You will have an opportunity to meet with individual teachers once your student led conference is complete. Our school year is winding down fast and it will be June before you know it. We have a lot to accomplish over the next few months and your help is really important to us. Student led conferences will be coming up right before spring break. We had a fantastic turnout last fall (82%) and we hope to beat that this time around. Your student(s) have been preparing for this in their advisory class. It is amazing to see middle school students in this type of a role; explaining their progress, challenges and successes to someone they care about. The feedback from the students on this process is interesting. While they may not say it, the vast majority really enjoy telling their families what they are doing. It gives them confidence and they love the positive feedback from their family. Our state tests (SBAC) will be in full swing right after spring break. These are new this year and they will be more difficult. While these tests are important to students and to Stephens, they are just one piece of the picture for the success and growth of our students. We just ask that students do the best they can on them and I am confident that they will. Encourage your students to come out for track and to stay involved this spring. Track season starts soon and is available for all grade levels. We have been giving students data and having them track where they are on being college and career ready. One data point that we have added is extra-curricular activities. Are they involved in sports, after school clubs, church youth groups, etc.? Are they involved in music, leadership, Teacher Cadet, AVID? These activities make a difference to the success of our kids. Finally, remember that if your child needs extra help on their academics, we have support for them at Stephens. Email teachers and request that they stay after school or attend 7th period. Review the three week grade reports and Intouch. Check out binders and agendas to see if they are keeping them organized and writing down quizzes and tests. Students are doing a lot here each and every day! Don’t let them tell you otherwise. Ask them what they are learning. Ask them what they are reading. Thanks for helping us finish the year strong. Test time is rapidly approaching. The state has a new test this year to measure students’ knowledge of state standards in these subjects. It’s called the Smarter Balanced test and it replaces the OAKS Test. The Smarter Balanced test measures student progress toward new learning standards that are designed to prepare students for college and career. New standards require a new test. A different test The test-taking experience will be very different for students. For example: • The test is longer, so students need stamina to stick with it all the way to the end. • There’s a lot of writing in both the math and language arts tests. • Because it’s taken on a computer, students will need to know how to type on a keyboard. • There’s only one opportunity to take the test each year, but students have several hours to complete it. It’s important that they take their time and be careful when answering the test questions. • Students who participated a field test of the Smarter Balanced test said it is more interesting than OAKS. Because the test is new and different, we expect it will take students a while to adjust. This means that students who may have done well on the old OAKS test may not do as well on the Smarter Balanced test at first. This is normal when tests change. Students will adjust with time. How to help your student prepare Parents can help their students transition to the Smarter Balanced test by doing a few simple things at home that support the work taking place in the classroom. Our school will be sending home “Parents’ Tips for Testing” in the coming weeks. Here are some ways to help your student be successful on the Smarter Balanced test: • Take practice tests – find a link to tests here: http://www.skgradguide.com/doing/state-tests • Practice typing skills – o For elementary students: http://www.skpselementarytechnology.com o For secondary students: http://www.typingweb.com Keep it in perspective It’s important to encourage your student to relax and give the test their best effort. State tests provide feedback to the State about how our schools are helping students reach state standards, and provide teachers with information on how students are learning. But remember, performance on the state test alone doesn’t reflect a student’s overall growth or achievement level. State tests are important, but they are just one of many data points teachers use to gauge student learning.
