the sparky Broadway musical
comedy First Date is an hilarious
exploration of the vulnerability and
awkwardness that a first date can
entail. Aimed at adult audiences,
this light hearted romp is perfect
fare for the romantics out there.
A classic tale of boy meets
girl/opposites attract with a blind
date twist, the audience first
meets Aaron, the geeky guy with
a good job and Jewish family,
who arrives early at the appointed
restaurant. Fashionably late,

date commences. With a chorus
of their inner critics, family and
friends augmenting those first
date nerves and an upbeat song

Kodo "Mystery"
Exploring the limitless
possibilities of the traditional
Japanese drum, the taiko, Kodo
is forging new directions for a
vibrant living art-form. Since
the group’s debut at the Berlin
Festival in 1981, Kodo has given
over 3700 performances on all
five continents, spending about
a third of the year overseas, a
third touring in Japan and a third
rehearsing and preparing new
material on Sado Island.
This tour "Mystery" takes you on
a voyage to the extraordinary, to
a mysterious realm that lies in the
beyond.

The Rising Generation from
Traditional Japanese Kilns
"Japanese Pottery - The Rising
G e n e r a t i o n f r o m Tr a d i t i o n a l
Japanese Kilns" introduces the
works of a total of 35 artists active
in seven major traditional kiln sites
in Japan. They differ in orientation,
including some who carry on long
traditions of pottery production
while pursuing ever-richer
standards in their craft and others
who seek to create individualistic
works exploring new forms. All
are promising artists who will be
leaders of the next generation in the
ceramic arts in Japan. The theme
of the exhibition this time focuses
on "vessels," endeavoring to show
how ceramic artists understand the
function of vessels, the better to
understand the present situation,
and the future, of
Japanese pottery.

New Galleries for Islamic Art
Richard Hunt (American, b. 1935),
a longtime resident of Chicago and
one of the city’s most accomplished
artists, has contributed significantly
to the history of abstract sculpture.
Hunt turns eighty in 2015, and the
MCA celebrates his life and artistic
achievements with an MCA DNA
exhibition of his sculptures and
drawings, dating from the 1950s
through the 1990s.

Masterworks of
Japanese Prints: Toshusai Sharaku
Toshusai Sharaku was a mysterious
Japanese print artist of the late
18th century. He produced about
150 designs in a startling display
of innovation and imagination in
the 10-month period between the
summer of 1794 and the early
spring of 1795. Before and after
this period, an artist by this name is
unknown and therefore, Sharaku’s
true identity has been a matter of
much debate.
Sharaku’s earliest work consisted
of 28 bust portraits of actors who
appeared in the Kabuki plays
presented at the three principal
Edo (Tokyo) theaters starting in the
fifth month of 1794. Each of these
prints had a dark, shiny background
made with a mineral silicate
called mica. All of Sharaku’s
early designs are bold and
realistic portraits of actors
in identifiable roles. After a
few months, however, and
as the peak of the Kabuki
season approached, Sharaku
abandoned this format and began designing prints
of two full-length figures. In many of these prints,
Sharaku used white mica rather than dark mica. The
technique of using mica became quite popular in the
early 1790s but was later abandoned.

Kizuna 4: Through Our Eyes is a unique
photo collection illustrating the personal
and dynamic spectrum of Japan’s ongoing
recovery following the Great East Japan
E a r t h q u a k e a n d Ts u n a m i o f M a r c h
11, 2011. For three years, the Kizuna
exhibitions have connected Chicago
to Japan, and are a continued sign of
support and remembrance for the people
of the recovering Tohoku region. Now, 絆
Kizuna 4 gives a fresh perspective on the
current state of recovery though the eyes
of an American photographer and curator
(Jamason Chen), a renowned Sendai-based
photographer dedicated to documenting
the recovery process (Kiyotaka Shishido)
and a Chicago-based non-profit. These
three contributors traveled separately to
Tohoku in 2014 and photographed changing
landscapes, individual stories, and vibrant
communities. The selections highlight the
parallax of recovery and capture Tohoku,
now.
「絆 Kizuna 4」は、2011 年 3 月 11 日に起き
た東日本大震災と被災者の声を基にした写真
展。過去 3 回に及び行われてきた Kizuna 写真
展は、シカゴと日本を結ぶ架け橋となり、東
北の人々と彼らを支えるシカゴの人々との繋が
りを記憶させる役割をしている。今年の写真展
では、3 人の写真家による写真が展示される。
2014 年に別々に被災地を訪れた 3 人は、現地
の風景や人々の体験談、復活していく地域を写
真に収めている。

the Fourth Anniversary of The Great East
Japan Earthquake and it will show the
progress being made in northeastern
Japan. The keynote address will be
given by John Harris, President and
Representative Director, Nippon Beckton
Dickinson Co., Ltd. Presentations will also
be made by Ichiro Soné, Chief Executive
Director of JETRO Chicago and Yasuhiro
Nagamatsu, Executive Director of JETRO

As the world marks the fourth anniversary
of The Great East Japan Earthquake
(March 11, 2014), Chicago-based filmmaker
Wesley Julian will share his documentary
film, Tohoku Tomo (translated: "Friends of
Tohoku") to bring attention to the ongoing
efforts to rebuild the Tohoku region of
Japan, which was directly impacted by the
disaster. The film, Tohoku Tomo, will be
shown during the first hour, and the panel
discussion will be hosted during the second
hour.
