New, state-of-the-art thermal water
pipeline for the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
Im Jahr 1840 wurde die erste Thermalwasserleitung nach Bad Ragaz in Betrieb genommen.
Jetzt, 175 Jahre später, entstand eine neue.

erzählt von seiner Arbeit.
In 1840, the first thermal water pipeline to Bad
Ragaz was completed and put into service. Now,
175 years later, a new one has been created.
Plumbing engineer Sandro Paganini, whose
Chur-based company Paganini Plan AG Integral
built the new state-of-the-art pipeline, tells us
about his work.
Herr Paganini, was macht Ihr Unternehmen und wie
kamen Sie zum Auftrag in Bad Ragaz?
Sandro Paganini: Die Paganini Plan AG Integral macht Planungen im Bereich Sanitär, Heizung, Lüftung, Brandschutz
und Sprinkleranlagen. Zum Auftrag in Bad Ragaz kamen wir,
weil unser Unternehmen grosse Erfahrung im Bau von Mineralwasserleitungen hat. So haben wir vor vielen Jahren die
Leitungen bei der Allegra Passugger Mineralquellen AG saniert. Ausserdem hat unser Unternehmen die Abfüllanlage
der Mineralquelle Rhäzüns geplant und war auch schon für
das Grand Resort Bad Ragaz tätig. Spannend am Auftrag in
Bad Ragaz ist die Tatsache, dass dies erst die dritte Leitung
ist. Die erste war jene aus Holzteucheln, die 1840 in Betrieb
genommen wurde, die zweite die Zuführung aus Eternit Anfang der 1960er-Jahre.
Mr Paganini, what does your company do and how did you
get the contract in Bad Ragaz?
Sandro Paganini: Paganini Plan AG Integral plans projects in
the fields of plumbing, heating, ventilation, fire protection and
sprinkler systems. We were given the contract in Bad Ragaz
because our company has a great deal of experience in constructing mineral water pipelines. For example, we renovated
the pipelines for Allegra Passugger Mineralquellen AG some
years ago. We also planned the filling system used for the

planning the new thermal water pipeline
was an exciting challenge, and one which
you do not come across every day.

What will happen to the old eternit pipeline?
It will remain in place. It’s still in a good condition and is now
being used as a jacket for an emergency pipeline that has
been created in parallel to the new main supply pipeline. In the
future, two pipelines will therefore cover the four and a half

entnommen werden kann. Wir haben uns auch gefragt, ob
das bestehende Felsreservoir noch als Zwischenspeicher
notwendig ist. Ausserdem sind wir der Frage nachgegangen,
welche Bedürfnisse des Grand Resort Bad Ragaz heute und
in Zukunft hat, wie sich also beispielsweise die Kapazitäten
entwickeln sollen.
Rhäzüns mineral spring and we already worked for the Grand
Resort Bad Ragaz as well. What made the job in Bad Ragaz
exciting was the fact that this is only the third pipeline to be
used here. The first was made from wooden pipes and went
into operation in 1840 and the second was made from eternit
at the beginning of the 1960s.
Worauf mussten Sie besonders achten?
Wir haben es mit einer Thermalwasserquelle zu tun, die man
nicht einfach für längere Zeit abstellen kann, denn sie muss
permanent zur Verfügung stehen. Wir mussten also berücksichtigen, dass die Arbeiten im laufenden Betrieb und etappenweise ausgeführt werden müssen. Ausserdem haben wir
die Leitung so geplant, dass sie in einer Tiefe von mindestens
80 Zentimetern verläuft. So ist sie vor Beschädigungen durch
Steinschlag und Temperaturschwankungen geschützt. In der
Taminaschlucht stürzen immer wieder grosse Felsbrocken
herab und wir wissen, dass die alten Leitungen mehrmals in
Mitleidenschaft gezogen wurden. Wir haben uns während
der Projektierungsarbeiten für isolierte Kunststoffrohre der
Fima Jansen im sanktgallischen Oberriet entschieden. Diese
sind dank ihrer Beschaffenheit hervorragend geeignet, Erschütterungen abzufangen. Die Rohre müssen zudem gewährleisten, dass die Temperatur des Wassers konstant
bleibt und das Quellwasser nicht verunreinigt wird.
How did you go about the project?
We started by conducting a study, which included a look at the
technical situation. A dive even took place to find out the con
dition of the spring and of the pumping systems in it. You have
to know that the water can be pumped out of the spring or
taken from the natural overflow. We also asked ourselves
whether it was still necessary to keep the existing rock reser
voir as an interim reservoir, as well as about the Grand Resort
Bad Ragaz’s current and future needs, for example, how cap
acities are likely to develop.
Was passiert mit der alten Leitung aus Eternit?
Die bleibt bestehen. Sie ist immer noch in einem sehr guten
Zustand und dient nun als Ummantelung für eine Notleitung,
die parallel zur neuen, grossen Versorgungsleitung erstellt
wurde. Wir haben also in Zukunft zwei Leitungen, die von der
Quelle hinunter zum viereinhalb Kilometer entfernten Grand
Resort Bad Ragaz führen. Wenn die neue Leitung unterbrochen ist, beispielsweise zu Reinigungszwecken, kann sofort

