Ongeacht het muziekgenre gaat de AB
steevast voor kwaliteit. In de 2013 kon
de noise van Pixies in één adem worden
genoemd met het gitaargeweld van Amon
Amarth en de beats van Rudimental. En
de jazz van José James sloot perfect aan
bij de funk van Nile Rodgers. Uit elk genre
ontkurkte AB in 2013 de grand cru.
Quel que soit le genre musical, l’AB opte
toujours pour la qualité. En 2013, nous
avons aligné la noise des Pixies, la virulence
des guitares d’Amon Amarth et les beats
de Rudimental. Le jazz de José James s’est,
lui, magnifiquement associé au funk
de Nile Rodgers. Pour chaque genre l’AB
a pu dénicher la perle rare en 2013.
AB invariably goes for quality, irrespective
of the music genre. In 2013, the noise of
Pixies could be named in the same breath
as the guitar power of Amon Amarth and the
beats of Rudimental. The jazz of José James
also perfectly complemented the funk of Nile
Rodgers. In every genre, AB uncorked the
grand cru in 2013.

“Je had erbij moeten zijn.” Met dát gevoel
stuurden we ook in 2013 de mensen
naar huis. Want een concert in de AB is
een unieke ervaring. Omwille van het
authentieke karakter, de huiselijke sfeer
en de uitzonderlijke akoestiek. En omwille
van de specifieke omvang van onze zalen:
zelfs de grootste artiesten kan je hier als
fan van zeer dichtbij bewonderen.

AB gaat en staat voor deskundigheid op
internationaal niveau. Dit weerspiegelt
zich op alle vlakken: in de programmatie,
in de akoestiek van de zalen en op alle
ondersteunende gebieden, van marketing
en communicatie over horeca tot de
administratie. De AB steunt hiervoor op een
team van gepassioneerde vakmensen.

AB goes for and stands for expertise at
an international level. This is reflected
in every aspect: in the programming, in
the acoustics of the halls, and in every
operational area, from marketing &
communication via hospitality and on to
the administration. The AB relies on a
passionate team of professionals.
De AB is geen ivoren toren. Wij delen onze
unieke expertise via stages, masterclasses,
rondleidingen en samenwerkingsverbanden,
zoals bijvoorbeeld met de PXL hogeschool
uit Hasselt.
L’AB n’est toutefois pas une tour d’ivoire
et partage son savoir faire unique à travers
des stages, des master classes, des visites
guidées et des accords de collaboration,
comme par exemple avec la PXL hogeschool
d’Hasselt.
The AB is no ivory tower. We share
our unique expertise via internships,
masterclasses, tours and collaborations
– such as with the PXL school of higher
education in Hasselt, for example.
GEZOND ARTISTIEK-COMMERCIEEL
EVENWICHT
We streven naar een mooi evenwicht
tussen jong artistiek talent en commerciële
zwaargewichten. In 2013 liep de grote zaal
vol voor internationale kleppers als Patti
Smith, Cat Power en Black Rebel Motorcycle
Club terwijl nieuw talent als Disclosure,
Willis Earl Beal en Snarky Puppy in de
AB Club uit de startblokken mocht schieten.
Van eigen bodem deden Stromae, Goose,
Ozark Henry en Trixie Whitley de grote
zaal vol lopen. In de AB Club werd dan
weer een platform gegeven aan de nieuwe
lichting met onder andere Flying Horseman,
Psycho44 en Madensuyu.
UNE EXPÉRIENCE MUSICALE
INDIVIDUELLE
« Tu aurais dû être là » : c’est avec ce
sentiment que les gens sont à nouveau
sortis de chez nous en 2013. Car un concert
à l’AB, c’est une experience unique en
raison de son caractère authentique, de son
atmosphère familiale et de son incroyable
acoustique. Et également en raison de la
dimension spécifique de nos salles. Même les
plus grands artistes peuvent être appréciés
dans un rapport de proximité par leurs fans.
UN ÉQUILIBRE SAIN ENTRE
L’ARTISTIQUE ET LE COMMERCIAL
Nous visons un bel équilibre entre la promotion de jeunes talents et la programmation
d’artistes de renom. En 2013, la grande salle
a affiché complet pour de nombreuses pointures internationales comme Patti Smith, Cat
Power et Black Rebel Motor Cycle Club tandis
que de nouveaux talents comme Disclosure,
Willis Earl Beal et Snarky Puppy démarraient
dans les starting-blocks à l’AB Club. Parmi
les artistes belges, Stromae, Goose, Ozark
Henry et Trixie Whitley ont joué à guichets
fermés dans la grande salle. L’AB Club, quant
à lui, a à nouveau servi de plate-forme à la
relève musicale belge avec notamment Flying
Horseman, Psycho44 et Madensuyu.
PERSONAL MUSICAL EXPERIENCE
“You should have been there.” That is
the feeling we again sent people home
with in 2013. Because a concert in the
AB is a unique experience. Due to the
genuine character, the homey vibe and
the exceptional acoustics. Also due to
the specific size of our halls: as a fan,
you can admire even the biggest of artists
in close proximity.
HEALTHY ARTISTIC-COMMERCIAL
BALANCE
We strove for a good balance between
young artistic talent and commercial
heavy-weights. In 2013 the Main Hall filled
for international hotshots like Patti Smith,
Cat Power and Black Rebel Motor Cycle
Club while new talent like Disclosure,
Willis Earl Beal and Snarky Puppy shot
out of the starting blocks in the AB Club.
Established home-grown acts like Stromae,
Goose, Ozark Henry and Trixie Whitley
filled the Main Hall. Then in the AB Club
a platform was given to a new Belgian
wave, with the likes of Flying Horseman,
Psycho44 and Madensuyu.

