MESSAGE FROM THE CHICAGO OKINAWA KENJINKAI PRESIDENT
Hello Members & Friends,
I trust you’re all enjoying the warm and pleasant weather we have been experiencing
and hopefully no one has been knocked down by the early summer blast of heat. Well,
as many of you know, we held our 40th birthday party celebration on Saturday, May
27th and it was a wonderful success. The feedback I’ve received indicates to me that
everyone who attended the party apparently enjoyed it as much as I did. I received so
many compliments from the members of other Kenjinkais as well as our own members
and guests. Of course our success is a direct reflection of our organizations ability to
work together and the willingness of our many dedicated volunteers who dedicated
many hours of their personal time to make this celebration a success one.
There are many people that I would like to thank who volunteered their time and
energy but I can’t possibly name them all. However, a few must be specifically
acknowledged for their outstanding and exemplary input and help:
YOSHIKO JURAVIC: Vice President, who I feared would have a heart attack if she had to work one more day.
BOB HIGA: Who not only performed magically but worked as “kuroko” to lead the party to its successful conclusion.
TOM CORRAO: Our Newsletter Editor, who donated hundreds of hours to prepare the 40th anniversary slide show, the
program, and who is still plugging away at producing the DVD of the performance.
ETSUKO CRARY: Our Treasurer who did not go to bed until she balanced to the last penny.
LINDA ASATO: Who, like her brother Glenn, performed extraordinary well as our Master of Ceremonies!
Special thanks goes out to all who had any part in orchestrating the event. All “orchestra members” played in perfect tune and
each conducted their part well to insure a melodious, harmonious and very memorable 40th anniversary celebration.
As you already know, the World-Wide Uchinanchu Festival is going to take place in Okinawa this October. If you are
planning to attend the opening, closing ceremonies and/or other programs, you must register with the Kenjinkai. A list of all
attendees must be sent to the Okinawan government by the end of July so they can register you. If you are not registered with
the Kenjinkai, you will not able to attend any of the ceremonies/activities. If you know anyone who does not belong to the
Kenjinkai but wants to attend the festival, please inform him/her about the importance of the registration with the Kenjinkai.
If you are planning to attend the Uchinanchu Festival in October, please complete the enclosed form and send to: P.O. Box
721, Geneva, IL 60134-0721 at your earliest convenience so that I can prepare a list for committee members in Okinawa.
Also, please do not forget to take advantage of the Kenjinkai’s valuable scholarship program. If you are interested and would
like more information, please contact one of the officers.
At our annual picnic on Saturday, September 2nd 2006, we are planning to distribute our members’ directory. So, if you have
moved or have new phone number or email address, please update your information with Tom Pressley, our organizations
secretary.

メンバーの皆様,
皆様におかれましては夏バテもなさらずにお元気でお過ごしのことと思います。
5 月 27 日は本当に楽しいシカゴ沖縄県人会の“.40 回目の誕生日”でしたね。他州からいらして下さっ
た県人会の皆様から“飛行機、ホテル代は自払いだったけど、それ以上に得る物があったし本当に楽し
かった”と異口同音のコメントが寄せられいますので、メンバーの皆様とシェアーしたいと思います。
又、40 周年で頑張って下さったのボランティアの一人、一人の活躍振りをここに記したいのは山々で
すが、それは無理ですので、以下の数人の方々を代表で紹介したいと思います。副会長の芳子 Juravic
さんは祝賀会が後一日でも長引くと心臓マヒを起こして倒れるのではないかと思った程頑張ってくれま
した。 Bob Higa さんはマジシャンとしても最高でしたが、“裏方”としての頑張りようもそれ以上に
凄かったです。ニュースレター編集者の Tom Corrao さんは忙しいスケジュールにも拘わらず気の遠
くなるような時間を費やしてプログラムの表紙やスライドショー、DVD 等を作成するハッスル振り。
会計の悦子 Crary さんは最後の１セントまで合わないと寝られないという“完璧主義者。”又、リン
ダ安里さんはお兄さんのグレンさんに勝るとも劣らぬ名司会振りでしたね。
ボランティアの一人、一人が自分の“持ち場”を完璧にこなし、結果、美しいハーモニーをかもし出し
て観客を魅了したのだと思います。こうした素晴らしいボランティアという“オーケストラ”メンバー
と共に“演奏”することが出来たのは本当に幸せなことでした。40 周年祝賀会も勿論そうでしたが、
シカゴ県人会の全ての催し物はチムグクルから県人会を愛して下さるボランティアの皆様がいらっしゃ
るからこそ可能なのです。心より感謝申し上げます。
ご存知のように 10 月に沖縄で世界ウチナーンチュ大会が開催されます。大会に参加を予定されていら
っしゃる方は同封の申込書に必要事項をご記入なって：P. O. Box 721, Geneva, IL 60134-0721 へお送り
下さい。参加者のリストを作成し 7 月の末には県庁へ提出する必要がございますので出来るだけ早く返
送願います。県人会リストに載っていらしゃらない方は開会式、閉会式やその他の催し物に参加できま
せんのでご注意下さい。又、県人会メンバー以外の方でウチナーンチュ大会に参加を希望されていらっ
しゃるお友達や知人をご存知でしたら役員の方まで連絡するようお伝え下さい。
後、一月程で新学期を迎える学校が多くあります。シカゴ沖縄県人会には奨学金制度が設置されていま
すので興味のある方は Taeko Ayala、又は役員までご連絡下さい。
今年は恒例の 9 月 2 日のピクニックでメンバーの住所録を配布する予定ですので住所や電話番号に変更
のございましたメンバーは書記の Tom Pressley までご連絡願います。
短い夏を謳歌なさって下さい、それではピクニックでお会いしましょう！

