アーカス（虹）に期待します
米沢市国際交流協会の創立15周年、誠
におめでとうございます。今日までの関係
各位のご努力に深く敬意を表し、厚く感謝
申し上げます。
昨秋、協会は事務所を平和通りに移して
国際交流プラザとし、公募によって愛称が
「アーカス」となりました。ラテン語で「虹」とのことですが、
異国に住む地球人同士の交流のかけ橋である国際交流協会の目的
にぴったりのとてもよい名前だと思います。

また、選考理由として「米沢は虹がよく見られるまち」との意
見が何人かの選考委員から出されたとのこと。生まれた時からこ
のまちに住んでいる人には、なかなか気付かないことだと思いま
す。うれしい指摘です。きっと、何か科学的な根拠があるものと
思います。
事務局スタッフも、市の職員から市民の方々へと変わりまし
た。みんなで力を出し合って国際交流活動を盛り上げ、視野も心
も広い市民で溢れる魅力的なまちへ、また一歩前進してゆきま
しょう。

て祝賀記念会を開催させていただきまし
た。多くの企業や個人の協賛をいただきま
した。また、米沢市の強い支援がありまし
た。何といっても、実行委員会を結成して
ボランティアで働いてくださった方々の協
力が素晴らしかったです。あらためて御礼を申し上げます。
目標をもって、人々が働き始めることこそが前進でありそのも
のが目的です。とはいえ、多くの方が賛同して参加してくださっ

Last fiscal year, YIRA commemorated its 15th Anniversary
with a grand celebration. We received sponsorship from both
local businesses and individual donors. Additionally, the support
extended to us by the City of Yonezawa proved invaluable. Most
of all, the hard work by the volunteers members of the executive
planning committee made the celebration a stunning success.
Once again, I'd like to offer my thanks to everyone involved.
With a goal in mind, people begin striving to reach it – that
hard work is its own reward. Seeing everyone come together was
deeply encouraging. Merits of our work include truly making an
impact across the globe, promoting cultural understanding and

exchange between Yonezawa and the world, as well as fostering
future leaders. If even one extra person joins together with us, it
will make our efforts worthwhile. Additionally, I hope that foreign
residents living in Yonezawa thoroughly enjoy their time spent in

stop by the YIRA Office for a friendly cup of tea.
To properly mark the milestone of YIRA's 15th Anniversary,
Yonezawa City International Exchange Plaza has been named
“Arcus,”Latin for“rainbow.”I hope that everyone comes to love
Arcus as much as YIRA!

○平成23年度総会　Fiscal Year 2011 General Meeting
53名の会員が出席し、全ての議事が原案どおり承認されました。本
年度は当協会設立15周年目にあたり、協会の自立と会員・市民との活
発な交流を展開したいとの目的で市役所から中心市街地へ事務局移転し
ました。懇親会では同年２月に開催された日本語スピーチコンテスト
(IVY主催)で入賞された佐藤順さん(韓国出身）阿部小梅さん(中国出身）
のスピーチと国際交流員のアレックスのミニ講座の発表がありました。

53 members attended this year's meeting. All items on the agenda were
approved in their original form. Marking the 15th anniversary of YIRA and
opening new doors for international exchange in Yonezawa, it was
officially decided to move the YIRA office to its new downtown location.
At the post-meeting party, winners of the IVY Japanese Speech contest
Ms. Jun Sato and Ms. Koume Abe both recited their speeches and CIR
Alex Scharf gave a short presentation on foreign relations in Yonezawa.

松川河川敷
青空の下、61人の参加者が「いも煮」を作り、お互いの鍋
を食べ比べ。日本文化にふれ、交流を深めた１日でした。
Underneath a clear fall sky, 61 participants prepared
Yamagata's famous imoni, comparing differently cooked styles
of the traditional stew.

去年の芋煮会は米沢の厳し
い暑さの中で行われました。
その分、参加者間のお話も賑
やかで、外国、そして日本の
方一同、うまい山形名物であ
る芋煮を楽しく食べました。
ごちそうさまの後で、美味し
い芋煮への投票とリンゴ皮む
き大会が待っていたので、満
腹のままのファイトでした。

Last year's Imonikai was held
in the intense heat of Yonezawa.
But the talk between participants
was just as lively and Japanese
and foreign participants together
enjoyed Yamagata's famous
"Imoni". After eating, voting for
delicious imoni and an apple

stomach.