De AB is veel meer dan een concertzaal.
Wij hebben een neus voor nieuw talent.
Genres die nog geen naam hebben, komen
hier al aan bod. En wij denken vérder
dan de zaal: door te investeren in nieuwe
technologieën brengen we de muziek buiten
de AB. In 2013 installeerden we nieuwe
camera’s waarmee onze concerten vanaf nu
ook in high definition de wereld kunnen
worden ingestuurd via onze eigen website,
ons YouTube kanaal, websites van derden
én zelfs TV-zenders.

Nous avons du flair pour dégoter de
nouveaux talents et nous proposons
régulièrement des genres musicaux qui
n’ont même pas encore trouvé de nom.
Nous réfléchissons aussi au-delà de la salle
même. En investissant dans les nouvelles
technologies, nous cherchons à sortir la
musique de l’AB. En 2013, nous avons
installé de nouvelles caméras qui nous
permettent désormais de diffuser nos
concerts en haute définition à travers le
monde via notre propre site web mais aussi
via notre chaîne YouTube, les sites web
de tiers et même des chaînes télé.
The AB is much more than a concert hall.
We have a nose for new talent. Genres that
don’t yet have a name already get a chance
here. We also think further than the venue:
by investing in new technologies, we present
music outside of AB. In 2013 we installed
new cameras with which we can now also
broadcast our concerts to the world in high
definition, via our own website, our YouTube
channel, third-party websites and even TV
stations.

infosessies, … de rode draad van alles
wat we doen in de AB is en blijft muziek.
Kijken we maar naar de inhuldiging van
de photowall van AB Huisfotografe Tina
Herbots. Een sprankelende selectie van
haar foto’s zijn een jaar lang permanent
te bewonderen in de agora.
LA MUSIQUE COMME POINT DE DEPART
Qu’il s’agisse de conférences, d’expositions,
de projections de DVD, de sessions d’écoute
ou d’info, le fil conducteur de toutes nos
activités à l’AB reste la musique. Il suffit
de regarder l’installation du mur photo de
notre photographe attitrée Tina Herbots.
Une brillante sélection de ses photos est
visible dans l’agora pendant un an.

the common theme in everything we do in
the AB is, and will always be, music. Just see

In 2012 stonden we op de 3e plaats in de
Pollstar-ranking, de lijst van meest bezochte
concertzalen ter wereld. En daar stonden we
in 2013 nog altijd.
En 2012, nous figurions à la 3e place du
classement Pollstar qui répertorie les salles
de concert les plus visitées au monde. Une
place que nous avons maintenue en 2013.

