ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI CATHOLIC CHURCH WHITESBORO, TEXAS “I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD” by Fr. Jeremy Myers John 10:11-18 We celebrate “Good Shepherd Sunday” today. The title comes from the gospel that is selected each year on this Fourth Sunday of Easter. It portrays the Lord Jesus as the Good Shepherd. We hear the Lord say the same thing today when he announces, “I am the good shepherd.” Then he defines what he means by “good shepherd.” He says to his followers, “A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” It is a good image for us to consider as we recall the events of Easter. There, we saw that the Lord Jesus willingly laid down his life for us. He not only spoke the words; he lived them. As followers of the Lord Jesus, we have the responsibility to bring the message and the presence of the Risen Lord to people in this day and in this age. A story related by the writer Kate Haas brings this home to us in a clear way. She tells of a recent experience of hers when she had to fly to Washington, D.C. Admitting she is not the best of flyers under the best of circumstances, she tells of an especially challenging flight. She tells how she was hoping for an interesting seatmate and some good conversation on the plane to distract her from her fear of flying. But, as it happened, someone she called “Celebrity Girl” sat next to her on the plane. She was young, wearing a hot pink track suit, with fingernails and toenails to match, and blond hair. Once in her seat, “Celebrity Girl’ rummaged through her tote bag and pulled out pink headphones and a gossip magazine. Kate didn’t want to make any judgments, but she would have preferred someone else to get her through the three hour flight to Washington. About 80 miles from their destination, the plane hit rain and turbulence. The engines make a grinding sound and the plane jolted. Kate let out an involuntary gasp, clutching the arms of her seat. The girl next to her removed her headphones, looked at Kate with concern, and said, “Are you OK?” When Kate admitted she was a little nervous about flying, the girl took her hand and said, “Here, hold on. This doesn’t bother me.” The girl continued talking to Kate. “I’m a firefighter. I’m used to heights. And you should see the way the ladders sway sometimes. Takes getting used to, I’ll tell you that.” She looked directly into Kate’s eyes. “We’re going to be fine. You know that, right?” The girl’s hand felt good and her confidence transferred to Kate. For the next 20 minutes, the girl—now known to Kate as “Firefighter Woman”—kept up a steady stream of conversation about Washington’s old buildings and their fire hazards, about her boyfriend in the Army, and about her pet fish. She talked until the plane landed, never letting go of Kate’s hand. As the wheels touched down, Kate, now calm again, thanked her seatmate. “Thank you so much. My kids will be thrilled to hear that I sat next to a real firefighter.” “You’re welcome,” the girl answered, putting her magazine back in her bag and getting her pink phone out. “Hey, Babe,” she said into the phone. Kate wondered if the guy on the other end knew just how lucky he was. We find here an example of how we all can shepherd one another. When we find someone who is lost or in trouble or in distress, then it is time for us to become the “good shepherd.” Why? Because we say we want to be Christ-like. That means we imitate the “Good Shepherd.” APRIL 26, 2015 FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (B) Jesus is the stone rejected by the builder who has become the cornerstone. As cornerstone, he united Jews and Gentiles in his Church. He is the Good Shepherd who laid down his life for his sheep.
