The Military Archdiocese collection provides for Catholic chaplains throughout the world for American servicemen and servicewomen. The Home Missions collection subsidizes the evangelization and formation activities of mission dioceses The Black and Native American collection strengthens evangelization and outreach programs which would otherwise be in danger of disappearing among the Black, American Indian, Eskimos, and Aleut communities of the United States. Cristoforo (81) Fourth Sunday of Easter Reflection on the Gospel By Fr. Mark Escobar, C.S. World Day of Prayer for Vocations “I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them” It is true that the expansion now of media distribution through internet, cable, satellite and mobile phone has put a broader array of all sorts than ever before. Informing and educating people across cultures provide us with the importance of creating a new emphasis; a perspective in our multicultural society. I still remember in one of the homilies of Bishop di Marzio of Brooklyn when he said to the newly ordained priest that “he was given a mission to be a shepherd.” He continued further that “this Peter” can say about the Lord and he knows Him.” And he said to him: “You have received joy . . . let the holiness of your life be a delightful fragrance.” In keeping with the theme of this Sunday’s World Day of Prayer for Vocations, it is just the right time to reflect on Jesus as the Good Shepherd and ourselves as his flock. This is God’s calling in his prophetic voice which is also the vision for us to shine a light on many voices that compete with our preferential option as a church. In the same vein, we find different images in the gospel such as the sheep gate, the shepherd, the shepherd’s voice, sheep and the gatekeeper. Their meanings draw us to see in deeper reality where we should direct our steps as we listen to the voice of Jesus who guides us in our way. Jesus, the good shepherd, knows his sheep well, his followers. Pope Benedict wrote his encyclical SPE Salvi with a very good reflection about the image of the Good Shepherd. He made use of Ps 23, the most renowned and beloved psalm in the Bible, as his source of reflection. He says, “In the representation or in the image of the Good Shepherd, the Church could identify with existing models in the Roman art. The Shepherd was generally an expression of a dream for a tranquil and simple life. A number of times did Jesus refer to himself as a shepherd. He said, “My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they know me” (Jn 10:27). When he gave Peter the task to lead his Church, he again used shepherd imagery. He asked him, “Peter, do you love me? Feed my lambs . . . Tend my sheep . . . Feed my sheep” (Jhn 21:15-17).
