2014 NDBA Ag Credit Conference October 2-3 • Holiday Inn • Fargo ND 2014 NDBA Ag Credit Conference Wednesday, October 1 1:00 p.m. Optional Golf Event at Oxbow Country Club This professionally designed golf course was created by one of today’s most accomplished golf course architects Robert Trent Jones JR. His use of ponds and the famous “Oxbow” lend challenging playability features and natural beauty to the course. Thursday, October 2 8:00-8:30 a.m. Registration & Continental Breakfast 8:30-8:35 a.m. Welcome by NDBA Agriculture Committee Chair Jim Leier 8:35-10:00 a.m. “Straight Talk about Agriculture and the Economy” Dr. David Kohl, Agrivisions, Blacksburg VA The transition and evolution of the agricultural landscape has been fueled by the great commodity super cycle. Record high commodity prices and land values are directly impacted by global and domestic economic variables, making agriculture a high stakes business. Now that the cycle is in transition, what do agribusinesses, producers and lenders need to observe? What are the practices of “cut above” bankers? Don’t miss this high-energy session filled with valuable up-to-date information. 10:15-11:00 a.m. Panel Discussion: “Next Generation Farming and Ranching: Do Your Customers have a Succession Plan?” Session moderated by Dr. David Kohl 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. “The Rise of a Patriarch – The Fall of a Family Business” Doug Box, Box Family Advisors, Dallas TX Doug will share a very personal story of how his father, Cloyce Box, built an oil and gas empire from scratch. Hear how the phenomenal rise of this remarkable man was followed by an equally dramatic fall under Generation 2. The Box story is an all-too-common tale of how a dearth in succession planning contributed to the loss of the business and severely strained a number of family relationships. You’ll leave with a number of key lessons every family enterprise should hear. 12:30-1:30 p.m. Luncheon and Roundtable Discussions 1:30-2:30 p.m. “Lending to Entities in North Dakota” John Foster and Tracy Kennedy, Zimney Foster, Grand Forks ND Foster and Kennedy, in their informative and entertaining way, will cover sole proprietorships, LPs, LLPs, LLLPs, Corps and LLCs. This is a particularly sticky matter, especially when so many farmers cluster up with others every year to form (for example) sugar beet growing entities, such as LPs or Joint Ventures, and sometimes banks get confused as to who or what they are lending to and from whom or what they are taking security, and more often than not the farmer-formed clusters themselves don’t form their entities properly with the State. 2:45-3:45 p.m. “Marketing Topic: How to Trade around USDA Reports” Tom Grisafi, Advance Trading, Demotte IN You won’t want to miss Tom’s interpretation of the markets and how he searches for new opportunities each and every day. 4:00-5:00 p.m. “The Great Industry of Agriculture” Sponsored by: Mike Pearson, Market to Market, Des Moines IA Get ready to laugh and learn as Mike Pearson takes you on an entertaining journey – a look ahead at the outlook for the farm markets and global trends impacting these markets. Farmer, banker and Market To Market host Mike Pearson keeps viewers informed as host of the “Weekly Journal of Rural America.” 5:00-6:30 p.m. Reception “Extraordinary Leadership for North Dakota Banks” 2014 NDBA Ag Credit Conference Friday, October 3 7:15-8:00 a.m. Hearty Breakfast Buffet 8:00-9:30 a.m. “The U.S. Economy in 2014: The Fed and Your Business” Sponsored by: Dr. Edmond Seifried, Lafayette College, Easton PA The Fed began to taper in December 2013 and the move was well received by the markets. Early reaction to the continuation of the tapering in early 2014 was not as positive. Financial market participants must be alert to sudden changes in Fed policy and adjust pricing, lending and investment decisions accordingly. The Fed has declared that it will accelerate the tapering of its bond purchases if labor market and inflation results move towards its longer- run objective. Join us as Dr. Ed reviews the state of the economy and interprets the latest Fed policies. 9:45-10:45 a.m. “Finding the Right Balance in 2014: Agriculture, Politics and More from Washington” John Blanchfield, American Bankers Association, Washington DC Blanchfield returns with a report on the newly passed Farm Bill, takes a skeptical look at the health of the farm economy, and gives an update on the Farm Credit System. Did the debate over the 2014 Farm Bill signal a fundamental change in how future Farm Bills will look? Does the new Farm Bill reduce ag banking risk or increase risk? 10:55-11:35 a.m. “UAV Technology and Using Big Data in Agriculture” Kris Poulson, North Country Ag Services, Casselton ND Discover how data can benefit farmers. Poulson will explain how using processes data to its fullest can help farmers increase yields, minimize inputs, make better marketing decisions and be better overall stewards of the land. The process comes from layering many data sets – such as yield, planted data, weather data, spraying and fertility records, satellite data and data captured from a UAV – together. 11:45 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Closing Luncheon and Speaker: “Separating Your Organization from the Competition” Sponsored by: Steve Scheel, Scheels, Fargo ND Steve will address two opportunities we can relate to: how to separate your organization from all others by making it stand out in the eyes of your customers and how to change some old personal leadership habits to become a much better leader of people. Join us for this inside look at one of North Dakota’s most successful private companies.
