Third Sunday of Easter
SAVE THE DATE!
Saturday, August 15th St. Mary will celebrate our 150th Birthday Party!!
Dear members of St. Mary,
It is a central tenet of our faith that Jesus became incarnate in human
history (carne = flesh). This is a tough one. How could Jesus be fully divine, and
at the same time be 100% immersed in that every day routine of eating, sleeping,
working, and decision making—with limited energy and knowledge—that is our
human experience? Or, even more mysteriously, how is the resurrected Lord still
incarnate? In today’s Gospel the risen Jesus enjoys a fish sandwich, precisely for
the benefit of those disciples who will proclaim him alive.
Because we don’t know how the human and divine touch, the temptation
is to settle for a less than authentic Christ. While we proclaim the Incarnation to
be true in theory, in practice Christ is often (only) a spirit, an idea, a thought. He
is entirely lacking in human substance. If this describes your risen Lord, then I
challenge you to incarnate your faith. Make it more than an idea. We incarnate
our faith whenever we apply our faith in decisions that have real, flesh and blood
consequences. And I challenge you to do that in a very specific, concrete way:
financial discipleship.
Financial discipleship is worship by another name. It recognizes that
100% of our resources come from God and are to be used for God’s purposes.
This means that the very first, practical decision about how to spend my money is
this: What amount am I going to put in the Offertory collection every week?
There is no obligatory percentage. But I challenge every single St. Mary wage
earner to give at least one hour’s salary. That’s 1/40 of your weekly income. Any
other money decisions will be about the remaining 39/40.
Pray about it. Discuss it with your spouse. If you have not taken financial
discipleship seriously up until now, this will be a genuine sacrifice. Make the
decision about the amount, and then make the commitment to God. Every
Monday the money should be placed in an envelope and left in a visible place in
the house as a reminder of your priorities. Then, on Saturday or Sunday, place the
envelope in the Offertory collection as an act of worship. Many parishioners
arrange for automatic payment so that the giving happens every week, even if for
any reason they are not here. These folks place an empty envelope in the basket
as a symbolic participation in the Offertory.
The divine Risen Lord we worship is still human! We touch him and are
touched by him in the most concrete way in our shared life of faith here at St.
Mary. Our worship is not just spiritual but material and financial. Your decision
about the very first thing you do with your money—the Offertory collection—is
sacred. It makes you co-responsible, with God, for the success of the Lord’s
work. Is St. Mary doing the work of the Kingdom? Are people being nurtured?
Are lives being changed? Do you believe in the renewal of St Mary? Then invest!
Thanks be to God for all of you who have already learned the lessons of
financial discipleship and are doing your part. May God bless us all with the
grace to incarnate our faith in difficult decisions that have real consequences.
Only in that way will we come to know the peace and freedom of our risen Lord.

NEXT SUNDAY’S READINGS
Fourth Sunday of Easter
April 26, 2015
Acts of the Apostles 4:8-12
1 John 3:1-2
John 10:11-18

Happy Easter! Many thanks to all who worked so hard to transform our Lent
environment into the explosion of color and joy that says “Happy Easter.” Our
Flower Power Team do a fabulous job. Many of you donated Easter lilies and
other flowers and flowering plants. Their Super Supporters include Patti Filice
and Jan Wallace. Our Team members are: Sheila White, Jo Deaver, Elizabeth
and Lilian Paiva, Lori Parshall and her nieces, Sarah and Michelle. Ramon and Carmen
Ramirez helped hang the banners. Dave Rademacher helped with everything on Holy
Saturday. We had a small army of teen volunteers who did such a fabulous job. Meanwhile,
Jon Sanchez and Pat Allen were rehearsing our altar servers who performed magnificently
that night in this complicated, three-hour Mass. Our bilingual choir drew members from
most of our ten or so choirs, led by Carol Harris. Our ushers, Mass Ministers, and RCIA/
RICA team did a splendid job helping everyone to be in the right place at the right time—in
the dark at the beginning of Mass! Tony Taormino and Craig Morris created and
extinguished our New Fire. Many Thank Yous! I am so grateful to live in such a generous
and caring faith community.

FRIENDSHIP SUNDAY/NAMETAG WEEKEND
This weekend, April 19, is Nametag Weekend/Friendship Sunday. If
you forgot a nametag from home, you can create one here. Then,
join your fellow parishioners in the gym for coffee and donuts.
Donuts and coffee this month are sponsored by Christians in
Commerce who will have information about their retreat and their
organization AND by Learning and Loving Center who will have information about the
good work they do. Many thanks to the people who have signed up to help. 20 more donut
ministers would truly secure this monthly event. Contact Rose to sign up or to learn more.
WHERE SHOULD I TAKE MY DONATIONS?
You’ll find detailed lists of who needs what, when, and where in the flyers at the doors.
Please take your donations to the appropriate agency. Saint Joseph Family Center (SJFC)
is a food and services provider. Bring them your shelf-stable food, bags, and egg cartons.
They are open for donations 9-4 Monday through Friday.
The Compassion Center, 8425 Monterey Rd, has an extensive clothing warehouse. This is
the best place to take clothes, blankets, bedding, kitty litter and snack food.
Learning and Loving Center, 16890 Church Street, #16, Morgan Hill, provides job
training, interview skills, and parenting classes for recent immigrant, poor, limited-English
speaking women. They gladly accept your women’s business wear to help their clients
succeed at their interview and dress for success in their new jobs.
Here at the church, we love to facilitate your support for these worthy groups, but we have
limited storage space and no mechanism for distribution.
INVITATION FROM OUR FRIENDSHIP SUNDAY SPONSOR THIS WEEK

WEEKEND LITURGY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS
1. This week’s Gospel shows the patient, diligent witness of the apostles. Their experience
was not just a “spiritual awakening” or unfolding awareness of Jesus’s message. The
Resurrection was a real event!
2. The disciples could see and touch Jesus, break bread with him and feel the wounds of the
Crucifixion in his flesh.
3. How does our work demonstrate our belief in this radical reality? How can we present a
credible witness to the reality of faith in Jesus Christ?