– the list of most visited concert halls in the
world. And in 2013 we were still there.

AB GOES AT
Expo ’58 is allang voorbij en Radio2 heeft
er de deuren van haar studio’s definitief
dichtgetrokken, maar de AB heeft nog
grootse plannen voor het Amerikaans
Theater (AT). Het is onze droom om er
een cultuurtempel van te maken waar alle
podiumkunsten samenkomen en waar jonge
artiesten een eigen plek krijgen om te
groeien. In 2013 organiseerden we er een
weekend lang concerten en intussen staat
ook het businessplan op punt.
AB GOES AT
L’Expo 58 fait depuis longtemps partie du
passé et Radio2 a définitivement fermé les
portes de ses studios mais l’AB a encore
de magnifiques projets pour le Théâtre
américain (AT – American Theater). Nous
rêvons d’en faire un temple de la culture où
convergent l’ensemble des arts de la scène
et où de jeunes artistes peuvent trouver un
endroit pour grandir. En 2013, nous y avons
organisé tout un week-end de concerts et le
business plan est désormais finalisé.

AB GOES AT
Expo ’58 is long over and Radio2 has
permanently closed the doors of its studios
there, but the AB still has big plans for
the American Theatre (AT). It is our dream
to make of it a culture temple where all
performing arts can congregate and where
young artists receive an own place to grow.
In 2013 we organised concerts there for a
weekend, and the business plan has also
been drawn up in the meantime.

De AB heeft een boon voor beginnende
groepen. Sommige zijn bijzonder en hebben
het in zich om groot te worden. Die artiesten
geven wij een flinke duw in de rug. We
bieden hen studiotijd, geven repetitieruimte,
organiseren een professionele photoshoot of
–evident! - ze mogen optreden in de AB.
Zo wordt de AB voor hen een tweede thuis.
In 2013 waren Delvis, Spookhuisje en Jan
Swerts onze Artists in Residence (AIR).
L’AB a un faible pour les groupes qui
débutent. Certains ont quelque chose de
particulier et l’étoffe pour devenir grands.
Nous leur donnons alors un solide coup de
pouce en leur offrant du temps en studio, un
espace de répétition, en organisant un photo
shoot professionnel ou en leur donnant –
évidemment – l’occasion de se produire
à l’AB. L’AB devient ainsi leur deuxième
maison. En 2013, nos Artists in Residence
(AIR) étaient Delvis, Spookhuisje et Jan
Swerts.
The AB has a thing for groups who are just
starting out. Some of them are exceptional
and have the potential to do great things.
We give those artists a big boost. We offer
them studio time, provide rehearsal space,
organise a professional photo shoot or
–obviously! – they may perform in the AB.
That way AB becomes a second home to
them. Delvis, Spookhuisje and Jan Swerts
were our Artists in Residence (AIR) in 2013.
Dat het AIR-programma voor artiesten jaren
later de moeite loont, bewijzen The Bony
King of Nowhere (AIR 2007) en Sarah Ferri
(AIR 2011). Zij speelden in 2013 beiden
in onze grote zaal voor een enthousiast
publiek.

devant un parterre enthousiaste en 2013,

Voor educatieve sessies beschikt de AB
over een gedroomde locatie: Huis 23,
onze huiskamer met een capaciteit van
55 bezoekers. Professor Martin E. Veal van
Yale hield er een gesmaakte lezing over dub.
Labelbaas Ian Nagoski lichtte het belang
van 78-toerenplaten toe onder de noemer
“The Widow’s Joy: Pride, Genius, Grief &
Lies from International 78rpm Recordings”.
In totaal organiseerden we maar liefst
70 gratis activiteiten in Huis 23, als muzikaal
aperitief bij het concert van die avond.

