Die Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU) ist die einzige Volluniversität und das wissenschaft-liche
Zentrum von Schleswig-Holstein. Hier studieren mehr als 25.000 junge Menschen, hier lehren und forschen rund
2.000 Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler. Von den Agrarwissenschaften bis zur Zahnmedizin bildet sie in
derzeit 185 Studiengängen und zirka 80 verschiedenen Fächern aus.
Kiels Lage am Meer begründet die breit ausgebaute und international hervorragend
ausgewiesene Meeresforschung. Der etwa 200-köpfige Exzellenzcluster
»Ozean der
Zukunft« untersucht den Ozean aus mannigfaltigen Perspektiven und in einer weltweit
einmaligen Breite.
Ein
herausragendes
Verbundprojekt
in
diesem
Forschungsschwerpunkt
ist
der
Exzellenzcluster »Entzündung an Grenzflächen«, der an der CAU angesiedelt
ist. Rund 200 Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler wollen chronische Entzündungen,
ausgelöst durch Störungen an Grenzflächen der Körperorgane wie Haut und
Schleimhäuten erforschen.
Die Graduiertenschule »Entwicklung menschlicher Gesellschaften in Landschaften« im
geistes-wissenschaftlichen Schwerpunkt "Societal, Environmental and Cultural Change" bildet exzellenten
wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs in Kooperation mit der Naturwissenschaft und der Medizin aus.
Das Baltische Meer ist in zahlreichen Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften der CAU ein zentrales Thema. Der
Schwerpunkt Nord- und Osteuropa richtet den Kurs fachübergreifend auf die Kulturen im Ostseeraum aus
– auf deren Rechts- und Sozialsysteme, deren Sprache und Geschichte.
"Nanowissenschaften und Oberflächenforschung" auf höchstem Niveau
betreiben die Technische und die Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät. In
diesem Förderschwerpunkt untersuchen Kieler Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler
aus Nanowissenschaft, Materialwissenschaft, Physik, Chemie, Bionik, Elektrotechnik,
Informatik und verschiedenen medizinischen Fächern gemeinsam mit norddeutschen
Partnern, wie allerkleinste Elemente funktionieren und gesteuert werden können.

Kiel University - Keeping on course together
Kiel University is Germany's northernmost state university and the scientific centre of Schleswig-Holstein. At our
institutes, more than 25,000 students learn their trade, about 2,000 scientists teach and do research in one of
our eight faculties. They educate students in 185 degree programs and approximately 80 different areas ranging
from Agricultural Science to Zoology.
Kiel's geographical location by the ocean is the basis for the wide-ranging and
internationally recognized marine research carried out here. The Cluster of
Excellence »The Future Ocean« is the field of work for about 200 scientists. They
analyse manifold aspects of the marine sciences in a unique and unprecedented breadth.
An outstanding collaborative project within this research focus is the Cluster of
Excellence »Inflammation at Interfaces«. As many as 200 scientists want to
deepen their understanding of chronic inflammations triggered by disturbances on the
interfaces of organs such as skin or mucous membranes.
The Graduate School »Human Development in Landscapes« which is part of the social science
research focus "Societal, Environmental and Cultural Change" trains excellent young scientists in collaboration
with the Natural and Medical Sciences.
The Baltic Sea is a topic central to numerous areas in the Arts and Humanities. The scientific focus "Northern
and Eastern Europe" deals in an interdisciplinary manner with cultures of the Baltic Sea area, including
legal and social systems, language and history.
»Nano Science and Surface Research« is carried out at the highest level by
members of both the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of
Engineering. Scientists from Nano Science, Materials Science and Engineering, Physics,
Chemistry, Bionics, Electrical and Information Engineering, Computer Science, and other
medical disciplines are striving to analyse how microscopic elements function and may be
regulated.

Akademischer Kalender / Academic Calender
ECTS Assessment procedure
According to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) students obtain a certain number of credit points for
successfully completed courses. In Kiel these points are called “Leistungspunkte” (LPs) within the Bachelor - /
Master Program. Leistungspunkte correspond to ECTS - Credits in the ratio 1:1.
LPs are awarded according to the workload, which is necessary to complete the course (targets) successfully.
The workload is made up of several efforts, like the preparation and post processing as well as the attendance of
lectures. One LP corresponds to the workload of 30 hours. The completion of the Bachelor degree requires 180
LPs, to achieve the Master degree 120 LPs are necessary. For courses within the Bachelor- / Master Program 4 10 LPs are awarded, depending on the scope of a course. The number of credits per course could be found in the
section Lectures.
Grades
All written tests and seminar papers are marked on the basis of the German grading system. The following table
exhibits the conversion of German marks into ECTS grades.
