In the first match against King William, the Chargers were down a few starters because of the state Technology Students Association (TSA) competition in Richmond so several players had to change positions. The Chargers’ first goal came when a corner kick bounced around in front of the goal and Emilie Smith kicked it in. In the second quarter, Andres Rowe came off the bench with aggressive play. “He gave me 150% every minute he was in and really made a difference on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball,” said MHS coach Eric Smith. MHS goalie Clayton Chandler had a strong second half. “Clayton was making some amazing reaction saves throughout the game and saved us multiple times,” said Smith. About halfway through the half, Andre Johnson moved up to forward and made some nice runs to the goal. This changed the Cavaliers’ defensive strategy, said Smith. “Andre received the ball at midfield and drove to about 30 yards from the goal. He launched a nice shot that tipped off the goalie’s hands and went into the net for our second goal.” Offensive players of the game were Smith, Johnson, and Elijah Fomin. Defensive players of the game were Andres Rowe, Will Howard, and Chandler, who had over 20 saves. On May 5, MHS traveled to Rappahannock with hopes of avenging a 1-0 loss from earlier in the season. “Our guys were really pumped up from our win against King William,” said Coach Smith. Early in the game Johnson made a great throw to Kian Cheatham, who made a dribble and lob feed to E. Smith, who scored the first MHS goal. MHS led 1-0 at the half and continued with “great-looking soccer from a group of players playing as a team” in the second half, said Coach Smith. William & Mary Branch Out students, along with volunteer Curt Dozier, crowded into an VMÄJL[VL_WSHPUHUK[HRLHSVVRH[[OLUL^JSPUPJWYLZLU[H[PVU[OL`KL]LSVWLK W&M students ‘branch out’ to help at Northern Neck Free Health Clinic A dozen students from the College of William & Mary (W&M) spent their spring break in March helping the Northern Neck Free Health Clinic (NNFHC) with a host of projects and tasks. Under the W&M “Branch Out” program, students devote themselves to living minimally while volunteering with a non-profit. The NNFHC hosted its first group of students last year and quickly became a popular Branch Out alternative. Openings for this year’s week at the clinic filled quickly, including one student who returned for a second time. “The students energized everyone here at the clinic, both volunteers and staff,” said NNFHC Executive Director Jean Nelson. “They love learning, helping, and interacting. They’re good-hearted and compassionate, and they help us get major projects started and completed. We love having them here.” “Thank you so much for a fantastic week,” wrote Leah Foley, the group’s co-leader. “I have learned so much, met some wonderful people, and have a true appreciation for the work this clinic does.” Co-leader Maia Tinder thanked the clinic staff and volunteers for “welcoming us, working with us, and taking your time to teach us so much. I’m so thankful for the time we’ve spent here and all I’ve learned.” All 12 students had similar comments. “This has been an amazing spring break. . . . The work you do is inspiring and so, so selfless. I will never forget my time here,” said one. “We love serving as a site for education as well as being a health-care home,” Nelson said. “If you wonder whether young people today have that helpful, volunteer spirit, these students put those concerns to rest. They work hard, and they inspire all of us.” The Free Health Clinic in Kilmarnock serves the Northern Neck and Middlesex County, and has an outreach office at Lower United Methodist Church in Hartfield. It’s open every Tuesday, 12:30-4:30 p.m. Currently, patients can be screened at the outreach office for eligibility, can pick up medicines, and can take care of administrative items, but there are no clinical services offered at the Hartfield site. The clinic provided $8,238,679 in services in 2013, which included $1.8 million (22% of the total) in services to Middlesex residents. Noted archaeologist will speak on ‘Powhatan at Werowocomoco’ The Mathews County Historical Society (MCHS) will continue its series “The Year of Discovering History in Mathews County” on Wednesday, May 21, at 7 p.m. at Kingston Parish Hall, 370 Main Street, Mathews. Randy Turner, a retired archaeologist with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, will be the speaker. His talk is titled “Searching for Powhatan at Werowocomoco.” Werowocomoco, was the principal residence of Indian Chief Powhatan. It served as the capital of the Powhatan chiefdom and was where Powhatan and Captain John Smith first met in December 1607. Turner will discuss what has been learned about the site from a decade of archaeological investigations and the recent discovery that a structure related to Powhatan is directly aligned with the summer solstice. Turner has written over 50 articles related to Virginia archaeology and ethnohistory. He has co-authored with Helen Rountree the book “Before and After Jamestown: Virginia’s Powhatans and YMCA seeks donations of used and new sports equipment The Middlesex Family YMCA is looking for new or gently-used sports equipment. All equipment will be donated to the YMCA Summer Camp and programs. Pick-up locations include the Middlesex Sports Complex on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; Middlesex YMCA May 24-June 7; Urbanna Farmers’ Market June 14. Needed items include soccer cleats, shin guards, outdoor games, board games, footballs, soccer balls, basketballs, and golf, lacrosse and tennis equipment. Donations and gift cards are welcome. To arrange for pickup or for more information, contact Ashley Walton at [email protected] or 804-8157683. This community service project is provided by 2014 Urbanna Oyster Festival Queen contestant Ashley Walton. Their Predecessors” and also was a contributing author to the book “John Smith’s Chesapeake Voyages, 