We are pleased to announce the launch of our new internet website on
the culture heritage route (www.heritage-route.eu) as a part of the
international project ‘Cradles of European Culture’.
The virtual ‘Culture Heritage Route’, which is part of the ‘Cradles of European Culture Project’, focuses on
the presentation of the Early Middle Ages and their importance for the development of current Europe. This
educational trail tries to guide the visitor through individual sites that represent the backbone of the project.
In view to enable a comparison of their historical setting the trail’s structure summarises the development of
the sites, offers answers to the question of why people chose those particular sites for their settlements,
whether natural conditions or earlier settlement has influenced their early medieval boom. Further, we
show the early medieval life of the sites, their local, national, and international importance. Chapters
dedicated to later historical phases on the one hand concern the later life of individual seats, their
transformation and decline, on the other, the time of the recognition of their historical value and the
contribution of their interpretation to the local (for example Ename) as well as national (Prague Castle) or
European cultural identity (Ravenna, Ingelheim).
The Heritage Route is part of the Cradles of European Culture Project (2010–2015), realized thanks to the
support by the European Union’s Culture Programme and Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. The
team of authors consists of 49 experts from nine different European countries, 13 different partner
institutions, and 14 affiliated institutions. In the Czech Republic it is supervised by the Institute of
Archaeology at Prague and the National Museum.
The Heritage Route includes the following sites: Biskupija Crkvina (HR), Ename (BE), Gradišče above Bašelj
(SL), Ingeheim am Rhein (DE), Kostoľany pod Tribečom (SK), Montmajour Abbey (FR), Nijmegen, Het
Valkhof (NL), Ravenna (IT), Velzeke (BE), and Prague Castle (CZ).
The website www.heritage-route.eu contains vast textual and pictorial material of a scientific nature
dedicated to ten sites. They are accessible only in English. A large amount of practical information facilitates
the visit to these sites. We provide GPS navigation to interesting historical monuments located there as well.
In addition, the website maintains a news blog on the CEC Project and individual sites, various related
activities and events. You can subscribe to a Newsletter (only in English). The website was edited by Jana
Maříková-Kubková, Katarína Chlustiková, and Katarína Válová (Institute of Archaeology, Prague). The texts
and other published material are the work of 26 experts from partner institutions of the CEC Project.