To what did you have to pay particular attention?
We were dealing with a thermal water spring that you couldn’t
simply turn off for a prolonged period as it has to be perman
ently available. This meant that the work had to be carried out
in stages with the supply still working. We also planned the
pipeline in such a way that it runs at a depth of at least
80 centimetres. This protects it against damage caused by
falling rocks and temperature fluctuations. Large chunks of
rock still occasionally fall from the walls of the Tamina gorge
and we know that the old pipelines fell victim to these several
times. When planning the project, we decided to use insulated
plastic pipes from a company called Jansen based in Oberriet,
St. Gallen. The properties of these pipes make them ideal for
absorbing any vibrations. The pipes also have to ensure that
the water temperature remains constant and that the spring
water does not become polluted.

weisen zu Beginn immer Verunreinigungen auf. Jetzt sind beide Leitungen für den Kurbetrieb im Einsatz.
Gab es besondere Herausforderungen beim Bau der
neuen Leitung?
Sicherlich die hohen Hygieneanforderungen, die an das Thermalwasser gestellt werden. Eine andere Herausforderung
war die Beschränkung der Bauzeit durch den Winter und der
Umstand, dass wir uns in einer Schlucht befinden, die im
Sommer von vielen Touristen besucht wird. Zum Glück war
der vorletzte Winter so mild, dass wir früh mit den Arbeiten
beginnen konnten. Man darf auch nicht vergessen, dass das
Terrain im hinteren Teil der Schlucht sehr heikel ist, weil wir
uns dort in einer Grundwasser-Schutzzone befinden.
Erlebten Sie auch Überraschungen?
Ja, wir stiessen bei der Aushebung des Grabens für die Leitung auf Überreste der alten Holzteuchelleitung von 1840.
Das Holz ist natürlich verrottet, aber die Leitung war noch
gut als solche erkennbar. Wir wussten nicht genau, wo die
früheren Leitungen verliefen, denn darüber gibt es keine Aufzeichnungen. Dass sie sich in unmittelbarer Nähe der Strasse befanden, war aufgrund der Gegebenheiten in der Taminaschlucht aber klar. Trotzdem gab es zwei, drei Stellen, wo
uns der Verlauf der alten Leitungen sehr überrascht hat. Man
bekommt grossen Respekt vor der Leistung der damaligen
Leute, die mit relativ bescheidenen technischen Mitteln innert kurzer Zeit eine derart gut funktionierende Wasserversorgung zustande brachten.

Ragaz. If the new pipeline is shut down, for example to be
cleaned, the emergency pipeline can be instantly switched to.
One thing to note though is that the new supply pipeline has a
larger diameter than the old one. We tested it in January, but
the water was only used for cleaning and rinsing purposes as
new pipelines always have some level of contamination ini
tially. Both pipelines are now being used for the spa.
Did any particular challenges arise when constructing the
new pipeline?
Without a doubt, the high hygiene requirements in relation to
the thermal water. A further challenge was the limited con
struction time due to the winter and the fact that we were
working in a gorge that is visited by a high number of tourists in
the summer. Fortunately, the winter before last was so mild
that we were able to start the work early. You also have to
remember that the terrain in the rear section of the gorge is
extremely delicate as this is a groundwater conservation area.
Were there any surprises?
Yes. On excavating the trench for the pipeline, we came across
the remains of the old wooden pipes from 1840. The wood
was naturally rotten but the pipeline was still recognisable. We
didn’t know the exact course of the early pipeline as there
aren’t any records of this. However, it was clear that it must
have run extremely close to the road due to the conditions in
the Tamina gorge. Despite this, there were two or three places
where the course of the old pipeline surprised us. You have a
huge sense of respect for what the people back then achieved
in building such a well-functioning water supply system in a
very short time with relatively modest technical equipment.
