Plechtigheid “100 Years Black Watch Corner - The Black Watch in Flanders”
Oude Kortrijkstraat, hoek Doelbos
Op 11 november 1914, dag op dag 100 jaar geleden, speelde het 1st Battalion
van het Black Watch Regiment een cruciale rol bij de redding van de Ieperboog.
Naar aanleiding hiervan organiseert Field Marshal Haig’s Own Pipes & Drums,
i.s.m. de Black Watch Association, de gemeente Zonnebeke en het MMP1917, een
eenvoudige plechtigheid aan het nieuwe monument.

On 11th November, 1914, it will be exactly 100 years ago that the 1st Battalion of the
Black Watch Regiment played a crucial role during the release of the Ypres Salient.
To commemorate this fact, the Field Marshal Haig’s Own Pipes & Drums organizes together with the Black Watch Association, the municipality of Zonnebeke and the
MMP1917 - a ceremony near the new monument.

Passendale plechtigheid [GRATIS]
Canadalaan, Passendale
Op 10 november 1917 maakten Canadese troepen een einde aan de Slag van Passendale door de puinen
van het dorp te veroveren. De Slag van Passendale staat bekend als één van de gruwelijkste slagen
uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Meer dan 500 000 slachtoffers vielen, terwijl de frontlijn slechts enkele
kilometers verschoof.
De tot een klassieker uitgegroeide Passchendaele Ceremony herdenkt het einde van de Slag van
Passendale. De plechtigheid focust niet op het verhaal van winnaars of verliezers, maar wel op het
herdenken van alle slachtoffers, ongeacht hun nationaliteit. Canadese, Belgische en Duitse troepen,
detachementen en prominenten marcheren gezamenlijk in alle sereniteit door het dorp. De ceremonie
start met een ingetogen reflectie bij Crest Farm Canadian Memorial, gevolgd door een fakkeltocht

door de Canadalaan. De optocht volgt het traject van de bloedige laatste honderd meter van de aanval
en eindigt in het dorp Passendale. Na de plechtigheid worden alle deelnemers uitgenodigd op een
openluchtreceptie, die gevolgd wordt door een filmvoorstelling.

1919, Mathilde is 19 jaar. Twee jaar eerder vertrok haar verloofde Manech naar het front aan de Somme.
Net als miljoenen anderen is hij ‘gevallen op het veld van eer’. Het staat zwart op wit op het officiële
overlijdensbericht maar Mathilde weigert het te geloven. Als Manech echt dood was, dan zou zij het wel
weten. Een oud-sergeant houdt vol dat Manech gestorven is in het niemandsland nabij een loopgraaf
met de naam Bingo Crépuscule. Hij kwam om in aanwezigheid van vier andere terdoodveroordeelden
wegens desertie. Mathilde blijft evenwel het tegendeel geloven. De weg ligt bezaaid met hindernissen
maar dat schrikt Mathilde niet af. Niets lijkt onoverkomelijk als je weigert je neer te leggen bij het lot…

Passchendaele ceremony [FREE]
Canadalaan, Passendale
November 10th, 1917 marks the day that Canadian troops ended the Battle of Passchendaele by
capturing the ruins of the village. The Battle of Passchendaele is known as one of the most horrible
battles of WWI: over 500 000 casualties for a gain of only 8 kilometers.
The Passchendaele ceremony commemorates the end of the Battle of Passchendaele. The ceremony
commemorates all the casualties regardless of differences in nationality. Canadian, Belgian and
German detachments march together through the village to commemorate those who preceded them
100 years ago. The ceremony starts with a subdued reflection at the Crest Farm Canadian Memorial
followed by a torch parade through the Canadalaan. The parade follows the path of the last hundred
meters of the attack and ends in Passchendaele. After the ceremony all participants will be invited to
an open air reception with musical entertainment by international bands.

In 1919 Mathilde was still awaiting the return of her fiancé, Manech, who left for the front two years
earlier. She was been told he was killed on the battlefield at the Somme but refused to believe he
was dead. Mathilde launched her own investigation into his fate to prove the official story wrong. She
discovered he was one of five French soldiers condemned to death for trying to escape the horrors of
WWI by self inflicted wounds to their hands. The sentence of death was carried out by making the men
go onto the battlefield with no weapons, no food or water and left to the mercy of the elements and the
enemy. A sergeant who was there told Mathilde he witnessed the deaths of the men, including Manech,
but Mathilde insisted she would know if he was dead. This slim thread of hope, bolstered by true love,
was all she had, but she clings to it tightly in her quest for the truth.
