Inleiding / Introduction
Theo Tegelaers is partner en curator bij TAAK. Vanaf
1987 experimenteerde hij vanuit zijn eigen kunstpraktijk
met het maken van tentoonstellingen samen met andere
kunstenaars. Nadat hij in 1992 de projectruimte BEAM
in Nijmegen had opgericht, legde hij zich volledig toe
op het samenstellen van tentoonstellingen. Van 1994 tot
1998 was hij de eerste aangestelde directeur van W139,
de tentoonstellingsruimte voor hedendaagse kunst in
Amsterdam. Tegelaers werkte als onafhankelijk curator in
binnen- en buitenland en verbleef onder andere een half
jaar in New York als curator bij het ISCP (International
Studio and Curatorial Program). Hij was gedurende vier
jaar verbonden aan het Atelier Rijksbouwmeester als
curator en coördinator van kunstprojecten. Van 2006 tot
2012 was hij senior curator bij SKOR | Stichting Kunst en
Openbare Ruimte. Vanuit SKOR was hij betrokken bij de
kunstprojecten van Maasvlakte 2. Vanaf medio 2012 ging
hij vanuit TAAK hiermee verder.
was the curator for countless exhibitions relating to
modern photography in the Netherlands and abroad. He
is regularly published in Dutch and international media
and has written several books about photography and
visual culture. He was involved with the Image Project
Maasvlakte 2 from a very early stage.
Theo Tegelaers is a partner and curator at TAAK. Since
1987, from his own practice, he has experimented with
creating exhibitions together with other artists. After he
founded the BEAM project space in Nijmegen in 1992, he
devoted himself entirely to putting together exhibitions.
From 1994 to 1998, he was the first appointed director
of W139, an exhibition space for contemporary art in
Amsterdam. Tegelaers worked as an independent curator
in the Netherlands and abroad which included working
in New York for six months as curator of the ISCP
(International Studio and Curatorial Program). For four
years he was associated with the Atelier Rijksbouwmeester
(Chief Architect’s Studio) as curator and coordinator of
art projects. From 2006 to 2012 he was a senior curator
at SKOR | Foundation Art and Public Domain. From his
position at SKOR he was involved with the Maasvlakte
2 art projects. From mid 2012 he continued this role at
TAAK.
Machteld Leij is an art historian and critic. She is
regularly published in H Art, and coordinates that
magazine’s contributions from the Netherlands. Her
reviews also appear in journals such as De Witte Raaf
and Metropolis M and she has contributed to monographs of various artists, including Jean Marc Spaans,
Raquel Maulwurf and Omar Koubâa. Furthermore, she
has been published in Decorum as an editor, as well as
in Kunstbeeld, Mister Motley, de Filmkrant, Tubelight,
KAAT, NRC Handelsblad as well as websites about art in
public places like openbarekunst.nl.
Beeldproject / Image Project
Frits Gierstberg studeerde kunstgeschiedenis en is
kunstcriticus. Sinds 1993 werkte hij als hoofd tentoonstellingen bij het Nederlands Foto Instituut. Daarna,
sinds 2003, werkt hij in diezelfde functie bij het Nederlands
Fotomuseum. Hij organiseerde de afgelopen jaren een
groot aantal internationale tentoonstellingen, symposia, lezingen en debatten over fotografie. Van 1 januari
2006 tot juli 2010 is hij daarnaast werkzaam geweest
als bijzonder hoogleraar Fotografie aan de Erasmus
Universiteit Rotterdam. Gierstberg was curator voor talloze tentoonstellingen op het gebied van hedendaagse
fotografie in binnen- en buitenland. Hij publiceert regelmatig in nationale en internationale media en schreef
verschillende boeken over fotografie en beeldcultuur.
Hij is sinds de beginfase betrokken bij het Beeldproject
Maasvlakte 2.
Frits Gierstberg studied art history and is an art
critic. From 1993 to 2003 he worked as the head of
exhibitions at the Nederlands Foto Instituut. He now
fulfils the same role at the Nederlands Fotomuseum. In
recent years, he has organised a great number of international exhibitions, symposia, lectures and debates
about photography. From 1 January 2006 until July 2010
he also worked as a photography professor by special
appointment at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Gierstberg
Portscapes
Machteld Leij is kunsthistoricus en -criticus. Ze publiceert
regelmatig in H Art, en coördineert er de bijdragen
uit Nederland. Recensies verschijnen ook in tijdschriften
als De Witte Raaf en Metropolis M en ze leverde bijdragen aan monografieën van verschillende kunstenaars
onder wie Jean Marc Spaans, Raquel Maulwurf en
Omar Koubâa. Voorts publiceerde ze in Decorum
als redactielid, maar ook in Kunstbeeld, Mr. Motley,
de Filmkrant, Tubelight, KAAT, NRC Handelsblad en
websites over kunst in de ruimte als openbarekunst.nl.
Portscapes 2
Sandra Smets is kunsthistoricus en schrijft over hedendaagse beeldende kunst en kunstgeschiedenis. Daarbij
heeft ze speciale interesse voor de rol van kunst in de
openbare ruimte en in het stedelijk weefsel. Ze heeft
gewerkt bij TENT en bij het Centrum Beeldende Kunst
Rotterdam. Tot 2006 schreef ze een wekelijkse galerierubriek voor het Rotterdams Dagblad en is sindsdien
medewerker beeldende kunst bij het NRC Handelsblad.
Daarnaast werkte ze mee aan publicaties van onder
andere de Erasmus Universiteit, Valiz en Straat van
Sculpturen. Met enige regelmaat schrijft ze voor het AMC
Magazine over nieuwe aanwinsten in de kunstcollectie
van het AMC en voor het Belgische kunstblad H Art. In
2012 won ze de Hans Baaij Essayprijs voor een essay over
MC Helderheid en over de betekenis van burgerparticipatie in het kunstklimaat.
Sandra Smets is an art historian who writes about contemporary visual arts and art history. She is particularly
interested in the role of art in the public domain and
in the urban fabric. She has worked at TENT and at
the Centrum Beeldende Kunst Rotterdam (Centre for
Visual Arts in Rotterdam). Up until 2006 she wrote a
weekly gallery column in the Rotterdams Dagblad and
since then she has worked as visual arts staff for NRC
Handelsblad. She also collaborated on publications
by Erasmus University Rotterdam, Valiz and Street of
Sculptures, among others. She frequently writes for
AMC Magazine about new acquisitions in the AMC
art collection as well as for the Belgian art magazine
H Art. In 2012 she won the Hans Baaij Essayprijs for
an essay about MC Helderheid and the meaning of citizen
participation in the artistic climate.
