A Word from the Pastor …
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today we celebrate another great feast in the life of the Church – the Solemnity of Pentecost. The Church, born
from the pierced side of Christ on the cross, was made manifest to the world on this day. Some like to call today
“the birthday of the Church,” and probably rightfully so.
Two thousand years after the first Pentecost, we can conclude that Jesus was true to His promise when He said to
His disciples, “I will be with you always, even to the end of the age” (Mt 28, 20). In spite of the many sufferings
and persecutions – both from within and from without - that the Church has to go through, She continues to grow
and extend her merciful embrace to all of humanity, both far or near. One cannot but be amazed at how the Lord is
able to work in the Church through weak human instruments.
This day has also been called “the Feast of the Holy Spirit,” who descended so powerfully on the apostles and first
disciples at Pentecost, transforming them from fearful human beings into valiant men who boldly witnessed to the
Truth revealed to them by the same Holy Spirit.
This same Holy Spirit will powerfully descend on a number of parishioners who will receive the Sacrament of
Confirmation today at the 10AM Mass. They are: Carlos Arce, Hector Anapan, Maria Caceres, Hector A.
Chiliquinga, Michael DeGuzman , Valentina Garrido, Mario Hernandez, Joseph Nagy Ibrahim, Stephanie Ramos,
Elpedio Silverio Rojas, Jerome Sanon and Troy J. Swimmer. Four other adult parishioners received their confirmation last Sunday at the 1PM Spanish Mass: Carmen and Juana Rivera, Alicia Meza and Lorgia Aguirre.
Meanwhile, sixty-eight young people from our parish will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation this coming
Friday (29th) at the hands of Archbishop Bernand A. Hebda, who will be paying his first “official” visit to our parish. We heartily welcome Archbishop Hebda, and congratulate our youth who will be completing their Sacraments of Initation on Friday. One of the duties incumbent on those who receive the Sacrament of Confirmation is
to defend the Catholic Faith. It is not only bishops and priests who are called to such a duty, but all of those called
to an adult Faith. May these brothers and sisters experience the sense of belonging at our parish that will lead them
to be able to testify to the Truth, and not to be afraid to be different in a world that is becoming more and more intolerant of Christians.
May – the month of the Blessed Mother - is also a month when many of our parish priests, especially those ordained for the Archdiocese of Newark, celebrate the anniversary of their priesthood ordination. Today (May 24th),
our own Fr. Wojciech Jaskowiak and Fr. Jim Moran will be celebrating their 12th anniversary of their priestly ordination. Fr. Giovanni Rizzo will be ordained 15 years this Wednesday (27th), while yours truly will (only by the
Grace of God), be a priest for 16 years as of Friday (29th). How can we not give thanks to God for the way He always provides for His Church to be able to nourish her children with the Word and the Sacraments, which these
priests are only happy to administer to the Lord’s flock?
There is another reason for us to be thankful this weekend. While some simply think of Memorial Weekend as a
long weekend or the gateway to summer, we are meant to remember the ultimate sacrifice performed by those who
gave their lives in military service. Think of visiting a cemetery this weekend, and stop by the grave of serviceman
or woman and say a prayer for their soul. Plan also at joining us for the Memorial Day Mass tomorrow at 9AM.
A blessed Pentecost Sunday to all,
Fr. Ivan Sciberras

- PRAY FOR PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS!
“I am giving you a mission: pray to the two new saints for peace in your
land, so that there may be an end to this interminable war, and to bring
peace among peoples,” said Pope Francis on Sunday as he received in
audience the Carmelite Sisters of Bethlehem and the Middle East and
the Sisters of the Rosary, in Rome to attend the canonization of Mary of
Jesus Crucified and Marie-Alphonsine Danil Ghattas.
“Pray too for Christians who are persecuted, driven away from their
homes and their land, and victims of 'white-gloved' persecution, hidden
but present: white-gloved persecution and terrorism. Keep praying for
peace.”
Newly-canonized Palestinian saints, Marie-Alphonsine Danil
Ghattas (1843-1927), left, and Mary of Jesus Crucified, OCD
(1846-1878).
The other two saints canonized Sunday May 17 by Pope Francis are Jeanne-Emilie de Villeneuve (1811- 1854), and Maria
Cristina of the Immaculate Conception (1856-1906)
POPE FRANCIS TO PARENTS –
YOU ARE THE FIRST EDUCATORS OF YOUR CHILDREN!