シカゴ版「毛あしびー」に参加して

この度は、シカゴ沖縄県人会４０周年記念祝賀会に出席させていただき、誠にありがとうございました。会員の皆様
のあたたかいお人柄と、強いチームワークが伝わってくる素敵なパーティーで、何度感動の涙があふれそうになったか
知れません。シカゴ沖縄県人会はまさに「いちゃりばちょーでー」を具現化していると感じました。大和人である私
が、琉球舞踊に魅かれる理由を再確認させていただいたのと同時に、その場に同席させていただいた事に深く感謝いた
します。
そもそも私が琉球舞踊を習おうと決意したのは、東京の玉川大学在学中に、現在の師佐藤太圭子（さとうたかこ／太
圭流家元・沖縄県立芸術大学教授）の踊りをビデオで観て、鳥肌が立つほど感動したのがきっかけでした。玉川大学の
小山正（花柳伊三郎）先生の指導の下、日本～アジアの民族舞踊に強い興味を持っていた私は、自分の中に流れる「ア
ジア人」としての血を強く意識し、日本とアジア諸国の架け橋「沖縄」について勉強したいと思っていた矢先の事でし
た。
どうしても佐藤太圭子の弟子になりたかった私は、無謀にも電話一本で突然押しかけたのですが、そんな私を師はい
たって普通に、笑顔で迎え入れてくれたのが 12 年ほど前のことです。その後沖縄県立芸術大学大学院に進学し、師の指
導の下、当初の目標であった最高賞と教師免許をいただき、現在沖縄県国際交流人材育成財団の派遣留学生として、
「外国人への琉球舞踊教授方法の研究」をテーマに、フィラデルフィアの芸術大学で実践を通して勉強しています。
厳しく育ててくれた師に、心から感謝するのと同時に、何度もやめようと思ったのもまた事実です。芸の厳しさだけ
ではなく、「大和人が何故琉球舞踊を？」という度々の問いかけは、「好きだから」というだけではいけないのだろう
かという自問に変わり、やがて私の中で小さな棘となって、踊ることが嫌になった時期もありました。挫けそうになっ
た時支えとなったのは、師の「踊りで納得させなさい」という厳しいながらも愛情深い励ましでした。
加えて、友人たちとの毛あしびーや、フィールドワークで訪れた村々の祭りで、共に同じ歌を歌い、同じ踊りを踊れ
ることの喜びと感動の体験も、大きな支えの一つでした。歌と踊りを通して一つになれる、その感動を少しでも多く味
わいたいが為に、今まで稽古を積んできたと言っても過言ではありません。
今回の祝賀会は、主催した方々の“welcome！！”という気持ちと、“誰よりも自分たちが楽しむぞ！！！”という
心意気が、会場中に満ちていて、まさに「シカゴ版毛あしびー」と言えるでしょう。そのような皆さんのオープンマイ
ンドに助けられて、私は今までで一番楽しく、気持ちよく「鳩間節」を踊る事が出来ました。
また、もう一つ「いちゃりばちょーでー」の精神を表しているのが、県人会の Board メンバーおよび祝賀会実行委員
会の皆さんの面々ではないでしょうか。皆さん沖縄の文化・芸能が好きという、ただそれだけの（しかし強固な）理由
で集まっていて、そこには沖縄人・大和人・アメリカ人などという区別は全く感じられませんでした。各々が最も自分
に合ったやり方で、沖縄文化への愛情表現をしていたのが、とても印象に残っています。（今でも脳裏に焼きついてい
るのが、よしこ Juravic さんの、祭太鼓を踊っているときの子供のようにキラキラした笑顔・・・私もあんな風に踊れる
ようになりたいです。）
書きたい事はまだまだあります。全米 17 州および南米からも参加があり、ウチナーネットワークの広さと強さに、こ
れまた感動しました。また参加した州がそれぞれ持ち芸を持っていてどれも素晴らしかった事。衣裳から小道具、カン
プーまで手作りであった事などなど、数えあげたらキリがありません。二次会で行ったお店で、皆さんお疲れだと思い
きや、ずーーーっと歌って踊っていた事も忘れられません。こうした喜びと感動を通して、言葉に出来ない大切な事
を、たくさんの人に教えていただきました。
発会から 40 年、様々な事があったと思いますが、現在「いちゃりばちょーでー」を実践しているシカゴ沖縄県人会
は、まさに「架け橋」であり、私の理想です。世界中にこのようなグループがたくさん出来る事を願ってやみません。
将来、私は琉球舞踊を世界に PR する、言わば“宣伝マン”になりたいと思っていますが、皆さんをお手本に、今後も
精進していきたいと思います。
最後になりましたが、このシカゴ版「毛あしびー」に連れてきてくださった、NY 沖縄県人会会長の、定子与那覇－
Tursi さんに感謝いたします。