○生涯学習フェア
「YIRAテント」
Lifelong Learning Fair – YIRA Tent
「世界の遊び！」のテーマでALTとのけん玉、
ジャックス、英語でじゃんけんなどで来場者と触
れ合いました。今年もチョコバナナは大好評！
Keeping with this year's theme of“Games of
the World,”visitors challenged local ALTs to
kendama, jacks, rock-paper-scissors, and other fun
games. Of course, YIRA's famous chocolatedipped bananas were a big hit as well!

今年の生涯学習まつりは新しい会場で行われました。この会場は静か
で参加者がゆっくりできる場所だったため、イベントの雰囲気が平年よ
りも盛り上がっていました。ワイラのテントでは楽しいゲームがたくさ
んあり、おきたま地方から集まったボランティ
アと地元の子どもたちでにぎわっていまし
た。一番うれしく思ったのはやっぱり子ど
もたちの笑顔でした。

This year, the lifelong learning festival was at a
new location. It was a quieter, more relaxed place,
so the atmosphere was even more cheerful than it
has been in the past. YIRA had many exciting games
with volunteers from all over Okitama. We could
have a great time playing with the children of
Yonezawa and seeing their smiling faces was the
best part of the day!

Yonezawa Industry Festival at Machi no Hiroba – Experience Halloween
ハロウィーンの衣装を着た子供達が遊びに来てくれました。か
ぼちゃのくりぬきは目をひきました。

まつりに参加させて頂きました。
参加者と韓国の話題や、国際交流
の話で盛り上がり早速会員に登録
した方もおり、お子さん連れのマ
マ達でワイワイ賑やかな二日でし
た。もっと国際交流の活動を広げ、
米沢市にいる外国の方はもちろ
ん、日本の方も一緒に交わりをし
なければならないと思いました。

genuine Halloween complete with
trick-or-treating and a giant jack-olantern!

Korean dress. It was a lot of fun
sharing about Korea and other topics
relating to international exchange –
some of those I talked to even
became YIRA members on the spot!

creating fellowship between foreign
residents and Japanese citizens is

29名の方が参加し、感謝祭の歴史について学び、ちらし寿司や和菓子、水餃子など持ち寄って開催しました。

Foreign Resident Support Seminar
第一部「ゴミ分別講座」で、参加者が熱心
にメモし、たくさんの質問がでました。第二
部のクラフト講座は「お正月のリース」を作
り、和やかな交流タイムもありました。

中国はゴミ分別を日本みたいに詳し
くないので、ルールがあっても、無い
みたいです。
町中は綺麗ですし、気持ちいいです。
参加して、いままで、分からなかった
事や、要らないものの分別ができるよ
うになりました。リース作りもとても
楽しかったです。黒田三佳先生のおか
げで、日本の文化を知る事ができ、他
の会員さんとの交流も出来て、とても
良かったです。

Trash disposal rules in China are
not as strict as Japan. Japanese
cities are quite clean – it's a rather
good feeling. I learn many new
things about trash disposal and
sorting from this seminar. Making a
holiday wreath was also a lot of
fun. Thanks to Ms. Mika Kuroda's
instruction, I learned more about
Japanese culture. Chatting with my
fellow participants made the whole
experience very enjoyable!

「ベネズエラとニュージーランド」
International Understanding Seminar – Venezuela and New Zealand

講　師：エルネスト・リバス
カレブ・ゴードン　ベネズエラ出身の山大留学生よりクリスマスの紹介をしてい
ただき、ニュージーランド出身のALTが郷土料理シェパード
パイとパプロワをつくってくれました。

Next, ALT Mr. Caleb Gordon shared New Zealand holiday
traditions as well as authentic cuisine from his home country.

YIRA Café – Workshop
「国際交流について」のテーマで、初めてワークショップ形式で行い
ました。グループに分かれてディスカッションや外国文化についての
ゲームをしました。

Featuring a short seminar on the topic of“International Exchange,”
this marked the first special“Workshop”version of YIRA Café.
Afterwards, attendees divided up into groups for engaging discussions
and an activity that furthered understanding of multiculturalism.

