Fifth Sunday of Lent

March 22, 2015
THE NEW COVENANT
When the prophet Jeremiah coined the term “new
covenant” he was actually doing something quite radical.
For the Jewish people, there was only one covenant, the
one made between the Lord God and Israel through
Moses at Mount Sinai. For Jeremiah to suggest that God
would somehow supersede the covenant with a new one
would have sounded audacious to Jewish ears. But in this
way he is a predecessor of Jesus who, in the Gospel of
John, is continually portrayed as superseding the past,
establishing the reign of God in a new way. And in
today’s Gospel passage, Jesus the “new covenant” speaks
the language of his “new commandment” of love when
he tells of the dying grain of wheat, and of our own need
to die to self in order to be raised with Christ. As Lent
ends and we prepare to enter into Holy Week, the dying
grain of wheat serves as an excellent symbol of the kind
of dying and self sacrifice to which disciples are called,
a symbol of that new covenant written deep within our
hearts.

5:00 For The Parishioners of OLA (Fr. Lewk)
Dear Parishioners,
The last weeks has had some activity that has been very helpful. Mr. Jim Ryan spoke on three
evenings last week about becoming happier people. This happiness comes from letting go of past
hurts and stepping out of our “comfort zones.” Much akin to the early disciples and apostles of Jesus,
we have to take risks to follow Jesus and find our true happiness.
We also had a day of recollection for the Spanish speaking parishioners on this past Saturday.
Since Palm Sunday will begin this coming Saturday evening, I want to remind you that we will
have the blessing of palms outside in the courtyard at the 9/11 Memorial and then proceed around the
corner to the front entrance of church.
This blessing and procession will take place at the 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm vigil masses and at the
10:30 am and 12:00 pm masses on Sunday, March 29.
On Palm Sunday, March 29, we will have the Parish Easter Collection. As you know, the
winter weather reduced our mass attendance and consequently our collections. If you find it possible,
please be as generous as you can in the second collection next Sunday. I am very grateful to those of
you who have brought your envelopes up to date recently. Your loyalty to the parish is deeply
appreciated.
Please remember: Monday, March 30, is Reconciliation Monday. All churches in the
Archdiocese of New York and the Dioceses of Brooklyn and Rockville Centre will have priests
available from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm to celebrate the sacrament.
We are honored to have Bishop DiMarzio with us from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm that day.
Lets try to anticipate some chores this week to keep Holy Week as free from distraction as possible.
Let’s pray for each other
