During the Centenary Year (2011-2012) celebration of our
absolutely beautiful church, our Parish family came home for
Mass and we remembered one another with the flowers that
adorn the Altar, with the candles that light up the Sanctuary, with
the bread and wine that is offered, and of course in the way par
excellence, we remembered one another in the Priest’s Mass
Intention that is lifted up with the help of all of our other
remembrances! Thank you for coming home and remembering
one another! Thank you for coming home and remembering Him

 FROM THE PASTOR 
“Love one another as I have loved you.” That commandment was issued by Jesus
at the Last Supper on Holy Thursday, shortly after He rose from supper, took off
His outer garments, took a towel, tied it around His waist, poured water into a
basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel around
His waist. (cf. Saint John XIII: 4-5) “If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have
washed your feet” He said,” you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given
you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. (Saint
John XIII: 14-15)
Such fruitful service to people – people who betray us; people who deny us; people who are unfaithful to us – is
not easy to follow. It can only be borne from love, and not our love but God’s love; the love of another! (cf.
I Saint John iv: 10)
More often than not in our lives it is the love of a mother that teaches us
what love is. “Most of us” writes Father George A. Kelly in The Catholic
Family Handbook “know persons who have received the finest educations
which universities can bestow, who yet lead miserable lives because they
have never achieved a capacity to love. On the other hand, we also know of
men and women whose intellectual achievements are below normal but
whose lives are filled with happiness because their mothers showed them
how to love other human beings. It follows that in helping your child to
satisfy his basic emotional needs to love and be loved, you give something as
necessary as food for his full development. So do not be beguiled by
aspirations for a worldly career or by the desire to prove yourself as
intelligent as men or as capable in affairs of the world as they. The father must always remain a public figure.
The mother is the domestic figure par excellence. In teaching your child the meaning of unselfish love you will
achieve a greater good than almost any other accomplishment of which human beings are capable.”
You are the most important person your child will ever know. Your relationship with him will transcend, in depth
of feeling, any other relationship he probably will ever have — even the one with his marriage partner. As noted
above, from you he will learn what true love really is.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR
WOULD YOU HELP "GIVE US A
LIFT"
?
Shortly before Christmas 2014, Our Holy Redeemer's outdoor lift became
inoperable. And while it could be repaired (again) at a cost of a few thousand
dollars, I have decided, after going “up and down” that route a few times
before, that Our Holy Redeemer has spent enough money on repairs and that
it makes more (dollars and) sense to replace it an estimated cost (based on
the figures of three proposals) of $40,000.00. In order to help offset that
cost, the Parish has reached out to (and is waiting to hear from) Nassau
County, the Village of Freeport, and private charitable organizations that
grant funds for services that assist the elderly and disabled. Any assistance
you can provide will literally give us a lift!

NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS
(ABOUT THE FAMILY)
APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION
FAMILIARIS CONSORTIO
OF POPE JOHN PAUL II
TO THE EPISCOPATE
TO THE CLERGY AND TO THE FAITHFUL
OF THE WHOLE CATHOLIC CHURCH
ON THE ROLE OF THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY
IN THE MODERN WORLD
(22 November 1981)
PART THREE
THE ROLE OF THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY
IV - SHARING IN THE LIFE AND MISSION OF THE CHURCH
3. The Christian Family
To Discover the Image of God in Each Brother and Sister
64. Inspired and sustained by the new commandment of love, the Christian family welcomes, respects and
serves every human being, considering each one in his or her dignity as a person and as a child of God.
It should be so especially between husband and wife and within the family, through a daily effort to promote
a truly personal community, initiated and fostered by an inner communion of love. This way of life should
then be extended to the wider circle of the ecclesial community of which the Christian family is a part.
Thanks to love within the family, the Church can and ought to take on a more homelike or family dimension,
developing a more human and fraternal style of relationships.
Love, too, goes beyond our brothers and sisters of the same faith since "everybody is my brother or sister."
In each individual, especially in the poor, the weak, and those who suffer or are unjustly treated, love knows
how to discover the face of Christ, and discover a fellow human being to be loved and served.
In order that the family may serve man in a truly evangelical way, the instructions of the Second Vatican
Council must be carefully put into practice: "That the exercise of such charity may rise above any deficiencies
in fact and even in appearance, certain fundamentals must be observed. Thus, attention is to be paid to the
image of God in which our neighbour has been created, and also to Christ the Lord to Whom is really offered
whatever is given to a needy person."
While building up the Church in love, the Christian family places itself at the service of the human person and
the world, really bringing about the "human advancement" whose substance was given in summary form in
the Synod's Message to families: "Another task for the family is to form persons in love and also to practice
love in all its relationships, so that it does not live closed in on itself, but remains open to the community,
moved by a sense of justice and concern for others, as well as by a consciousness of its responsibility towards
the whole of society."
(To be continued …)

