secure the optimal learning environment, it is
necessary to control the number of native and nonnative speaking students registering for this course.

について
Placement Policy
・桜美林の短期（RJ／考察日本）の留学生は、クラス分けテストの結果により、日本語のレベル（Ⅰ～Ⅵ）
が指定されます。
Each of the short-term (RJ/Kosatsu) international students will be placed into one of the six levels (I-VI)
based on the result of the placement test.
・選択の「日本語演習」もレベル「初級」「中級」「上級」など）が指定されています。学生が自分のレベルよ
りも高い（あるいは低い）選択科目を履修したい場合は、まず、担当の先生に相談してください。担当の
先生、さらにコーディネータが許可した場合、その科目を履修することができます。
Each elective course is also intended for students at a specific level (e.g., elementary, intermediate,
advanced). If you wish to take a course of which the level is higher or lower than the level of your core
class, you must first consult the instructor of the course. You can register for the course after you obtain the
instructor's and the program coordinators’ approval.

Students are not allowed to change class levels without permission from the program coordinators. You

Approach to the Study of Japanese
目標を意識すること
まず、今、そして将来、日本語でしたいことを考えましょう。そして、今学期の目標を立てて学習を始めま
しょう。
Set Your Study Goals:
First of all, set your goals and think freely about what you would like to do using Japanese now and in
the future.
留学の環境を活かした日本語学習
留学生活で日本語の力を上げるには、クラスでの学習も重要ですが、同時に、人間関係のネットワーク
を広げ、積極的に友人を作り、テレビを見たり、インターネットで日本語のニュースをチェックしたり、マス
メディアなどのリソースにもアクセスしたりして、創造的にいろいろな方法で学習することも重要です。留
学の環境を使ってできる勉強を工夫しましょう。日本語学習リソースセンター（CJL）を利用したり、日本
語の先生方と相談したりして、いろいろと試してみましょう。
例えば、こんなことをしてみませんか。
・町の中や電車の中でよく見かける看板や広告の文字を読んでみる。
・駅や電車のアナウンスをよく聞く。
・会話のときにわからないことばがでてきたら「もう一度おねがいします」「少しゆっくりおねがいします」と頼ん
だり、「･･･って、どういう意味ですか」「･･･はどう書きますか」などと質問したりする。
Take Advantage of the Study Abroad Environment
It is important to study in the classroom in order to improve your Japanese skills, but at the same time,
it is also important to study in creative ways such as actively making friends by expanding your
"human network," watching TV, listening to the news in Japanese on the internet, and accessing other
resources in mass media. Think about various ways to study and take advantage of your study abroad
environment. Use the Center for Japanese Learning Resources (CJL), consult with your instructors,
and try out many different things.
For instance, you might want to try the following:
・ Try reading billboard signs and advertisements that you often see in town and on the trains.
・ Listen to the announcements on trains and at the station.
･ If you come across words that you do not understand in the middle of a conversation, ask the person
to repeat them again or slow down a little and ask questions such as “What do you mean by …?,”
“How do you write…?,” etc.
自分の目標を達成するために
皆さん一人一人の目的・動機・能力・背景・学習環境などが違うので、プログラムが提供するものには、

通常、日本語の初級を修了するには 300～400 時間の教室での日本語学習が必要だと言われます。中
級を修了するにはさらに 300～400 時間（合計 600～800 時間）の学習が必要だと言われています。桜
美林大学の日本語科目は、１コマ 90 分で、１学期は 15 週ですから、コマ数と１学期間の合計学習時間
の関係は以下のようになります。

Hours of Study Needed for Japanese Language Acquisition
Generally, it is said that one needs 300-400 hours of classroom instruction to complete the beginning
Japanese program. Then, an additional 300-400 hours (600-800 hours in total) are needed for the
completion of the intermediate course. A class session at J. F. Oberlin is 90 minutes long, and a
semester is usually 15 weeks. The following shows the relationship between the number of classes you
take and the total study hours for that semester.

