A RICH PAST
This city’s rich history began about twenty
centuries ago. In 47 A.D. the Romans built a
fortress as part of reinforcements along the
Rhine where the Cathedral square (Domplein)
is situated today. In the 7th century, when the
English missionary Willibrord set h

in that old fort, a town began to develop.
Utrecht then started to grow into an important
city with considerable ecclesiastical power. On
church feast days, churches, monasteries, convents and abbeys were full. Many traces of these
buildings can be seen throughout the city.

Dom Tower
The Dom Tower, over 600 years old and the
highest medieval tower in the Netherlands,

metres, it soars above the Cathedral

There is just one Utrecht creation more
famous than the Rietveld chair: Miffy,
the little rabbit Dick Bruna created in 1955.
The dick bruna huis is a museum for the
young and old and has Dick Bruna’s work
permanently on display.
The Rietveld Schröder House
Visit the Rietveld Schröder House.
Constructed in 1924 by furniture maker
and architect Gerrit Rietveld, this is the
only building that was ever realised
according to the architectonic principles
of the ‘De Stijl’ artistic trend. Utrecht is
internationally known as the city where
furniture maker and architect Gerrit
Rietveld (1888-1964) lived and worked
all his life.
The buildings in the Utrecht Science Park
reflect the development in building styles
over the last 50 years: from the huge
concrete Kruyt building to the modern
David de Wied building. The park includes
several architecturally striking buildings
like the Educatorium (Architects OMA,
Rem Koolhaas with Christophe Cornubert)
and the university library (Architects Wiel
Arets & Associates).
Trajectum Lumen
An exploratory expedition in the dark
which takes in artistically highlighted
locations in the magnificent Utrecht
city centre. From the centrally located
Vredenburg, a light trail in the ground
leads to works of art by renowned light
artists who bring to life the present and

English is widely spoken in Utrecht and
many people have a command of several
other languages.
CLIMATE
Utrecht’s climate is quite temperate, with
mild summers and cold winters. Rain is
spread fairly evenly throughout the year.
Spring is sunny and pleasant, while hot
and humid weather can occur from June
to September. October and November
are usually quite wet, while December to
February are cold, but often sunny.
DRESS CODE
Utrecht is a casual city. Restaurants at
some smarter hotels may require men to
wear a suit and a tie. Dark suits for men
and neat attire for women are common in
business and banking circles. Generally,
however, the dress code is relaxed, with
T-shirts and jeans as common as black
ties at the opera.

THE UTRECHT REGION
Utrecht has been one of the most important
provinces in the Netherlands for centuries. Trade
and industry flourished early in the province,
benefiting not only its cities, but also its regional
artisans and farmers alike. Long a wealthy
province, Utrecht’s prosperity is evident in its
attractive villages, towns, and numerous country
estates. Nearby the city of Utrecht, the forests
and heathlands of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug
National Park beckon passers-by to enjoy a
beautiful walking or cycling tour. Utrecht’s
vibrant countryside, the Crooked Rhine region
(so named for the river’s many bends), is nestled
at the foot of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National
Park. Here the New Dutch Water Defence Line
meets the ancient border defence known as the
Roman Limes. Like the Utrechtse Heuvelrug
National Park, the Crooked Rhine region has its
own lovely estates, country houses and castles.
Small-scale fruit growers welcome visitors to
their farms to enjoy seasonal fruits and even,
perhaps, a picnic. On the western side of Utrecht
lies the Green Heart: a Dutch nature reserve

local artisanal products available for sampling.
The charming villages and towns, expansive
nature and plentiful Dutch lakes are well worth a
visit. The equally enticing Vecht region has a
sprightly river with elegant bank-side country

Vecht is enclosed to the east and west by stunning nature reserves and the strong fortresses of
the New Dutch Water Defence Line, a cunning
water management system for military defence.
The Eemland region, which counts Amersfoort,
Bunschoten Spakenburg among its distinguished
cities, completes the mosaic of scenic terrain in
and around the city of Utrecht. Whether you are

The historic Michaëls chapel, once the private
chapel of the bishop of Utrecht and today a