The education of children as the natural vocation of the family was the theme of Pope Francis' catechesis during this
Wednesday's General Audience in St. Peter's Square. The Holy Father began by citing the words of St. Paul to the Colossians:
“Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.” He emphasized the duty of parents to accompany their children step by step, without demanding the impossible, so as
not to overwhelm them. He then went on to speak of the difficulties faced by mothers and fathers who often only have the opportunity to see their children in the evening when they return home tired after work, and also referred to the even more critical situation faced by separated parents, inviting them to ensure that the conflicts between the couple do not have an impact on the children.
Francis also mentioned that the family has been accused of other things, including authoritarianism, favouritism, conformism, and
emotional repression that generates conflicts. “In fact, a fracture has opened up between family and society, undermining mutual
trust, and in this way, the alliance between family and society in the education of children has entered into a crisis.”
“There are many symptoms,” he continued. “For example, in schools this has affected relationships between parents and
teachers. … On the other hand, there has been a proliferation of so-called 'experts' who occupy the role of parents even in the most
intimate aspects of education … and parents are expected only to listen, to learn and to adapt. Deprived of their role, they often become excessively apprehensive and possessive with regard to their children, to the point of never correcting them. They tend to increasingly entrust them to 'experts,' even in relation to the most delicate and personal aspects of their life, placing themselves in the
corner. In this way, parents run the risk of excluding themselves from the life of their children.”
“How have we arrived at this point? Without doubt in the past, parents, or rather, certain educational models, had certain
limits. But it is also true that there are mistakes that only parents are authorised to make, as they are able to compensate for them in
a way that is impossible for any other person. On the other hand, as we well know, life now spares us little time for speaking, reflection and exchange. Many parents are 'kidnapped' by their work and other worries, and they find themselves paralysed by the fear of
making mistakes. The problem, however, is not only about talking. … Let us ask ourselves instead: do we seek to understand
'where' our children truly are on their path? Where is their soul? … And above all, do we want to know?”.
Francis underlined that the Christian communities are called upon to offer support to the educational mission of the family.
“At the base of everything there is love, that which God gives to us, that “is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it
is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things,
hopes all things, endures all things.” Even in the best of families, there is much to be endured, and it takes a lot of patience. Jesus
Himself experienced education in the family.”
“Even in this case, the grace of Christ's love fulfils what is inscribed in human nature. How many excellent examples we
have of Christian parents full of human wisdom! They show that good family education is the backbone of humanism. Its spread
through society is the resource that allows us to compensate for the shortcomings, the wounds, the lack of paternity and maternity
that affect the least fortunate children, and works true miracles.”
“I hope that the Lord may give Christian families the faith, freedom and courage necessary for their missions. If family
education rediscovers the pride of its central role, many things will change for the better, for uncertain parents and disappointed
children. It is time for fathers and mothers to return from their exile, and to fully resume their role as educators,” concluded Francis.

Saint Peter School
forming the future with
Purpose, Passion and Power!
From the Principal’s Desk
The month of May has been filled with so
many activities at St. Peter’s School.
The Spring Concert was held on May 6. The
school gym was filled with the beautiful voices of our
school children as they celebrated the music of many
cultures. Many thanks to Mr. Gehman, our music
teacher, and to our students who gave a wonderful
performance.
Field Day was an exciting and joyful event.
The students participated in a variety of contests. The
highlight of the day was the Tug of War. If one looked
closely, one could see the presence of two contestants
who looked a great deal like Father Ivan and Father
Wojciech! A special Thank You to Mr. Laudati for organizing the day.
Our Pasta Dinner was a great success. Congratulations to the Reinoso Family, from St. Peter’s
School, winners of the 50-50 raffle. It was a night of
good food and good fun. Thank you to all who supported this fundraiser- students, parents, faculty and
their families, members of the parish community and
our friends from St. Joseph’s Regional High School.
The Eighth Grade Dinner Dance was held this
past Thursday. It was a special celebration for the
eighth graders and their parents. The students are
now approaching their graduation on June 5th.
During this week, our History Club, under the
guidance of Mr. Brett Sagarese, gave special presentations about those who have served the United States
in the Armed Forces. On Memorial Day we remember and pray for all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
“Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in
the service of our country can never be repaid. They
have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.” President Harry S. Truman
