Mission to Mars　〈ニュースレポート〉
ポイント　Pick of the Day
講師：由井ロバート
エリックが宇宙開発に関するニュースについてクラスで報告し
ています。その中で、エリックは terraform という表現を何と言
い換えて説明しているでしょう？ a proposal to terraform the
planet, in other words, ~ と言っていますので、その後に続く部
分を聞き取りましょう。また、専門家は財政的にも技術的にも難

しいと言っていますが、これに対して the space agency（＝宇
宙局）は何と言っているかも聞き取りましょう。Contrary to this, the agency believes it
will be ∼ の続きは何と言っているでしょうか？
エリックは宇宙開発に関するニュースについてクラスで報告しています。
The Space Agency announced a new plan to send astronauts to Mars. The
plan includes a proposal to terraform the planet, in other words, make it
inhabitable for humans. However, some experts have pointed out that the
plan is both financially and technologically difficult. Contrary to this, the
agency believes it will be financially rewarding and is worth trying.
１）however
however は、それまでと逆の話を始めるときの表現です。次の２つの文を見てみましょう。
My sister was angry. 「私の姉は怒っていました。」
She listened to me. 「彼女は私の話を聞いてくれた。」
ふつう、誰かに対して怒っているとき、その人の話を聞こうとする人は少ないかも知
れません。
「しかしそれでも（私の話を聞いてくれた）」のように２つの文をつなぐとき、
however を使います。
My sister was angry; however, she listened to me.
「姉は怒っていましたが、それでも私の話を聞いてくれた。」
２）but
会話などでは、however の代わりにシンプルに but を使うことが多いです。上の例文
で but を使うと、
My sister was angry; but she listened to me. のようになります。

例をもう１つ。
Visiting Mars is challenging. 「火星に行くことは魅力的です。」
The mission is very dangerous. 「その任務はとても危険です。」
この２つの文を、however を使ってつなぐと、
Visiting Mars is challenging; however, the mission is very dangerous.
however の代わりに but を使うと、
Visiting Mars is challenging, but the mission is very dangerous.
「火星に行くことは魅力的ですが、しかしながら、その任務はとても危険です。」
となります。
３）on the contrary (contrary to this　など)
on the contrary や contrary to (this, that) も、however などと同じく、それまで
と逆の話を始めるときの表現です。例えば、こんな風に使います。
My part-time job was boring. 「私のアルバイトはつまらなかった。」
It was well paid. 「それは、賃金は良かった。」
この２つの文を on the contrary を使ってつなげると、
My part-time job was boring; on the contrary, it was well paid.
「アルバイトはつまらなかったが、それに反して賃金は良かった。」となります。ま
た、on the contrary は、but と言い換えることもできます。
My part-time job was boring, but it was well paid.
さらに、on the contrary は、次のような場面にも使えます。
友だち： I suppose your part-time job was not very interesting.
「アルバイトはあまり面白くなかったでしょう。」と友だちに言われたとき、
あなた：On the contrary, it was really enjoyable. I liked it.
「（そう思うかもしれないが、）それに反してとても楽しかった。好きだったよ。」

また、on the contrary の代わりに contrary to that（this）を使うこともできます。
Contrary to that (that ＝ what you just said), it was really enjoyable. I liked it.
以上が、話の流れと逆のことを言うときによく使われる表現です。
４）additionallyなど
次は、情報を加えるときの表現です。additionally は「∼に加えて、そのうえ」など
と言いたいときに使います。
Jane can play the piano. 「ジェーンはピアノが弾けます。」
Jane can play the ﬂute, too. 「ジェーンはフルートも吹けます。」
この２つの文を、additionally を使ってつなげると、
Jane can play the piano. Additionally, she can play the ﬂute.
「ジェーンはピアノが弾けます。そのうえ、フルートも吹けます。」となります。
additionally は、やや硬い表現なので、代わりに使われるのが in addition または in
addition to ∼ です。それぞれ、上記の文では、
Jane can play the piano. In addition, she can play the ﬂute.
Jane can play the piano. In addition to that, she can play the ﬂute.
となります。ちなみに、in addition to that のthatは、「彼女がピアノを弾けること」
を指しています。この他にも、情報を加えるときの表現には、moreover （そのうえ、
さらに）、besides（加えて：さらに重要な内容を加えるとき）などがあります。
５）in other words
物事を言い換える場合、in other words という表現が使われます。「直前に言ったこ
とをより簡単に、シンプルに言うと」というニュアンスの表現です。
We spent all our money today. In other words, we are broke now.
「私たちは今日お金を全部使ってしまった。つまり、今は無一文だ。」
となります。