ネパールと日本の生活・文化をカルタ風に仕立てたクイズ。
カルタに書いてある質問にアーダ、コーダと、グループ毎にミー
テイングして、答えのカルタを選ぶのはとても面白かった。まさ
か！ネパールの人はその様に考えるんだ。と、生活・文化など考
え方や見方の違いが分かり非常に良かった。今後も是非別の国を
取り上げてやって頂きたい。

We played a quiz game with cards focusing on the differences in
lifestyle and culture between Japan and Nepal. It was interesting
discussing in our own group which cards fit to which coutry. I surprised a
bit with the way of thinking in Nepal. Learning about their lifestyle and
culture was very interesting. I'd like to learn about even more countries in
the future.

○雪灯篭を作ろう！　Make a Snow Lantern With YIRA!
恒例となった雪灯篭づくり。７日の雪
つめ作業は事務局含め13人、10日の成
形作業は35人の参加がありました。
Thirteen people helped pack snow on February 7th, and on
the 10th, 35 YIRA members and ALTs from across Yamagata
came together to carve a beautiful snow lantern for the
Yonezawa Snow Lantern Festival.

雪どうろうまつりに参加したのは今年が２回目にな
りますが、実際に雪どうろうを作るのは初めてでし
た。以前から「雪どうろうはどうやって作られている
んだろう」と気になっていたので、今回はワイラの皆
さんと一緒に雪どうろうを作れて本当にうれしかった
です。作っている間は本当に寒かったが、みんなとに
ぎわいながら、寒さもあっという間に忘れてしまいま
した。出来上がったワイラの雪どうろうがロウソクに
灯されて、静かに雪の中で立っているのを見たらすご
く達成感を感じました。是非、来年もワイラさんの皆
と一緒に雪どうろうを作りたいです！

This was my second year seeing the Snow
Lantern Festival, but my first time actually making
the snow lanterns! I was always very curious
about how the lanterns were made, so I am really
glad that I got to make a lantern with YIRA and
its many wonderful volunteers. It was freezing
cold when we were carving the lantern, but I had
a great time meeting new friends and building
the lantern together with everyone else. During
the festival, I was very excited to see the YIRA
lantern lit up with candles, glowing quietly in the
snow. Thank you YIRA for this wonderful
opportunity. I definitely want to participate in
building the lantern again next year!

YIRA Café and Chinese, Korean, and English Lunchtime Chat
月数回、米沢市国際交流プラザ（アーカス）にて「YIRAカフェ」や、「英語・中国語・韓国語でランチ」を開催しています。YIRAカフェは
その月によってテーマが変わり、世界各国の文化の紹介やワークショップ、親子で参加できる英語で遊ぼうなどの内容があります。また、英語・
中国語・韓国語で会話しながらのランチも開催しています。もちろん、日本語での参加も大歓迎です！
それぞれの開催日は、ホームページでお知らせしています。いつもアットホームな雰囲気の中で開催していますので、国際交流に興味のある

YIRA Café as well as Chinese, Korean, and English Lunchtime Chat are held several times monthly. YIRA Café's theme changes monthly,

平成24年２月12日、YIRA15周年とまちなか移転を記念する「国際交流のつどい」を、東京第一ホテル米沢にて開催しました。20カ国か
ら総勢200名の参加者が集い、様々なステージイベントやスピーチなど盛り上がりました。名誉会員のダニエル・カールさんや前CIRのダニ
エル・スマイリーさんと10周年に活躍したCIRイアン・バークハイマーさんよりお祝いメッセージをいただきました。
また開会式の中では、新しい国際交流プラザの愛称発表と表彰式も行われました。愛称は、広く市民に公募し、ラテン語で「虹」を意味する
「アーカス」に決定。多様な国の人が集い、交流する、国際交流プラザにふさわしい名前の発表に、会場も沸き上がりました。

YIRA設立15周年記念、国際交流の集いにボランティアとし
て参加させていただき、とても嬉しかった。色んな方と出会っ
て楽しい会話も出来て、「人でつながる地球の輪」のことを感
じました。米沢で生活している外国人として、YIRAの様々な
活動を楽しめています。これからもっと多彩な催しを期待して
おります。
Working as a volunteer at the YIRA 15th Annivesary Party
was a wonderful experience. I met many new friends and
truly felt the theme of“linking people with the world.”As a
foreign resident living in Yonezawa, I thoroughly enjoy YIRA
events, and I'm looking forward to even more in the future.