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
In today’s readings we find
one of the most remarkable
phrases from the entire Bible:
“God is love.” (See 1 John 4:710)
This is no mere
theological exclamation from
the part of the writer. Saint
John says: “Whoever is
without love does not know
God, for God is love.” Then he
goes on to say that the way to know if you are a child
of God or not is to find out how much you love others.
“Everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows
God.” Jesus in the Gospel says the same thing: “This is
my commandment: love one another as I love you . . .
You are my friends if you do what I command you.”
(See Saint John 15:9-17). This great Feast Time of the
Church in which we celebrate the Resurrection of
Christ and our own resurrection, is also the time to
take stock of how much we are loved by God, and how
much we love our brothers and sisters. Only then can
we be assured of living the new life, the life of the
children of God, children of the One Who is Love.
Why not try it, especially in this Month of May, which
the Church dedicates to Mary, the first person who
loved Christ and because of that became our mother!
… please call the Rectory if you know anyone in
serious need of prayers. The 25 May 2015 bulletin

As we join together to celebrate all of the wonderful Mothers in our
lives, let’s also take time to remember and pray for all the thousands
of Mothers who worry about how they are going to put food on the
table for their children this week.
More than 35% of the 300,000 people on Long Island who receive
emergency food each year are children under the age of 18.
Please consider supporting the work of the CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL so that we can
continue to care for God’s children and their families through our Parish Outreach programs
and Catholic Charities.
Our hope is that each family will make a gift. We cannot ask
everyone to consider the same size gift, but after prayer and
reflection, each family is invited to make a gift in response to God’s
generosity in their lives.
No gift is too small and all gifts make a difference
in the lives of others!

NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
(516) 379-8660
Our Annual Spring Gala is at Carltun on the Park in East Meadow this coming Friday, 15 May. The theme
is “A New Energy” and our honoree is Mary Jane McCartney, former Trustee of our school and retired Vice
President for Gas Operations at Con Edison. Tickets to the event are $200 a person and available through
our website, www.DeLaSalleSchool.org, or by coming to the school office during the week between 7:30 AM and 4:00 PM.
A cash raffle will be held at the Gala and tickets for that are $100 each or seven for $500. You do not have to be present to
win. First prize is $5,000, second is $2,500, and third is $1,000. Only 500 tickets will be sold. You can purchase one at the
school or by sending your donation to us at 87 Pine Street, Freeport, NY 11520. Proceeds from the Gala and the raffle
build our scholarship fund. Thanks for investing in our students!
Our students appreciate the supplementary activities associated with their education such as the trip our eighth graders
took on the LIRR recently to visit the Museum of Jewish Heritage in lower Manhattan. This interdisciplinary activity
integrated their English class work where they are reading The Diary of Ann Frank, their Social Studies class work where
the topic is World War II, and their Religion class work addressing a Gospel response to the evils of bigotry, oppression,
violence, and discrimination. The students’ learning at the museum was accentuated by their visit to the nearby Ground
Zero Memorial. Each student was enriched by his experience in lower Manhattan that day.

FAITH AND MUSIC
Notes from our Music Director, Michael Crouse
How about another exciting Concert Series on the Mile?!
Last summer Our Holy Redeemer sponsored our first concert series
at 175 Woodcleft Avenue, also home of our weekly "Mass on the
Waterfront". Under the direction of Michael Crouse, we provided
six evenings of wonderful and varied entertainment, culminating
with a sacred and Americana program given by members of our
choir. We had such artists as These Three Tenors, Andy Cooney,
The Belles of Broadway and more. Many in attendance have been
asking if we are going to do it again...and the answer is...with your
help...YES!
We are asking for both your input and your donations to raise enough funds to support this summer's
series. At the end of this page there are a few questions that will help us to plan the best evenings for
these programs, so that as many of you as possible may attend.
We also plan to create a decorative plaque with the names of each person, business, or family who donates
$100.00 dollars (or more) towards the funding of the series, which will be permanently displayed at
175 Woodcleft Avenue.
We hope many more will take advantage of these wonderful evenings of music, and we need your help in
spreading the word!
It would be of great assistance if you would take the time to answer the following questions, and then
return the questionnaire to the rectory by _________________________:
1. Were you able to attend any of the concerts last summer?
If yes, how many? _________ Did you find it an enjoyable evening?

Yo
les he dado ejemplo, y ustedes deben hacer como he hecho yo.” (vea San Juan
XIII:14-15)

THIS IS MY COMMANDMENT
Saint John XV: 12
Jesus said to His disciples, “As the Father loves Me, so I also love you. Remain in My love. If you
keep My commandments, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and
remain in His love. I have told you this so that My joy may be in you and your joy might be complete.
This is My commandment: love one another as I love you.”
Saint John XV: 9-11
