TOMRA SORTING SOLUTIONS

TOMRA SORTING SOLUTIONS - STAND 110
LEADING THE RESOURCE REVOLUTION
Revolution is inevitable. As a planet we are running to the end of our leash. The world population will increase by 30%
over the next 40 years. Seventy million people enter the middle class every year. Global resources are under
unprecedented pressure. Resource productivity must increase to ensure sustainable development. Over the next 40
years, 30% more people will need to be fed with, at best, today’s availability of farmland. Something needs to change.
Rethinking how we obtain, use, reuse and optimize the world’s resources is the right path at the right time. This is how
the next revolution begins. Solutions for resource productivity are the key to tomorrow’s revolution. TOMRA provides
smart solutions for optimizing our resources – sourcing them, using them, stewarding them, reclaiming them, recycling
them and revitalizing them. In Food, we strive to obtain as much of the Yield into Usage, limiting food losses and food
waste, by optimizing the processes and making sure the processors have sorting solutions that serve this philosophy.

Pillars of sustainability
PEOPLE: ODENBERG and BEST are now under the umbrella of TOMRA Sorting Solutions to design and supply
innovative world class sorting, peeling and process analytics solutions for a wide range of applications. Our sorting
machines are not just the most efficient way to sort your produce; they are also a smart way to invest in your business.
Our solutions boost throughput and availability while at the same time increase yield, quality and food safety. From
optimized produce handling to ease of maintenance, we always have the big picture in mind, as well as the smallest
detail, to make sure the worlds precious resources are used in the most efficient way possible.
By implementing our solutions, we also make sure that Food is safe to eat and that even invisible hazardous food
does not end in the consumer food chain. That way, we protect people from diseases or other inconveniences.
PLANET: See also the introduction. We are a company that wants to make profit of course, but we also feel the need
to help the world with the resource revolution. We want to make sure that we limit food waste, that we rethink how we
use our precious world resources. As an example: 925 million people around the world are suffering from hunger.
Considering that as much as 30% of the food grown ends up being wasted, this is an unnecessary tragedy. Our
machines help increase the yield of produce by 5%-10% or as much as 25,000 trucks of potatoes alone every year.
Another example of how we try to be help on building a better environment is, that our optical sorters can analyze up
to 45 tons of product per hour, maximizing yield and recovery while reducing waste, energy, and chemical use.
Some other examples:
1.Our products also truly maximize the yield from all types of produce by directing the food to channels where different
food qualities can be utilized. From tomatoes in the field to tomatoes on the shelf, crushed tomatoes in a can, and
puréed tomatoes in ketchup, our food-sorting solutions make the most of a precious global resource with the least
amount of waste.
2.After completing a comprehensive analysis of the company’s process, we calculated that a peel-loss improvement of
more than 2% was possible if an ODENBERG Steam peeler and Peel scanner was installed. The result? The 2%
target was achieved straight away and after further adjustments the target was exceeded. Our customer realized
savings of €2.63M over five years by partnering with us and investing in our solution. That way, also less good potato
got lost into waste.
3.The Primus Gemini sorter sorts e.g. blueberries. The machine has two rejection zones, the soft, bruised fruit is
rejected in one way and the foreign material is going into the other direction, kept separately. The fruit can then still be
used for different purposes, like e.g. juices. The ‘cleaner’ fruit does not contain soft berries, so there is limited cross
contamination and shelf life is increased. Less products are wasted.
PROFIT: In this point, the advantage lays with our customer, the food processors. By investing in our solutions, our
customers will see their yield increase and also limit the food waste, so contributing to the environment and at the
same time contributing to a higher quality of food in the market.
