THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
APRIL 19, 2015
A Word from Our Pastor
Fr. Ron Weissbeck
Third Sunday of Easter
There are many people we admire or revere whom
we will never see in person: athletes, artists, actors, etc.
We enjoy their work and accomplishments and read about
their lives in books and magazines. We sometimes get so
involved in who they are that we almost feel like we know
them. We may be their biggest fans and then share our
love of them with others. We do all of this, yet we have
never even see them in the flesh with our own eyes.
Some think this is the way with Jesus. They
believe He is the Son of God and the Savior of the World,
but He is still someone up in heaven, and we will get a
chance to see Him “for real” when we die or when He
comes again. They may even say that until those times
occur, He resides only in our hearts.
But those in the Gospels saw who He was in the
breaking of the bread. And today, in 2015, He is here in
our midst for all eyes to see. He is here really and truly
every time we break the bread. There is no need for
worship from afar. Just open your eyes.
My dear family in Christ,
The road to Emmaus offers many images for
anyone who wants to get to spend some time with the
Risen Lord. The story begins with two disciples who are
engaged in an intense conversation about all that has just
happened in Jerusalem. They want to let the stranger in to
their experience; they are surprised that he seems to be the
only one in the area who is ignorant of what just occurred.
These disciples were engaged and they had little trouble
sharing their experience of the event.
They have something to teach all of us. When we
are involved, the whole person is participating. This is
such a clear message about the event of the resurrection.
The stranger let them talk; they wanted him to have a part
in this event that took place in Jerusalem.
That story comes alive for us when we take the
time to share it. The Lord connects the past with the
present as He begins with Moses and weaves it into a full
tapestry that becomes visible when He breaks the bread and
their eyes are opened and they recognize Him. We, too,
have to recognize Him in the breaking of the bread because
He is real and historical as He has transformed the world
into the peace that God desired from the beginning.
The resurrection is the reordering of the world in
the peace that only God can give. We have to see it and
touch it if it is to make a difference in the way we live.
Save the Date!

Reflection
By Seth Willden
Friends are so very important. They are the family we
choose. As a friend we need to remember to maintain and
cultivate those relationships. Sometimes that means being
there during difficult times, and sometimes it just means
having fun and spending time together. Let’s remember
our friends in our thoughts and prayers today.
Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Christ
would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day.”
Luke 24:45-46

Good, Bad, Great!
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
On April 2, 2015, I received an official letter from the Archbishop informing me that I will be transferred to
another parish.
The GOOD news is that it doesn’t happen just yet, but in two months, on June 17th. The BAD news, of course, is
that I will be leaving our community of St. John the Baptist in Longmont, at least physically, because my heart will always
remain here and I will remember you in my prayers.
You came to be my family during an important time of my life. Thank you for that.
Now the GREAT news, perhaps even a little overwhelming, is the statement of the Archbishop:
“With this letter, I am pleased to appoint you Pastor of St. William Parish, in Fort Lupton, Colorado, effective June 17,
2015, for a six year period.“
Honestly, I feel very happy and privileged about this appointment, and yes, a bit scared as well. It is big news, but
there are another two months before anything actually changes.
If you would pray for me in this time of transition, I would greatly appreciate it.
Your Brother in Christ Risen,
Fr. Grzegorz

unidos a él” (I Juan 2.5).

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
APRIL 19, 2015
Savoring the Experience
Family Faith Formation 2015
One of the wonderful things about vacations is the time
we spend two or three weeks afterward savoring the
experience, sharing vacation photos and memories with our
family and friends. This kind of reflection puts us back in
touch with the original experience and reminds us of the
relaxation and wonder the vacation afforded us. Today, on
the Third Sunday of Easter, the Church blesses us with
reminders of what we celebrated two Sundays ago. All
three readings are reflections on the meaning of the death
and resurrection of Christ. One of the threads running
through these reflections is that the purpose of the Lord’s
suffering, death, and resurrection was to save us, to forgive
our sins. We are given fifty days to ponder this reality—
fifty days to savor the experience of Christ’s dying and
rising for us.
Date for First Communion: Practice - Wednesday,
May 6th at 6:00 p.m. with Mass at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday,
May 9th. Students are to arrive at 4:30 p.m. and meet
downstairs in Martin Hall to line up. Certificates can be
picked up at the reception in Benedict Hall that will follow
the Mass. Photographs may be taken in the church
after Mass.
Confirmation, RCIC, RCIT students: All birth, baptism,
and sponsor documents should be turned in. Without the
proper documents you will be unable to receive your
sacraments in April or May.
Dates for Confirmation: Practice for Confirmation takes
place Monday, May 4th at 6:00 p.m. Sponsors should be
present. The Confirmation Mass will be celebrated on
Tuesday, May 5th at 6:30 p.m. Students and sponsors
should arrive at 5:30 p.m. to meet with Fr. Dollins prior
to the liturgy.

Why Does God Make Us Suffer?
How do we explain suffering to a child? Can we
understand ourselves why God doesn’t always take away
our suffering or the suffering of innocents? Unfortunately,
there is no easy answer.
God made the world good. The world God created
was perfect. He can’t make something bad. Suffering and
death weren’t in the blueprint. They were fallout from the
sin of our first parents. Misery often comes as a
consequence of sin and selfishness.
Suffering can have a purpose. St. Augustine said
that God “would not allow any evil in his works, unless...he
is able to bring forth good out of evil.” God uses our pain
to take our focus off the world and put it on Him so He can
work in our lives. We may not see the benefit until the
suffering passes.
Jesus understands. Jesus choosing to suffer for us
shows that He understands pain. He showed us that
suffering can have meaning and purpose—and He promised
that we would never endure alone.

Treasures from Our Tradition
The pastoral care of the sick will be misunderstood if we start from the vantage point of the sickroom. Begin with the
Sunday assembly, from which the sick person has been separated by the crisis of illness, and whose absence is given
expression in prayer and service. The goal is to extend the consolation of the Lord’s presence at the table to those who are
apart from it, and for the assembly to enfold them in prayer.
Secondarily, the goal is to teach people what the Church desires for all those who are sick. Seeing ministers dispatched
to the sick from Mass every Sunday might help a caregiver realize that their dear one can also receive Communion.
Witnessing the anointing of a person facing surgery might help another person to overcome hesitation and ask for the
sacrament’s healing and strength. Society’s impulse may be to marginalize the sick, but the tradition of our community is to
see them at the center of our life. When Roman persecutors ordered St. Lawrence the Deacon to hand over the jewels of the
Church, he assembled a motley crew of the sick and the infirm and announced with all humility, “Behold, my lord, the
treasures of the Church of Christ.”