8. 日本語科目における評価
Evaluation Policy for the Japanese Language Courses
・大学の規定により、欠席が３分の１を超えた者は評価の対象になりません。
・遅刻／早退は３回で欠席１回となります。
・他の評価部分については科目によって異なります。各科目のシラバスを確認してくださ
い。
・The university has a policy that those who have missed one third or more of class meetings will
automatically receive an “F” (Fail) as the final grade for that course.
・Three late arrivals for a class will be counted as one absence. This rule also applies to cases in which
one leaves a class early.

ＣＪＬは留学生のみなさんの学習を支援するための場所です。日本語を勉強するための本、辞書、
小説、CD、DVD、新聞、雑誌、テレビ、コンピュータなど、日本語の学習リソース（学習資源）が
あります。日本語のパソコンを使うためのマニュアルもあります。受付には日本人の学生、留学
生の先輩がいますので、何か相談したり聞きたいことがあったら、いつでも話しかけてください。

３．リソースを持ってかえること・本に書き込むことは、絶対にしないでください。

５．会話練習やおしゃべりがしたいときは、CJL 前のフリースペースを使い、室内では静かに
してください。新聞と雑誌はフリースペースで読んでいいです。
６．室内では、飲んだり食べたりできません。飲食はフリースペースを利用してください。
７．プリンターでの印刷は一回につき一人 10 枚までです。不必要にたくさん印刷しないように
しましょう。
８．コンピューターは６台しかないので、お互いに譲り合って使ってください。
注意：パソコンを使用するとき、自分で作成したファイルは電源を切る前に必ず USB メモリや CD-R などに
保存してください。大学のパソコンは、電源を切ると個人が作成したファイルやお気に入りが消えるように
なっています。
*** Eight Important Rules for Using CJL ***
1. Check in your bag / backpack at the counter and take a "riyoo-hyoo" (user
form). Turn in the completed user form when you leave CJL.
2. Materials cannot be checked out. (They are for use in CJL only.) Check with
the university library as they have some of the same materials we have.
3. The resources at CJL belong to everyone. PLEASE DO NOT remove them
from the room or write in anything (e.g., highlight something with a marker,
take notes on pages).
4. To use audio-visual materials (e.g., DVDs, CDs, videos) shelved behind the
Receptionist desk, ask the receptionist.
5. When you practice conversation or talk with friends, please use the “free space” in
front of CJL so that other students can study in a quiet environment in CJL.
6. No drinking or eating in CJL. Please use the “free space” for eating/drinking.
7. When using the printer in CJL, please limit yourself to 10 pages at a time. Please do
not print unnecessary pages.
8. Be considerate of other students as we only have 6 computers.
*Bring your own memory storage devices such as USB flash drive and CD-R to save
files you create on computers in the CJL. Once the computer is shut down, your file will
be erased.

WSC はみなさんのライティングをサポートするところです。

プレゼンテーション原稿、
学外でのコミュニケーションに関するものなど、様々なものについて、1 対 1 でアドバイスを受
けることができます。翻訳や単なるチェックをしてもらうところではなく、自分で書いたもの（未
完成でも可）についてチューターと話し合い、書くスキルを身につけます。書き始める前の、ブ
レーンストーミングの段階で来ても構いません。また受付スペースにはライティングに関するい
ろいろな参考書があります。
利用希望者は 1 回 30 分のセッションを予約してください。オンラインでも CJL でも予約をするこ
とができます。

At the Writing Support Center (WSC), we offer support to students who wish to improve their non-native
language skills in Japanese (or English). We offer one-on-one advice about various kinds of writing
assignments such as reports, essays, presentation handouts, etc. We also give advice about writing that
students might do outside of the classroom. WSC does not offer a proofreading service, nor will the WSC
complete the assignment on behalf of the student. The writer must meet and talk with the tutor about the
assignment (incomplete assignments are acceptable and encouraged) in order to acquire better writing skills.
Additionally, writers can come to the center before beginning the assignment to brainstorm with the tutor.
Various books on writing are available in the waiting space at WSC for your reference.
