De tentoonstelling is ontwikkeld door de Solomon R.
Guggenheim Foundation, New York, in samenwerking
met het Cobra Museum voor Moderne Kunst en is
gebaseerd op de tentoonstelling Art of Another Kind:
International Abstraction and the Guggenheim, 1949–1960
die te zien was in 2012 in het New York.
Er zijn lezingen en rondleidingen die de mogelijkheid
bieden om meer kennis te verkrijgen over de werken,
de kunststromingen en de politieke en maatschappelijke
bewegingen uit de jaren ‘50.

Er is een veelzijdig programma met 11 lezingen
samengesteld waarmee dieper op de verschillende aspecten van de tentoonstelling wordt
ingegaan. Op onze website vindt u daar alle
informatie over. De lezingen staan gepland op
13 en 27 april; 11, 16, 18 en 25 mei; 8, 15 en 29 juni;
en op 24 en 31 augustus. Vanaf 14.30 uur. Deelname 12,50 euro voor de lezing (excl. entree).

A diverse series of eleven lectures looks more
closely at the various aspects of this exhibition.
Information about the lecture series can be

are scheduled for April 13 and 27, May 11, 16, 18
and 25, June 8, 15 and 29, and August 24 and 31,
at 2:30 PM. Admission € 12.50 (not including

The Cobra Museum of Modern Art presents
51 paintings and sculptures from the collection
of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in
New York, the first time that works from the
Guggenheim’s core collection of mid-century
art have been on view in the Netherlands. The
exhibition focuses on the 1950s, a decade that
saw radical new developments in art. In addition
to American masters such as Jackson Pollock,
Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning and Sam
Francis, the exhibition presents work by less
well-known international pioneers, including
William Baziotes, José Guerrero, Conrad
Marca-Relli, Georges Mathieu and Kenzo
Okada, as well as work by the Cobra artists
Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel and Asger Jorn.
From the Guggenheim Collection to the Cobra
Museum of Modern Art, viert een vitale fase in
de geschiedenis van het Guggenheim Museum,
een decennium waarin de naoorlogse moderne
kunst en de samenleving radicaal veranderden.
Het Cobra Museum presenteert kunst die met
een vooruitziende blik door directeur James
Johnson Sweeney in de jaren ‘50 voor het Guggenheim Museum werd aangekocht. Sweeney
sprak van ‘tastebreakers’: kunstenaars die ‘onze
artistieke grenzen openbreken en verleggen’.
Een aantal van die kunstwerken was in 1959 te zien
tijdens de legendarische openingstentoonstelling
in het iconische gebouw van Frank Lloyd Wright. On both sides of the Atlantic, the 1950s witnessed a wide range of audacious styles of art
and avant-garde initiatives, from Abstract
Expressionism and Art Informel to artist groups
like Cobra and Spain’s Dau al Set. Experimental
art was reborn, with fresh new incentive in freedom of individual expression and spontaneity.
Artists experimented with unorthodox materials,
techniques and subject matter. Capturing the
zeitgeist, the French writer Michel Tapié spoke of
Un art autre – art of another kind – a radical break
with all traditional ideas about style and composition, and a shift to something wholly “other”.
From the Guggenheim Collection to the Cobra
Museum of Modern Art also celebrates a vital
period in the history of the Guggenheim
Museum, a decade in which post–World War II
modern art and societies as a whole underwent
fundamental changes. The exhibition includes
several artworks acquired for the Guggenheim in
the 1950s, under the prescient vision of director
James Johnson Sweeney. Sweeney was in search
of the “tastebreakers”, artists who “break open
and enlarge our artistic frontiers”, and a number
of these works were part of the 1959 inaugural
exhibition of the Guggenheim’s iconic Frank

In het Cobra Museum voor Moderne Kunst
worden 51 schilderijen en sculpturen uit de
collectie van het Solomon R. Guggenheim
Museum, New York tentoongesteld, waarmee
voor het eerst een keuze uit de kerncollectie midcentury art van het befaamde museum in Nederland te zien is. De tentoonstelling richt de blik
op de jaren ’50, een decennium waarin radicale
artistieke ontwikkelingen plaatsvonden. Behalve
van Amerikaanse grootheden als Jackson
Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning en
Sam Francis is er ook werk van minder bekende
internationale pioniers, zoals William Baziotes,
José Guerrero, Conrad Marca-Relli, Georges
Mathieu, Kenzo Okada, en van kunstenaars die
aan Cobra deelnamen: Pierre Alechinsky, Karel
Appel en Asger Jorn.
In de jaren ‘50 ontstond aan beide zijden van de
Atlantische Oceaan een grote verscheidenheid
aan gewaagde kunststijlen en avant-garde initiatieven, van het abstract expressionisme en Art
Informel tot kunstenaarsgroepen als Cobra en
het Spaanse Dau al Set. De experimentele kunst
beleefde een opleving; er ontstond hernieuwde
belangstelling voor vrijheid van individuele expressie en spontaniteit. Kunstenaars experimenteerden met onorthodoxe materialen, technieken
en onderwerpen. De Franse schrijver Michel
Tapié sprak van Un art autre – een radicale breuk
met alle traditionele ideeën over stijl en compositie en een verschuiving naar iets totaal ‘anders’.