On Februrary 2nd, we commemorated YIRA's 15th anniversary and move to our new downtown office with a grand celebration at the Yonezawa Dai-ichi
Hotel. Over 200 participants from 20 countries enjoyed spectacular stage events, lively musical performances, and speeches from local residents. We
also received congratulatory video messages from honorary YIRA member Daniel Kahl and past CIRs Ian Burkheimer and Daniely Smiley.
At the celebration, we announced Yonezawa International's Exchange Plaza's new nickname. After receiving numerous submissions from the citizens
of Yonezawa, the name "Arcus," Latin for Rainbow, was officially christened in a ceremony. People of many different nationalities came together to
celebrate YIRA's past, present, and future, and the announcement of the new nickname was definitely a special moment for everyone in attendance.

I was fortunate enough to be asked to wear a hakama at
the YIRA 15th Anniversary Party, which turned the event into
a very memorable experience! The party was also a great
opportunity to meet people from around the world and learn
more about their cultures. I look forward to the next event
held by YIRA!

初めて国際交流イベントに参加しました。様々な国の方と会
話をし、楽しい時間を過ごすことができました。私にとっては
ごく普通の生活・文化や風土に興味を持ち、「好き！」と言っ
てくれる方々。参加の動機は、英語に触れたいという単純なも
のだったが、「日本が（山形が）好き！」という方々と話をす
る中、私自身も改めて日本について考え、日本はいい所だ、と
いうことができた時間でした。
This was my first international exchange event. I had a
wonderful time speaking with people from many different
countries. Everyone I spoke with expressed an interest in
aspects of Japanese lifestyle, culture, and scenery that seem
ordinary to me. I joined in the event for the simple reason
that I wanted to practice my English. However, hearing how
much everyone loved Japan and Yamagata gave me an
opportunity to reflect upon the appeal of my own country.

平成23年10月１日　October 1st, 2011
国際交流協会のまちなか移転を記念するオープニングセレモニーと、新しい国際交流プラザ
の開所式を行いました。二中吹奏楽部の皆さんによるファンファーレで看板の除幕を行い、
新しくオープンした国際交流プラザをお披露目しました。たくさんの会員にも参加いただき、
青鷹組の和太鼓の演奏とともに、新たな門出をお祝いすることができました。
オープニングセレモニーの第二部として、国際交流員のアレックスがミニ講演会を開催。
「米
沢の絆が　人を結び　世界を結ぶ」と題して、震災後の復興やまちづくりに向けて、よねざ
わ人がなすべきことを語ってくれました。
On the first of October, YIRA officially opened the doors to its new downtown office. Yonezawa
Second Junior Highschool brass band provided fanfare to the ribbon-cutting ceremony and
Aotaka-gumi's taiko drumming gave an exciting performing to celebrate the new beginning. The
ceremony was attended by many members and community leaders.
After the inaugural ceremony, CIR Alex held a short seminar highlighting
post-disaster recovery and hidden charms of Yonezawa.

Moving to Japan two weeks after the
earthquake on March 11th made me a little
nervous, but it turned out to be the one of the
most interesting adventures of my life. I have experienced things of
which previously I could only dream,
seen things that I had only seen in
photos, and visited places that are
older than I can imagine.
During my first three months in
Yonezawa, life was strange. I had to
get used to driving in Japan, as well
as trying to remember the Japanese I
studied in college, which turned out
to be harder than I thought.
Everywhere I went, I met nice
people. I had the opportunity to meet
city hall workers, amazing citizens
of Yonezawa, and many ALTs. All
of the people that I met and talked
with have made a lasting impression
on my life.
My first hanami was a great
experience. Before coming to Japan, I thought that
the US had a lot of flowering trees, but nothing matches the scale and
wonder of Japanese cherry trees. The sheer amount of cherry trees is
impressive, and the celebrations surrounding them are equally
interesting. This was the first time I really saw how much Japanese

