1 pair 4½mm (no 7) (US 7) needles
TENSION
20 sts and 25 rows to 10 cm measured over st st using 4½mm (US
7) needles.
FINISHED SIZE
Completed square measures 19 cm (7½ in) wide by 19 cm (7½ in)
long.
SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS
Inc in next st = on a RS row knit into front of next st then into
the back of the same st slipping st off left needle, on a WS row purl
into front of next st then into the back of the same st slipping st off
left needle; M1R = make one stitch by picking up the horizontal
loop before next stitch from behind and working into front of it;
M1L = make one stitch by picking up the horizontal loop before
next stitch from front and working into back of it.
Pattern note: If making Afghan knit 7 squares, if making small
cushion knit 2 squares and if making oblong cushion knit 4 squares.
Make one version of square will give you a defined line at the
edge of the squares where making the stitches, as it does on the
decreasing section of the square. If making the increase version
there will not be a defined line at the edge of this side of the square
but only on the decrease side.

Using 4½mm (US 7) needles and yarn A cast on 2 sts.
Row 1 (RS): Using yarn A, (inc in next st) twice. 4 sts.
Row 2: Using yarn A, P1, inc in next st, (twice), P1. 6 sts.
Increase Version
Row 3: Using yarn B, K1, inc in next st, K to last 3 sts, inc in next
st, K2. 8 sts.
Row 4: Using yarn B, purl.
Row 5: Using yarn A, K1, inc in next st, K to last 3 sts, inc in next
st, K2. 10 sts.
Row 6: Using yarn A, P1, inc in next st, P to last 3 sts, inc in next
st, P2. 12 sts.
Rows 7 and 8: Using yarn B, as rows 3 and 4. 14 sts.
Rows 9 and 10: Using yarn A, as rows 5 and 6. 18 sts.
