Spartan Diamond Club Advanced Placement Baseball
After Spring Baseball is complete and the school year is over the Spartan Diamond Club continues to offer
AP baseball to the Denver community. Lead by the coaching staff at Thomas Jefferson High School.
Instruction will be provided to players and coaches through the SDC Fall, Winter and Summer programs.
2014 Fall Instructional Program
The Fall Instructional Program begins Sept. 2nd. All age groups will participate in weekly practices and
games for eight weeks, ending on Oct 26th. Players in 8th through 12th grade will continue training for three
additional weeks. The cost of the program is only $300 for eight weeks of instruction from the TJ coaching
staff. The schedule and program description follow:

Instructional Practice Schedule
WEEK 1- (Sept. 2)BACK TO THE BASICS WEEK (DEFENSE): fundamentals necessary to be a successful defender;
proper footwork, hand eye coordination, ground ball and fly ball progressions, and a detailed arm strength building
routine.
WEEK 2-(Sep 8 & 9) BACK TO THE BASICS WEEK 2 (OFFENSE): In week two of Back to the Basics we will explore
drills used by hitters and the mechanics that make up a successful swing. These drills include various tee, toss and
sight training.
WEEK 3 – (Sep 15 &16) MORE IS BEST WEEK (DEFENSE): This week we focus on several repetitions as we put
our newly acquired fundamentals to the test. This is a high intensity session with the emphasis be on getting a lot
achieved in a short amount of time.
WEEK 4 – (Sep 22 & 23) MORE IS BEST WEEK 2 (OFFENSE): SWINGIT!!! In this workout the focus is on getting
several repetitions with a variety of hitting and base running stations and drills taking place simultaneously.
WEEK 5 – (Sep 29 & 30) SMALL BALL IS SMART BALL (DEFENSE): In this session we explore the difference
between winning and losing as we instruct on aspects such as bunt coverage, tandems, cut off’s, pitchers fielding

practice and 1 and third situations.
WEEK 6 – (Oct 6 & 7) SMALL BALL IS SMART BALL (OFFENSE): This week we continue of the difference between
winning and losing from the offensive side of the game. Topics: Sacrifice bunting, bunting for a hit, hitting behind
runners, the hit and run, base running, and quality at bats.
WEEK 7- (Oct 13 & 14) SPEED DOESN’T SLUMP (SPEED AND AGILITY): In this session we offer a variety of
baseball specific exercises that will increase running speed and lateral movement. Exercises include cones, ladders,
hurdles, medicine balls, bands, and parachutes.
WEEK 8 – (Oct 20 & 21) SWIM FOR STRENGTH: A full baseball specific pool routine certain to leave you wanting
more. This is a full body workout targeted a working the specific muscles used in baseball, great for conditioning,
muscles strength and joints.
Weeks 9, 10 and 11 are for grades 8 through 12 only
WEEK 9 – (Oct 27) SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST (WEIGHTS): In this session we introduce you to the many strength
training and power training lifts and exercises used by players at the highest levels of the game. This session we
target the lower body.
WEEK 10 – (Nov 3) SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST (WEIGHTS 2): Similar to week 9, only now we target the upper
body.
WEEK 11 – (Nov 10) MENTAL TOUGHNESS: The final week of our fall instructional program we visit the most under
estimated aspect of the game. In this session we will teach successful techniques to overcome the adverse situations
and daily grind that is the game of baseball.