people enjoy celebrating each season.
The Yonezawa Snow Lantern festival was
another wonderful seasonal event. I got to
experience making amazing snow lanterns (as well as the numbing
cold!) Whenever I saw a snow lantern, their individual size alone was
impressive, but seeing them lined up together made the experience
unforgettable.
One event that I could never imagine participating in was the
reenactment of the Battle of Kawanakajima at the Uesugi Matsuri.
Wearing full samurai armor and carrying a flag was sometimes difficult,
but was a very interesting experience. Pictures from that day still bring
back good memories.
Having the opportunity to live in Yonezawa has given me a chance to
study and practice
my Japanese, adjust
to living in a new
country, as well as
many other things.
The friends I have
made and the people
I will meet in the
future continue to
make my time here
more and more
pleasant and
interesting.

面白い発見の一つは蝉の声についてです。ある夏の日、私は指導教

2010年4月6日に日本に来ました。これが初めての海外経験です。

El nuevo mundo japonés（The New Japanese World）
Ernesto Rivas（Venezuela）
Hello, my name is Ernesto
Rivas. Before coming to
Japan, I had lived all my life
in the tropical country of
Venezuela. In fact, I saw
snow for the first time in my
life on April 6th, 2010 – the
day I came to Yonezawa.
For as long as I can
remember, I've been
interested in Japanese kanji.
My favorite character has always been“love.”It was quite a surprise
when I learned that one of the most famous heros of Yonezawa had
the kanji for“love”affixed to the helmet of his battle armor. I knew that
living in Japan would be the most exciting adventure of my life.
I am now a second year master's student studying mechanical
engineering at Yamagata University Faculty of Engineering. Through
my classes and research, I have had the chance to further my
understanding of Japan and Yonezawa, as
well as meet people from all around
the world. Thanks to these
friendships, I have come closer to
understanding the feelings of the
Japanese people.
One of my most interesting lessons
in Japanese culture I learned from my
tutor. During my first summer in
Yonezawa, we were talking about
cicadas. He asked me if I thought
cicadas were loud, to which I
answered,“Of course, their sound is
very noisy.”My tutor then explained
that it wasn't a noise, but the cicada's
voice. I believed that a voice
was something that only humans
possessed, but in Japan, all
animals, even insects, have a
voice. The differences between
Japan and my own culture are
endlessly fascinating.
Soon, almost two years will
have passed since coming to
Yonezawa, and already I have
amassed a lifetime of wonderful memories – wearing samurai armor in
the Uesugi Festival, seeing beautiful fireworks in the summer, viewing
fireflies at Onogawa Onsen, eating Yamagata's famous imoni stew in
autumn, learning how to ski and snowboard, experiencing Yonezawa's
harsh winters, and joining in the Snow Lantern Festival. Yonezawa is
now my home, and has given me a new perspective on Japan and a
path to better understand the cultures of the world. My time here has
been one of the most beautiful and enjoyable times of my life.

私達家族に十年前に遠く海を渡り、中国江西省から迎えたお嫁さん！
ある日、こんなユーモラスな事もありました。
私が出かけた時「冷蔵庫のなか、片付けたよ」と言われ、
「アラ、よく気
がきいて、きれいにしてくれてありがとう」と言ったものの、そばのごみ入
れに大事に保存していた漬物等の食品が捨てられているのを見てがっかり
し、言葉をなくしました。においがきつかったので、悪くなったと思い捨て
たのでした。
あれこれと思い起こすと戸惑うこと
の日々、文化の違い、食生活、生活習
慣の違いと言葉で表すことの出来ない
困難な道でした。彼女も私達以上想像をはるかに越えた苦悩の日々だったこと
でしょう。少しずつお互いの違いを受入れ、理解し、認め合うことが出来るよ
うになりました。
私は家族の健康を考え、出来るだけ畑で有機栽培の野菜を作っています。中
国のご両親の思いを考える時、同じ娘を持つものとして、人の幸せを預かる責任を感じ、身体が続く限り頑張りた
いと思います。
「お母さん、味噌汁の味つけ、これでいい？」と台所から彩佳の明るい声で、一日が始まります。大きな壁を乗
り越えた今、心地良い空間を共有できるようになりました。
聡明で、思慮深い四年生の長女、感性豊かで心優しい一年生の次女、二人の可愛い孫に囲
まれて、幸せをかみしめています。

