Uit Encyclopedie
Inleiding
De reden dat ik dit onderwerp heb gekozen is omdat ik voor het
beginnen aan mijn studies Japanologie veel negatieve reacties te
horen kreeg over Japan, met name de dolfijnen- en walvissenjacht
die er wordt uitgevoerd. Ik was zeer benieuwd wat nu eigenlijk de
feiten waren achter deze activiteiten, zodat ik mijn eigen mening
kon formuleren.
In de loop van dit jaar heb ik dan eindelijk de documentaire gezien
die zo veel commotie heeft teweeggebracht, ik heb het hier
natuurlijk over "The Cove". Vanzelfsprekend was ik ook eerst
geschokt bij het zien van sommige beelden, maar wat mij vooral
opviel is dat de documentaire een éénzijdig verhaal verteld, en
probeert in te spelen op de emotionele kant van het publiek.
Hoewel ze enkele wetenschappelijk bewijzen tonen, wordt er echt
niet goed en voldoende gecommuniceerd met de plaatselijk
bevolking in Taiji, en focussen de makers zich enkel op het leed van de dolfijnen. Ik kwam tot de conclusie dat de dolfijnenjacht mede
een cultuurprobleem is, één dat we niet zomaar mogen bekijken vanuit onze Westerse moraal en ethiek.
Het doel van dit onderwerp is dan ook een helder licht proberen te laten schijnen op deze hele zaak, zodat mogelijke misverstanden
beter begrepen kunnen worden en erover kan gepraat worden zonder dat de praktijken die te maken hebben met dolfijnenjacht meteen
als "barbaars" worden afgedaan. Ook wil ik uitzoeken of de dolfijnenjacht in Taiji wel echt toelaatbaar is op de manier waarop ze
wordt uitgevoerd, en wil ik het culturele aspect proberen op de achtergrond te zetten om zo een objectieve weergave van de feiten te
bekomen.

Na het vinden van de thesis over de walvissenjacht in Japan had ik besloten toch niet verder te werken rond het gekozen onderwerp,
daarmee heb ik besloten maar één Japanse databank te raadplegen. Als ik ga zoeken naar bronnen in verband met een nieuw onderwerp
ga ik wel gebruik maken van Webcat Plus en andere denk ik.

CiNii heeft me getoond dat er ook in Japan over "The Cove" onderzoek werd gedaan, en dat er waarschijnlijk geen nood is aan nog een
paper over de dolfijnenjacht in Taiji. Wel twijfel ik in hoeverre ik de artikels en papers ga kunnen raadplegen, ik kreeg wel toegang tot
enkele pdf's, maar lang niet alles.

Buiten de documentaire "The Cove" heb ik ook een korte Japanse documentaire gezien als soort van reactie op "The Cove", maar ik
moet toch even zeggen dat dit één van de slechtste documentaires is, als ik het al zo mag noemen, die ik ooit gezien heb... Ook heb ik
een reeks van Animal Planet gespot, maar deze heb ik nog niet gezien.

Besluit
Alhoewel het een zeer interessant onderwerp is, denk ik niet dat ik er een paper over kan schrijven. Er zijn namelijk al voldoende
papers in Japan zelf over dit onderwerp en ik denk niet dat ik nuttig zou kunnen bijdragen met nog een werk dat over de dolfijnenjacht
in Taiji handelt. Eerst dacht ik mijn onderwerp te kunnen uitbreiden naar de hele walvissenjacht in Japan, maar hier heb ik een
uitstekende thesis over gevonden van een studente aan de KUL en ik denk niet dat vanuit een andere invalshoek werken iets zou
bijdragen aan het hele discours hierrond. Ik ben wel tevreden over het feit dat ik nu meer weet over hoe aan voldoende en goede
bronnen te komen zonder alleen gebruik te maken van Google.
