This year we start with 10 classes (2 classes each in grades 1 to 4, and one class each for grades 5 and 6) and welcome 65 new, energetic 1st graders, totaling in 311 students. To all students: welcome and congratulations on starting a new academic year. My name is Yōji Hatano. I transferred here from Shibaura ES here in Minato, in place of your previous principal Atsuko Shinozaki. I am thinking about how Higashimachi will proceed to the future while still preserving the unique characteristics of its “International Studies” program. Together, with the help of parents, the people of the community, and the faculty and staff, I will do my best for the sake of the children’s happiness. どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。 For the 2015 school year, I hope to use what I call “AAA” (Triple A). The first A is for anzen (safety). Safety must take top priority over everything else. Teachers must conduct their classes and watch over their students with an exceptionally heightened sense of awareness. I hope to teach our students the importance of thinking about safety on their own. The second A is for antei (stability). Each class, even specialty classes, will be managed and conducted with stability. Each student’s educational aptitude will be well observed, and with good judgment and appropriate methods their interests will be stimulated and their learning skills will be sharpened. The third A is for anshin (peace of mind). In daily education, the first A (anzen) and the second A (antei) are conditions that must be accomplished in order to accomplish anshin. Our goal is to make a school where students are guaranteed safety and can enjoy their classes with peace of mind, a school that parents can entrust their children to with peace of mind. However, education is not something that ends with school. With the help and cooperation of parents and our community members, I will unite with the faculty members and focus on this academic year. So, just as before, I appreciate everyone’s cooperation for this academic year.
