Image analysis
Now we will go back to the first
picture and discuss what your group
believes was being communicated by
each couple.
 How can we come to the conclusions
that we do simply based on a
photograph?

Fake Smiles
As a class we will complete an online
activity trying to better understand
genuine and fake facial expressions
 Brainstorm with your groups for each
video clip whether or not you think
the smile is real of fake. (The
answers will be at the end)

Mehrabian’s Rule



Brainstorm- What are
the necessary elements
to communication?
Discuss
Face to Face
communication
regarding feeling and
attitude:
• Words (Verbal)
• Tone of Voice (Vocal)
• Body Language (Visual)




Brainstorm- How much
do each of the elements
account for the meaning
of a message?
Results
• Words 7%
• Tone of Voice 38%
• Body Language 55%
Therefore, effective
communication can
result in the congruency
of these three elements
“Incongruence” can look
like:
• Verbal: "I do not have a
problem with you!"
• Non-Verbal: person avoids
eye-contact, looks anxious,
has a closed body
language, etc.
