How to install new firmware on the ICARUS
Illumina (E653 series)

As a general rule, you should only upgrade the
firmware of your device if there is a new firmware
that corrects a certain issue, or if new functionality
is available. If your device is functioning properly
there is no need for a firmware update. You can
check your firmware’s version via the menu
Settings | About device | Kernel version. This item
contains a date which is the unique identifier of
the firmware.
The Illumina has two methods to upgrade the firmware; you can choose which method you
prefer.
1. Over The Air (THIS FUNCTION IS AVAILABLE AS OF SEPTEMBER 2014)
If you have an available Wi-Fi connection, you can download an upgrade directly from
our servers. In order to minimize data traffic the update only contains incremental data
and can be downloaded relatively quickly.
2. Via an update file to be copied to the e-reader
In this method you download the full software of the device using a computer and copy
this to your e-reader.
To upgrade the firmware via the Over The Air (OTA) method:

Connect your e-reader to a reliable Wi-Fi network
Go to the Settings menu and select About device
Select System update and select Check Update Version
If a firmware update is available it will now be listed and you can confirm the update
The update will now start and the update will include a reboot of the e-reader
After a few minutes the update is complete and the e-reader will restart

To upgrade the firmware by copying a file to the e-reader:
1. Download the firmware upgrade from the ICARUS website. Never install upgrades from
third-party websites, this will render your warranty invalid. You can find the upgrade
here: http://www.icarusreader.com and go to the bottom of the screen (in the footer). Click on
Downloads and choose the ICARUS Illumina E653.
2. The firmware upgrade file is called update.zip
3. Connect the ICARUS Illumina to your computer using the original USB cable supplied
with your e-reader. The e-reader will ask you on the screen if you want to connect.
Confirm this.
4. In your computer’s file explorer, the ICARUS Illumina will become visible as a removable
drive, named ICARUS
5. Copy the file update.zip to the root of the e-reader
6. Disconnect the e-reader from the computer using the ‘safely remove hardware’ functionality of
your computer.
7. After a few seconds, a pop-up message on the e-reader will show that a firmware update is
found and will ask if you want to install. Please confirm
8. The update will now start and the update will include a reboot of the e-reader
9. After a few minutes the update is complete and the e-reader will restart

Als algemene regel, dient u de firmware alleen dan
te upgraden, indien er een probleem is, wat door
deze firmware opgelost wordt, of als de firmware
nieuwe functionaliteiten toevoegt aan uw
apparaat. Indien dit niet het geval is en uw
apparaat correct functioneert, raden wij u aan de
firmware niet te upgraden. U kunt uw huidige
firmware vinden via het menu Instellingen | Over
apparaat | Kernel versie. Dit item bevat een datum
en dat is de eigenschap waarmee U de firmware
identificeert.
De Illumina kent twee methoden om de firmware te upgraden, U kunt zelf kiezen waar U de
voorkeur aan geeft.
1. Over The Air (OTA) – via Wi-Fi (DEZE FUNCTIE IS PER SEPTEMBER 2014 BESCHIKBAAR)
Als U een Wi-Fi verbinding heeft, kunt U direct op de e-reader een upgrade
downloaden. Om dataverkeer te minimaliseren download U niet de volledige software,
maar slechts de wijzigingen..
3. Via een update bestand die naar de e-reader gekopieerd dient te worden
Bij deze method download U de volledige software voor de e-reader via een computer.
Deze dient U vervolgens naar de e-reader te kopiëren.
De firmware upgraden via de Over The Air (OTA) method (via Wi-Fi):
7. Verbind uw e-reader met een betrouwbaar Wi-Fi netwerk
8. Ga naar het menu Instellingen en selecteer Over apparaat/over e-reader
9. Selecteer Systeem update en selecteer Check Update Version
10. Als een firmware update beschikbaar is, wordt deze weergegeven en kan deze
geselecteerd worden. Bevestig om de update te starten.

11. De update start nu en bevat o.a. een reboot van de e-reader
12. Na een paar minute is de update compleet en de e-reader zal opnieuw opstarten.
De firmware upgraden via een upgrade-bestand:
1. Download de firmware upgrade van de ICARUS website. Installeer nooit firmware van
derde partijen of andere lokaties als de ICARUS website. Indien u dit doet vervalt de
garantie. U kunt onze officiële updates hier vinden:
http://www.icarusreader.com/ ga naar de footer onderaan de pagina en klik hier op
Downloads. Selecteer de ICARUS Illumina (E653).
2. Het bestand heeft de naam update.zip
3. Verbind de ICARUS Illumina met uw computer met de originele USB kabel die bij uw ereader geleverd is. De e-reader zal u vragen of u wilt verbinden. Bevestig dit door OK te
selecteren
4. De ICARUS Illumina zal in de bestandsverkenner van uw computer zichtbaar worden al
seen verwisselbare harde schijf met de naam ICARUS.
5. Kopieer het bestand update.zip naar de root van de e-reader
6. Verbreek de verbinding via de ‘hardware veilig verwijderen’ functie van uw computer
7. Schakel de e-reader uit
8. Na een paar seconden zal een pop-up venster verschijnen met de boodschap dat de ereader een upgrade gevonden heeft. De e-reader vraagt of u deze wilt installeren.
Bevestig dit.
9. De update start nu en duurt enkele minuten
10. De e-reader zal automatisch herstarten en is klaar voor gebruik.