シカゴ沖縄県人会 40 周年記念祭のご成功おめでとうございます。インディアナ沖縄県人会もこの光栄な
祝賀祭にご招待頂き、会員一同心に残る楽しい思い出をきざみました。
妙子さんの優雅な着物姿でウチナーグチの会長挨拶は魅力的でした。また、リンダさんは聡明な声でプ
ログラムを進行させ、ラッフルチケットの進行をなさった比嘉さんのユウモアは、会場を賑わせ、そし
て素晴らしいマジックショウで締めくくりとプログラムの流れのスムースさに感激しました。これもシ
カゴ沖縄県人会の会員一同の団結、協力なしには成功を期し得なかったと思います。そして、各県人会
に対する皆様のお心使い、心からお礼を申し上げます。
他州県人会との交流が持てた事も嬉しく、この素晴らしい企画を組んで下さった妙子会長に感謝しま
す。これから先、県人会同士親睦を深め、協力し、糸口が絶えないように努力していきたいと思いま
す。

シカゴ沖縄県人会の皆様へ
シカゴ沖縄県人会 40 周年祝賀会は大成功でした。又、色々とおもてなし頂き有難うございました。
余興を８州の県人会でしたこともとても良いアイディアで、私もいつかそういう風に他県人会と交流の
場を持ちたいと思っていただけにシカゴ県人会の会長のこのアイディアには本当に共鳴しました。
プログラムもバラエティーに富んでいたし Bob Higa さんのマジックや司会も楽しかったです。又、サ
ンシングループも最高で、リーダーの米子さんやトムさんの美声はプロ並みだと思いました。
それに祝賀会の前夜には夕食を一緒にという誘いが会長の妙子さんからあった時は、単純に夕食だけだ
と思っていました。夕食も良かったのですが、それ以上に他県人会と交わした意見や話題は尽きる事が
なく、とても貴重な体験が出来たと思っています。
40 年間という長い経験がこの祝賀会を“成功”に導いたのでしょう。本当におめでとうございます。

Farewell Mayumi Cox
One of the sad things that I have found about being a member of the Chicago Okinawa Kenjinkai is that
many members are married to military personnel or have jobs that cause them to move about from time
to time. This is the case with my friend Mayumi Cox who in our last newsletter wrote about how she
came to be a member of the Chicago Okinawa Kenjinkai. Well in Mayumi’s case her husband works for
the Department of Defense and was assigned to Washington DC. Mayumi has been staying in the
Chicago area because her girls were still in school and she needed to sell their house. Because the
market for buying houses has been slow we were able to enjoy Mayumi’s company over the past
several months. The house finally did sell though since the last newsletter was published and just this
morning Mayumi and her girls set out to meet her husband in Virginia where they will settle. We had a
going away party for her at my home and many of the Kenjinkai’s members attended. I believe that
Mayumi is probably one of the strongest Okinawan women that I have ever met handling the tasks she
has in the past few months. Her friendship with my wife and the others in the Matsuri Daiko Group was
a blessing and we will all miss her. Here are some photos that I took before she left that I would like to