Avec le Huis23, notre « salon » d’une capacité de 55 places, l’AB dispose d’un local de
rêve pour proposer des sessions éducatives.
Le Professeur Martin E. Veal de Yale y a tenu
une conférence très appréciée sur le dub. Le
gérant de label Ian Nagoski y a expliqué l’importance des disques 78 tours sous l’intitulé
« The Widow’s Joy: Pride, Genius, Grief & Lies
from International 78rpm Recordings ». Au
total, nous avons organisé pas moins de
70 activités gratuites au Huis 23 en prémices
de concerts donnés en soirée.
AB has an ideal location for educational
sessions at its disposal: Huis 23, our living
room with a capacity of 55 guests. Professor
Martin E. Veal from Yale held a much
savoured reading on dub there. Label boss
Ian Nagoski expounded upon the importance
of 78 rpm records under the title “The
Widow’s Joy: Pride, Genius, Grief & Lies from
International 78rpm Recordings”. In total, we

Huis 23, as musical appetizer for the concert

Eén keer per jaar strekt de AB de benen
tot in het Warandepark voor Feeërieën
en Boterhammen in het Park, onze gratis
“outdoor” festivals. In 2013 vierden we de
10e verjaardag van de Feeërieën: 12.500
bezoekers cocoonden een week lang ’s
avonds in het park tijdens één van de
mooiste karakterfestivals van het land, in
hartje Brussel.
Une fois l’an, l’AB installe ses quartiers
dans le Parc royal pour les Feeërieën et
les Boterhammen in het Park, nos festivals
« outdoor » gratuits. En 2013, nous avons
fêté les 10 ans des Feeërieën. 12.500
visiteurs sont venus se cocooner en soirée,
une semaine durant et en plein cœur de
Bruxelles, à l’occasion d’un des plus beaux
festivals de caractère du pays.
Once a year, the AB stretches its legs as
far as the Warande Park, for Feeërieën
and Boterhammen in het Park – our free
“outdoor” festivals. In 2013 we celebrated
the 10th anniversary of the Feeërieën: 12.500
visitors cocooned in the park for a week,
in the evenings, during one of the most
beautiful ‘character’ festivals in the country,
in the heart of Brussels.
Regelmatig springen we uit de band en
stampen we een eigenzinnig artistiek project
uit de grond. In 2013 gingen we in zee met
choreograaf Wim Vandekeybus. Zijn “What
The Body Does Not Remember” ging hier
eind jaren ’80 in première. En we vierden
ook het 45-jarige bestaan van dub, de
instrumentale versie van reggae, onder de
titel “Dub Be Good To Me”.
Nous faisons régulièrement des écarts
en créant de toutes pièces des projets
artistiques singuliers. En 2013, nous
avons collaboré avec le chorégraphe Wim
Vandekeybus pour le projet « Fear Not ».
À la fin des années 80, nous avions déjà
accueilli la première de son spectacle « What
The Body Does Not Remember ». Nous avons
également fêté les 45 ans de la naissance
du dub, la version instrumentale du reggae,
sous l’intitulé « Dub Be Good To Me ».
We regularly go wild and put together
an idiosyncratic artistic project. In 2013
we got together with choreographer Wim
Vandekeybus – his “What The Body Does
Not Remember” went into premiere here
in the late ’80s. We also celebrated the
45th anniversary of dub – the instrumental
version of reggae – under the title “Dub
Be Good To Me”.

AB MAKES TV
Thuisblijvers hebben niet altijd ongelijk.
Want als een concert is uitverkocht, kunnen
ze er toch nog bij zijn via ABtv. Dat is niet
nieuw. Wel nieuw in 2013 was Antenne
Belgique, een reeks over het leven voor
en achter de schermen van de AB. Samen
met ACHT blikten we 8 afleveringen in.
In totaal volgden 1,2 miljoen kijkers onze
avonturen op tv.
Ceux qui restent à la maison n’ont pas
toujours tort car lorsqu’un concert est
complet, ils peuvent tout de même y assister
grâce à ABtv. Mais ce n’est pas nouveau.
Ce qui l’a été par contre en 2013, c’est
Antenne Belgique, une série télé sur la vie
et les coulisses de l’AB. Nous avons bouclé

kennis met “Deleting Borders” van Amatorski

“Steenstraat-Muziekstraat” traden er tijdens

AVEC LE QUARTIER
Nous accordons une grande importance à
l’entretien de bonnes relations de voisinage
sur le plan musical. Dans le cadre de « Rue
des Pierres – Rue de la Musique », 10 jeunes
artistes se sont produits lors du Dimanche
sans voiture dans les galeries, les cafés, les
magasins de vêtements et les salons
de particuliers avoisinants.

