Die aktuelle Ausstellung steht im Zeichen der
frühen Gemälde Egon Schieles. Die Werke des
Teenagers entstehen zwar unmittelbar nach
Studienbeginn an der Wiener Akademie, doch
deren Bildinhalte weisen eindeutig nach Klosterneuburg. Stadt- und Naturlandschaften sind
das vorherrschende Thema der frühen Ölbilder,
die zumeist nach Skizzen vor der Natur entstehen. „Jede freie Stunde war er draußen auf den
Wiesen am Bachbett oder in den Wäldern und
bezeichnete mit Farbstiften Blatt für Blatt seines Zeichenblocks“, so Otto Kunz, ein Freund
der Familie.
The current exhibition focuses on Egon
Schiele’s early paintings. These works were
created shortly after he entered the academy in Vienna while still in his teen years, but
their subjects clearly center on his Klosterneuburg environment. Townscapes and natural landscapes are the prevailing theme of
these early oil paintings, which were mostly
preceded by sketches from nature. „He spent
every free hour outside in the meadows, at
the creek bed or in the woods, drawing with
crayons and filling page after page of his
sketch pad.“

Schiele also achieved his first success on the
exhibition circuit with his early oil paintings.
In 1908, the sixteen-year-old was the youngest participant in a show featuring Klosterneuburg’s most successful artists. It was titled
“Junge Kunst im Stift” (“Young Art at the Monastery”) and contained ten Schiele paintings.

Die Geburtsstadt des Jahrhundertkünstlers
hat sich im letzten Vierteljahrhundert entwickelt. Das Egon Schiele Museum in Tulln, vor
25 Jahren zum hundertsten Geburtstag eröffnet, steht am Beginn dieser Entwicklung. Die
Stadtgemeinde Tulln hat die Würdigung des
„Weltstars“ mit der Eröffnung des Geburtshauses im Jahr 2013 engagiert weiter verfolgt
und im vergangenen Jahr den Egon Schiele
Weg hinzugefügt, der die Kindheit Schieles in
einem Stadtspaziergang erlebbar macht.
Nun entstehen die ersten wichtigen Werke
des Künstlers. Schiele bricht nach und nach
mit dem Naturalismus seiner Zeitgenossen,
beginnt das Schaffen seines Vorbildes Gustav
Klimt zu reflektieren und entwickelt eine Bildauffassung, die sein Werk der nächsten Jahre
prägen wird.
Mit 16 Ölbildern der Jahre 1907 bis 1908 zeigt
das Egon Schiele Museum die umfassendste
Ausstellung, die jemals den frühen Gemälden
Schieles gewidmet wurde. Ermöglicht wird
dies durch die Präsentation der kompletten
Grüner Zaun (Schmiedehof, Klosterneuburg), 1907, Privatbesitz
Green Fence (Blacksmith’s Courtyard, Klosterneuburg), 1907, private collection
diesbezüglichen Bestände der Landessammlungen Niederösterreich, ergänzt durch Werke der Städtischen Sammlung Tulln und aus
Privatbesitz.
Den ersten Ausstellungserfolg feiert Schiele
auch mit seinen frühen Ölbildern. Der Sechzehnjährige stellt 1908 als Junior gemeinsam
mit den erfolgreichsten Künstlern Klosterneuburgs aus. Die Präsentation „Junge Kunst im
Stift“ vereint insgesamt 10 Gemälde Schieles.
Für das Egon Schiele Museum ist nun die Zeit
für eine weitere Veränderung gekommen, die
das Haus für den Besucher in der kommenden
Saison 2016 um wichtige Facetten bereichert
darstellen wird. Im Zentrum dieser neuen
Präsentation wird der Mensch Egon Schiele
stehen und eine sehr emotionale Begegnung
mit dem Künstler ermöglichen. Trotz dieser
Weiterentwicklung ist das Museum auch in der
heurigen Saison mit kleinen, umbaubedingten
Einschränkungen für unsere BesucherInnen
geöffnet.
With regard to Schiele, the native town of
this once-in-a-century artist has undergone
considerable developments over the past
quarter century. It all began with the 1990
opening of The Egon Schiele Museum in
Tulln on the occasion of the centennial of
the artist’s birth. The town of Tulln continued
its endeavors to pay tribute to the „global
super star“ with the 2013 opening of the
Birthplace of Egon Schiele, and last year it
added the Egon Schiele Path, which invites
visitors to experience Schiele’s childhood on
a walk around town.
For the Egon Schiele Museum, the time has
now come for further upgrades that will add
important facets to the experience it offers
to its visitors from the 2016 season. The new
presentation will focus on the man Egon
Schiele and invite the public to a highly emotional encounter with the artist. With only
minor limitations resulting from the ongoing remodeling projects, the museum will be
open to visitors during the current season.
At this point in his life, Schiele created his
first important works. He gradually broke
with the naturalism of his contemporaries,
his style began to reflect the influence of his
friend and mentor Gustav Klimt, and he developed an artistic approach that would shape
his art over the following years.
The current exhibition at the Egon Schiele
Museum features sixteen oil paintings from
1907 and 1908, which makes it the most comprehensive show ever devoted to Schiele’s
early paintings. It brings together the complete respective holdings of Landessammlungen Niederösterreich as well as works from
Städtische Sammlung Tulln and private collections.