10 years ago, she came from far across the sea – all
the way from Jiangxi, China.
In our early days together, a rather funny thing happened.
While I was out, she cleaned the inside of the refrigerator.“What a lovely
gesture! Thank you for cleaning it up!”I praised her. Yet upon closer inspection,
I realized that she had thrown out all the pickled vegetables! I couldn't believe it.
The strong smell caused by pickling led her to believe that they were fresh vegetables gone bad.
Thinking back now, I recall episodes like this, filled with initial confusion. Cultural obstacles, different diet and
lifestyle, and the inability to discuss these differences due to language barriers led to some stressful days. And for
her, it must have been even more difficult than we could imagine. However, little by little, bit by bit, we grew to
understand our differences and live together as a family.
Thinking of my family's health, I always try to grow organic vegetables in our gardens.
When I think of her own parents faraway in China, I feel responsibility for their
daughter's, my daughter's, happiness and wellbeing. I'm going to do my best for as long
as I can.
“Mom, is the flavor of this miso soup OK?”The bright voice of my step-daughter's
voice begins the day, and again I'm reminded of the difficulties we overcame to live so
comfortably together. I'm now surrounded by happiness – my two granddaughters, the
eldest intelligent and thoughful, the younger sensitive and kind-hearted.
Cheers to my step-daughter for bringing me true happiness!

2011年10月からカナダのバンクーバーに滞在しています。国際色豊かなこの街で、楽し
く生活しています。
I've lived in Vancouver since October of 2011. I'm thoroughly enjoying my life in this city full
of international flavor.
バンクーバーは自然に囲まれた美しい街で、すぐそばに海も山もあります。
Vancouver is a beautiful city surrounded by nature, close to both mountains and the sea.
初めはホームステイをしながら語学学校に通いました。ステイ先はフィリピン人家族のお宅
で、スクールメイトはもちろん皆外国人。正直に言えばカナダ文化に触れる機会はごくわずか
でした。
When I first came to Vancouver, I did a home stay and studied at an English language school.
The family I stayed with was Filipino and of course all of my schoolmates were from outside of
Canada. To be honest, I had only few chances to learn about Canadian culture.

Instead, Vancouver plays host to diverse cultures from all corners of the world. Walking down the
street, each person passing by has their own appearance and speaks a different language. There are
many different types of restaurants, imported from across the globe. These unique differences make
Vancouver interesting.
語学学校卒業後、現地企業でのインターンシップに参加しました。私が選んだのは留
学生向けの旅行会社での営業職です。毎日語学学校を訪ねてツアーを紹介し、午後から
はオフィスで案内や予約受付を行っていました。ネイティブスピーカーに囲まれての仕
事は大変でしたが、同時に一番有意義な体験となりました。また、特典としてビクトリ
アやウィスラーなどの観光地にも行くことができました。
After finishing English
language school, I
worked as an intern for
a Canadian company, a
travel agency whose
customers are mainly
international students. As a sales promoter, I visited English
schools every day to introduce our tours, and the afternoon, I worked at the office,
fielding questions from customers and making reservations. Though it was rather hard
to keep up with native English speakers, it was a great experience for me. As an
added benefit, I was able to
go sightseeing in places like
Victoria and Whistler.
ここへ来て沢山のことを学びましたが、何よりも大きな変化は、世界中に友達ができたこ
とで、世界の出来事が身近に感じられるようになったことです。国際交流は国際理解への第
一歩だと思います。
I learned a lot here since coming here, but more than anything else, I felt more closely
connected to the rest of the world through my new friendships. International exchange is an
important first step in global understanding.

A guidebook with living information for foreign residents of
Yonezawa as well as an illustrated trash disposal guide are available
in four languages – English, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. Both of
these guides are distributed free of charge, and are available digitally
in PDF format on the“Living Information”section of the YIRA
homepage and in print at the YIRA office.

当協会では国際交流・国際協力に関する下記の３つの分野に
YIRA is recruiting volunteers in the following categories
to assist with foreign exchange in Yonezawa. In particular,
we are looking for those with experience in Chinese and
Korean interpretation.