De AB trekt de kaart van duurzaam vervoer.
Het aantal bezoekers dat met de auto komt,
is de laatste vijf jaar gedaald van 71% naar
60%. Dankzij de sensibiliseringscampagnes
en het EventPass systeem van de MIVB
kiezen steeds meer concertgangers voor
het openbaar vervoer. In het stadscentrum
verplaatst men zich het vlotst per fiets.
Plooifietsen kunnen veilig worden
achtergelaten in ons gebouw. Op die manier
bouwt de AB mee aan verkeersarme pleinen
en lanen in het centrum van Brussel.

cours des 5 dernières années, le nombre
de spectateurs se déplaçant en voiture
est passé de 71% à 60%. Grâce à diverses
campagnes de sensibilisation et au système
de l’EventPass mis en place par la STIB,
de plus en plus de spectateurs optent
pour les transports en commun. Dans le
centre-ville, les déplacements à vélo sont
les plus rapides. Les vélos pliables peuvent
être laissés en toute sécurité dans notre
bâtiment. De cette manière, l’AB contribue
à réduire la pression automobile sur les
boulevards et artères du centre de Bruxelles.
AB is committed to sustainable transportation. The number of visitors who come
by car has decreased over the last five years
from 71% to 60%. An increasing number
of concertgoers opts for public transport,
thanks to awareness campaigns and the
MIVB’s EventPass system. The quickest way
to get around in the city centre is by bike.
Folding bikes can be left safe and secure in
our building. In this way, AB is helping to
establish less congested streets and squares
in the centre of Brussels.

De ecologische voetafdruk van de AB is
sinds 2008 verkleind met 33%. Dit is het
resultaat van systematische verbeteringen en
optimalisaties in onze werking, bijvoorbeeld
door de overschakeling op groene stroom.
De AB houdt in haar dagelijks beheer
expliciet rekening met het milieu. Het
Brussels Gewest beloont ons hiervoor met
het Ecolabel.
L’empreinte écologique de l’AB a diminué
de 33% depuis 2008. C’est le résultat
d’améliorations constantes et de l’optimalisation de notre mode de fonctionnement,
comme le passage à l’énergie verte. L’AB
tient explicitement compte de l’environnement dans sa gestion au quotidien. La
Région de Bruxelles-Capitale nous a, pour
cette raison, octroyé l’Ecolabel.
AB’s ecological footprint has been reduced

Sinds 2013 werkt AB Café/Resto zoveel
mogelijk met duurzame voedingsproducten
en biologisch geteelde ingrediënten. We
serveren biologisch brood en biologische
wijnen. De bedreigde vissoort tonijn is
definitief van de kaart geveegd.
Depuis 2013, l’AB Café/Resto travaille au
maximum avec des produits alimentaires
durables et des ingrédients issus de
l’agriculture biologique. Nous servons du
pain et des vins biologiques. Le thon, espèce
menacée, a été définitivement banni de la
carte.
Dagelijks staan er heerlijke vegetarische
gerechten op de kaart en donderdag is
Veggiedag.
On retrouve quotidiennement d’excellents
plats végétariens au menu et le jeudi c’est
Jeudi Veggie.

TO ORGANIC MENU
Since 2013, AB Café/Resto has been
working with sustainable food products
and organically grown ingredients wherever
possible. We serve organic bread and organic
wine. Tuna, as threatened fish species, has
been permanently wiped from the menu.
There are delicious vegetarian dishes on the
menu every day and Thursday is Veggie Day.

Onze bezoekers zamelden bekergeld in
voor de slachtoffers in Syrië (€5.695) en
Haiyan (€5.195). Voor Music For Life en de
daklozenorganisatie CAW Archipel stelden we
uitzonderlijk onze wereldbefaamde backstage
keuken open (€5.000). Tot slot fietste
onze AB Café/Resto wielerploeg maar liefst
€38.267 (!) bij elkaar voor Kom Op Tegen
Kanker.
L’AB a du cœur. Les cautions de gobelets
non réclamées ou versées par les spectateurs
ont permis de récolter 5.695 EUR pour les
