Curcumin (a herbal compound extracted from Curcuma longa L.) was embedded in an acid-catalyzed silica xerogel coating on cotton textiles. The release of curcumin was found to be diffusion-controlled, as expressed by the Higuchi and the first-order models. Matrix dissolution release was ruled out by the absence of dissolved silica in the release medium. Results from nitrogen sorption analysis confirmed the presence of mesopores in the xerogel coating, and an increase in both the BET surface area from 1.95 to 2.23 m2 g–1 and in the mesopore volume from 0.003 to 0.004 cm3 g–1 after the sol–gel treatment. Thicker xerogel coatings therefore provided greater porosity for curcumin entrapment, leading to retardation of the diffusion processes and consequently extended release profiles. The treated samples showed better antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus (99% reduction) compared with Escherichia coli (37% reduction). Overall, the developed sol–gel coated textiles demonstrate promising potential for use as wound dressing materials. ver más... Antimicrobial non-woven polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabric containing nano-silver of different concentrations has been prepared in a novel three step process. Nano-silver has been incorporated in between two layers of organosilicon thin film deposited by an atmospheric pressure plasma system. The top layer of 10nm thickness was used as a barrier to prevent release of nanoparticles from the surface. The antimicrobial activity of the nano-silver fabrics was tested using Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli by dilution method. The effect of silver concentration on the lag phase, the specific cell growth rate, and the cell concentration has been studied and discussed based on bacterial growth curves. ver más... Source: Geotextiles and Geomembranes, Volume 43, Issue 1. Author(s): Ennio M. Palmeira , Janaina Tatto. Geotextile filters can be used in several geotechnical and geoenvironmental applications. Regarding the protection of banks or slopes against erosion caused by the action of waves, these materials can be employed under revetments and armour layers. This paper presents results of large scale tests on armoured slopes where geotextile and granular filters were employed. A wave flume was used in the tests and three types of nonwoven geotextiles and a conventional granular layer were employed as filters between the armour layer and the base soil slope. The armoured slope was subjected to the impacts of waves produced by a wave generator opposite to the channel slope. Pore pressures in the soil slope were measured during the tests and soil particles that piped though the filters and that were entrapped in the geotextile were collected for total mass and particle diameter measurements. The results obtained showed that the geotextile and the granular filters presented similar performance. In addition, retention criteria available for this type of geotextile filter application provided very conservative results. The findings highlight the importance of the development of more accurate testing techniques and filter criteria for designing armoured slopes with geotextile filters. ver más... The present work for the first time introduces a new class of textile consisting of mulberry fibers uniformly laden with titania nanorods. This unique naturalsynthetic composite textile is self-cleaning and environmental friendly. The utilized composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and UV-Vis diffused reflectance spectrum (UV-DRS). The SEM images clearly show homogeneous distribution of titania nanorods on the surface of mulberry fibers (MF). XRD and FTIR results confirm the presence of titania in the composite materials. Antimicrobial potential and UV protection due to presence of titania nanorods on MFs was investigated in this study. Results of this investigation indicated that MFs-TiO2 composite exhibit admirable antibacterial activity. From the antimicrobial kinetic test on E. coli, it was established that the composite textile possess improved bactericidal activity than pure mulberry textile. Moreover, titania present on the mulberry fibers impart anti-yellowing, self-cleaning properties, which were endorsed due to the scattering effect of UV radiation by titania nanorods. Thus our study provides the clue/grounds to select mulberry fibers/titania composite as a material of choice for fabrication of promising antimicrobial future textile. ver más... A new, efficient and fast process was developed to coat poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics with acrylic acid (AA) and this novel ecofriendly material was designed to be used as a filtration medium for complexing heavy metals from aqueous media. PET is impregnated with acrylic acid, and directly polymerized using a KrF excimer laser. The conditions of irradiation were optimized using the experimental design technique: a 40×3.5 mm2 surface was irradiated per pulse, and 24mJ/cm2 and 700 pulses were necessary to obtain a good coating without degrading the textile structure. For industrial purpose, these conditions were extended to treat larger surfaces (40×11.5 mm2 pulse) using a fluence of 24mJ/cm2 and 700 pulses. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Xray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) were carried out to characterize the functionalized surfaces. A thick coating, resistant to low-temperaturewashing was obtained. Finally, the efficiency of this coated textile was evaluated with copper sulfate solutions: 0.131mg copper was trapped per cm2 of PET, which is a promising result. ver más... This is the case for example of the transport (automotive, rail and aeronautic), marine, wind energy and construction industries. New developments such as textile preforming combined with liquid moulding technologies together with recent automation developments will support this tendency. Although it seems that composite manufacturing technologies are already mature, actually they are not. ver más... Alfombra muro a muro con calefacción radiante para la eficiencia energética en el calentamiento de espacios en edificios no residenciales Publicada el 22/12/2014 Energy efficiency is using less energy while maintaining an equivalent service. EU set a target for 2020 of saving 20% of primary energy consumption. Nearly 40% of the energy is consumed by buildings. Large efforts are being invested in future low energy buildings, but the reality is that existing buildings represent 99% of the stock. The EPBD recast sets minimum requirements for existing buildings: Member States must set targets for the transformation of existing buildings into near zero energy buildings by 2014 (consuming 40-60 kWh/m2). Thus the current average energy consumption (150 -300 kWh/m2) will need to be reduced by <75%. Few innovative technical systems in the market are directed and optimised for the efficient use of energy in existing buildings. Therefore RADCARPET will be a radiant heating wall-to-wall carpet covering the floor surface of non-residential buildings (offices, hotels and educational buildings) that will work as a space heating system. ver más...
