Fully funded PhD position on social studies of science at the University of Lugano
The group on Management and Performance of Research and Higher Education Institutions at the Faculty
of Economics of the University of Lugano, led by Dr. Benedetto Lepori, invites applications for one PhD
position in the area of sociology and economics of science. The position will be in collaboration with ongoing research activities on methodological rigor, scientific publishing and impact in the Faculty of

The group is one of the main research centers in Europe on research policy and higher education studies. It
is part of the Centre for Organizational Research, a leading research and educational center in the field of

The successful candidate will work on different projects concerning the dynamics of research groups (with a
focus on communication sciences) and practices of scholarly publishing, including the behavior of
academics and the working of peer review systems. Your tasks will include collection of data, as well as their
(quantitative and qualitative) analysis. Moreover, you will have the opportunity to develop your own PhD
project within this area.

Apart from the basic requirements for admission to the Ph.D. program, we are looking for the following:

Master degree in economics or social sciences (completed by the start date of employment) with
excellent grades.

Excellent knowledge of English.

Knowledge of quantitative methods, including descriptive statistics and basic techniques of quantitative
analysis (regressions, etc.).
Previous competences in the domain of sociology of science are of advantage.
The position will be full time for a three-year period under usual contractual conditions of the University of
Lugano. Start date of the employment to be agreed.