1607-1609.” The May 21 program sponsored by the Mathews County Historical Society is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served after the program. For more information on this program contact Forrest Morgan at 804-3063558. The Werowocomoco site is on private property and not open to the public. The MCHS has received permission to have Turner lead a bus tour of the site on Saturday, May 31. As space is limited and only one bus is allowed on the premises, there will be only 44 reservations taken. The cost is $15 per person for reserved seating on the bus. This is a rare opportunity to see Powhatan’s 1607 village and have Turner explain the recentlydiscovered summer solstice alignment. Contact Josie Thorpe at 725-3862 to reserve a seat and for further details. (5-8-2t) farm news Signup under way for disaster assistance programs U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) Administrator Juan M. Garcia has announced that farmers and ranchers can now sign up for disaster assistance programs, reestablished and strengthened by the 2014 Farm Bill. The Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP) and the Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) will provide payments to eligible producers for livestock deaths and grazing losses that have occurred since the expiration of the livestock disaster assistance programs in 2011, and including calendar years 2012, 2013 and 2014. Enrollment also began on April 15 for producers with losses covered by the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program (ELAP) and the Tree Assistance Program (TAP) in 2011, when the programs expired, through 2014. ELAP provides emergency assistance to eligible producers of livestock, honeybees and farm-raised fish that have losses due to disease, adverse weather, or other conditions, such as wildfires. TAP provides financial assistance to qualifying orchardists and nursery tree growers to replant or rehabilitate eligible trees, bushes and vines damaged by natural disasters. LIP provides compensation to eligible livestock producers that have suffered livestock death losses in excess of normal mortality due to adverse weather and attacks by animals reintroduced into the wild by the federal government or protected by federal law. LFP provides compensation to eligible livestock producers that have suffered grazing losses due to drought in our area. “To expedite applications, all producers who experienced losses are encouraged to bring records documenting those losses to their local FSA county office,” said local FSA manager Jeff S. Davis. Typhoon nationals set for June 6-8 The Rappahannock River Yacht Club and the local Typhoon Fleet will host the 2014 Cape Dory Typhoon National Championship Regatta June 6-8. The event takes place at the boat launch area. Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 3-10, based in Callao, will be on hand to make sure life jackets are in good condition and still fit the intended wearer, check lines for wear, make sure fire extinguishers are serviceable, and check navigation lights to make sure they are working and that the lens covers are not dirty or cloudy. Matt Major, the director of facilities at Bethpage Camp-Resort, accepted the award. Major cited new improvements at Bethpage CampResort resulting in an increased level of sewage management for the property. Recently, a 72,000-gallon capacity tank was installed on the Bethpage Camp-Resort property. This new tank system allows optimal control of the volume of sewage that transfers into the Town of Urbanna system. This helps prevent an overload on the town’s sewer system during peak season occupancy at the resort. “Bethpage Camp-Resort has demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence and protecting the waterways of the Chesapeake Bay,” said campresort owner Walt Hurley Jr. “The resort will continue to make infrastructure investments that result in a cleaner and more pristine environment ‘Little Scholars’ camps planned at Ware Academy For access to all listings in this area search at www.masonrealty.com Little Scholars will offer summer camps at Ware Academy in Gloucester. The award recognized the area’s Watermen Tourism Training Program—a project that combined community development, business retention and expansion, and community involvement. This program was developed by Rappahannock Community College’s Workforce and Community Development office in collaboration with Chesapeake Environmental Communication. It offers guidance for watermen who wish to supplement their incomes by developing tourism-based businesses. In addition to providing a much-needed alternate source of income for Virginia’s working watermen, the program spurs cross-industry economic development throughout coastal Virginia, connects the public directly with working watermen in the capacity of educators and Chesapeake All phases of tree care Free Estimates 758-3407 Bay stewards, and emphasizes the benefits of buying local seafood. The program was nominated for the award by Chris Ingram, the economic development and tourism coordinator of Middlesex County. “It was certainly an honor to receive this year’s recognition from VEDA, highlighting our success with the Chesapeake Waterman Heritage Training Program,” said Jason Perry, RCC’s vice president of workforce development. “I think we have once again proven that RCC’s Workforce Development Office can train all job sectors to improve economic development within the region. Having strong partners such as Chesapeake Environmental Communications Inc. and the Middlesex County Economic Development Authority certainly is important. We appreciate their support, and look forward to future workforce training endeavors.” The CEDA awards, now in their eighth year, are designed to recognize outstanding communities in the Commonwealth for their efforts in advancing their economic viability. Winners are submitted by VEDA to the Southern Economic Development Council to be considered by that organization for a regional award.