６）for example と therefore
for example は、「例えば」と例をあげるときの表現です。
I like fruits, for example, apples, bananas, and grapes.
「私はフルーツが好きです。例えばりんごやバナナ、ぶどうなどです。」
for example は文中だけでなく、文頭や文末に置くこともできます。
For example, Mars, Venus, and the Earth are planets.
「例えば、火星や金星や地球は惑星です。」
therefore は、結論を述べるときによく使われる表現です。「したがって／ゆえに／そ
の結果」という意味です。次のように使われます。
Yuji is living alone in Tokyo. Therefore, he has to do all the housework by
himself. 「佑司は東京で一人暮らしです。したがって、彼は自分ですべての家事をしなくて
はなりません。
」
また、therefore は文中に置くこともできますので、
Yuji is living alone in Tokyo. He, therefore, has to do all the housework by
himself. と言うこともできます。
ポイント　今ドキ！英語
今回のレッスンは「火星へのミッション」。それにちなんで、SF（空想科学）の世界に登場す
る科学技術を紹介します。例えば、universal translator は「すべての言語を自動翻訳する装
置」。transporter は人や物などを「転送する機械」です。protective force ﬁeld は、人な
どを守ってくれるいわゆる「バリアー」。直訳すると「防御用エネルギーフィールド」となります。
SF は、英語では science ﬁction（空想科学）と言い、略語である SciFi（サイファイ）が
よく使われます。もし、英語圏で日本語のように SF（エスエフ）と言ってしまうと、アメリ

＊　＊　＊　HOW WE CAN PREPARE FOR DISASTERS AT HOME
Japan is a country of earthquakes; however, we don t know when an
earthquake hits us.
Therefore, we should all be ready to protect ourselves.
We have to make sure that things in the house are kept safe, for
example, by using a stopper, so that they will not fall or move.
It is also a good idea to put anti-scattering ﬁlm on window glasses. In addition, you should check your evacuation area.
In other words, you should check where to go and how meet with your
family.
We should prepare emergency supplies, for example, drinking water,
food, clothes, ﬂash light, rain gear, in a backpack on your bedside.
Last but not least, remember that a stitch in time saves nine.
家庭でできる災害対策
日本は地震大国です。しかしながら、地震がいつ起こるかはわかりません。
ですから、私たちは自分たちを守る備えをしなくてはいけません。
家にあるものを、例えばストッパー（固定具）を使い、動いたり落ちたりしないよう安全にしなくてはいけ
ません。
窓ガラスが飛び散らぬようフィルムを貼るのも良いでしょう。
さらに，避難場所を確認しておきましょう。
すなわち、まずどこに行くか、家族とどう落ち合うかを確認しておきましょう。
非常用品、例えば飲み水、食料、衣類、懐中電灯、雨具などをリュックサックに入れて枕もとに置きましょう。
大事なことをひとつ言い残しましたが（最後に、とても大事なことですが）、
「備えあれば憂い無し」と言
いますので覚えておきましょう。

火星へのミッション
宇宙局は，宇宙飛行士を火星に送る新しい計画を発表しました。その計画には，火星の
地球化，つまり人間が住めるようにする計画も含まれています。しかし，その計画は財政
的にも技術的にも難しいと指摘する専門家もいます。これに対して，宇宙局は，この計画
は財政的にも見返りがあり，試す価値のあるものだと確信しています。
