No. 4 / April 2015
Dear fellows,
I am very pleased to inform you that our work is making major progress every day in order to realise our
visions and projects.
A couple of days ago I had a fruitful talk with MEP Paul Rübig, with whom I am in constant exchange,
which is essential for our cooperation with the European Parliament.
Just ahead of Easter I met Anselm Kiefer in Salzburg who was suggested as new member by Thaddäus
Ropac. He accepted his nomination and will contribute to our large project “Europe in progress”, which is
increasingly taking concrete shape.
A special pleasure was a visit at the Hochschule in Karlsruhe, where I met Peter Sloterdyk and Peter
Weibel, both members of our Academy. This institution was very impressive for me and I got many
stimuli.
The 6th Danube Academies Conference took place in Ulm from 16th to 17th April and was hosted by
Hans Fecht, member of the Academy and chairman of the Institute of Micro and Nanomaterials at Ulm
University. I was really happy that representatives of almost all Academies of the Danube area were
present, including the president of the Bavarian Academy.

A special highlight of the conference was the session on Eureka. It is fascinating how Germany is
improving industrially which can be seen in the ATX. A specific focus was given by Hennig Zoz on
Nanoparticels with their pluripotent applications. This material is spreading to all areas of research.
Mr. Zoz stated that with solid research you will have a real impact on our planet and you can significantly
reduce pollution. It made me smile when he said, “Stop ‘Green Religion’, foster green sciences”.

I would like to say thank you to Hans Fecht for all his efforts. The 7 th Danube Academies Conference will
take place in Ljubljana in fall 2016, the date will be announced soon.
Last week I met Jean-Claude Juncker in Vienna on occasion of 70 years Forum Alpbach. I informed him
on our project “Europe in progress”, he will receive the final report in 2017.
Today I have a big request: Some members change their address without notifying us. As the postal
service is expensive, please try to provide us with your correct contact details.
The membership directory and the annual report are under preparation. Please check the correct data
and send any changes to Ms. Essl ([email protected]), who is in charge of the membership
department.
It would be fine when you send material, which can be distributed to our members in order to enhance
the network.
Finally, I am happy to announce that we are on Facebook now.