こんにちは、妙子さん。
シカゴ沖縄県人会創立 40 週年記念の総会大変おめでとうございました。
お誘いを頂き、心より感謝いたします。
毎回送られてくるニュースレターを通して役員の皆様の日ごろのご活躍にいつも心を惹かれるものが
ありました。妙子さんから友情出演のお話がありましたときは、二つ返事で参加させていただきまし
た。
ニュースレターで見る、個性豊かなメンバーの顔ぶれ、そしてもっとも大切なチームワークが、会場
の隅々にまで見え、イベントがスムーズに進んでいることにほっとしたのも覚えております。
シカゴ県人会の皆様のご配慮により総会前日に持たれた、デイナー式の会合には、同じく友情出演で
駆けつけて下さった 8 州の県人会の会長、役員の皆様が、それぞれの日ごろの活動や、意見交換が活
発に行われ、大変意義のある会合で、40 周年総会は始まったともいえましょう。
総会の始まりから、終わりまで、文化、言語の違いを越えて、いちゃりばちょーでーの、スピリット
がシカゴ県人会の家族の中にしっかりと、根が張っていることも実感しました。舞台で繰り広げられ
る老若男女の、演舞は、私達の祖先が残してくれた精神の豊かさを感じました。
私たちは、今後将来に向けて、地域、社会に平和の心を語り合っていく使命があるのではないかと思
います。
シカゴ訪問が、今後のニューメキシコ沖縄県人会、そして各州の県人会の発展につながるものと確信
して、これからも更に各州の皆様と、手を取り合って：美ら島おきなわのネットワーク作りに貢献し
ていきたいです。

Dear Ms. Ayala,
It was one of the most pleasant and memorable evening that I have enjoyed since I came to
Chicago. All of the participants from various corners of the US and the rest of the world contributed to
the success of the 40th anniversary. Congratulations!
I am sure by now that you as well as your enthusiastic colleagues are relaxed with the feeling of
satisfaction. For your information, my wife who missed this opportunity was able to enjoy the Okinawa
dance performances conducted in conjunction with the MAJC Japan Festival this year.
I hope you and the officers, as well as members of the Chicago Okinawa Kenjinkai, will continue to
enjoy the spirit of “ichariba cho de” and will continue to be a bridge between you and the rest of the
people here.

4th Joint Performance with Kariyushikai in Okinawa
The Performing Group of the Chicago Okinawa Kenjinkai and the
Kariyushikai will have its 4th Joint Performance on Monday, October 9th,
2006. (A national holiday in Japan for observance of “Athletic Day”)
Admission is free and you can invite your family and friends in Okinawa.
Seats are limited so please reserve seats in advance.
After the performance, you are also welcome to attend a reception dinner.
Tickets for the dinner are ￥3,000 (about $27~28) /person. You can attend
the joint performance or reception or both. Please contact Taeko Ayala at
630-262-0756 for further information or to RSVP by 7/31/06.
かりゆし会との第四回親睦公演
第 4 回ウチナーンチュ大会で 10 月に沖縄に行く際、かりゆし会との第四回
目の親睦公演を 2006 年 10 月 9 日（体育の日で公休日）に計画しておりま
す。
入場は無料で、アメリカや沖縄にいらっしゃるご家族やお友達もご招待する
ことが出来ますが、座席に限定がございますので整理券が必要です。
又、公演の後、親睦会（夕食と余興 - お一人様￥3,000）が用意されており

Bill Peterson
1928 - 2006
Long-time member, Bill Peterson, passed away on Wednesday, June 14th. The
memorial service was held at Glenfield Baptist Church in Glen Ellyn. In recent years,
he and his wife, Mieko, rarely missed the New Year’s party and annual picnic. At last
year’s picnic, many of you will remember the whole Peterson family (Bill, Mieko, and
their daughter, Danna) having a good time while mingling with fellow members and
friends. He was a very gentle, soft-spoken person. He will be missed very much by the
people who knew him. Please remember the Peterson family in your prayers.

I think her Okinawan Heritage was shining through causing a reflection on her design!
