GV TENNIS CLUB - Green Valley Tennis Club

GV TENNIS CLUB
P.O. BOX 224
Green Valley, AZ
April, 2014
PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Hi to all Green Valley
Tennis Club members,
As you probably know by
now, at the special GVTC
Board meeting on March
26th, the Board unanimously approved the implementation of the
online reservation system. Please read Jon
Otto’s article and get
trained on the system in
April so we can go live in
May.
We received many great
comments about checking
the www.GVtennis.com
website for the Senior
Game match schedules
and match rsults. Please
get in the habit of checking the website a least
once a week for announcements and current
events.
Thanks for supporting
the University of Arizona’s women’s tennis team
this season. Their last
home match is at noon on
Saturday April 19th at
1:00pm. We will hopefully see you there! Parking
near the courts is free on
Saturday. Their warmup starts about 12:40 pm
and is always fun to
watch. Then they play
doubles, followed by their
singles matches.
We have a small advance
order of t-shirts (our
Green Valley Tennis
Club logo will be in 3
colors on these) that is
supposed to be available
on Friday April 18th. Buy
one and wear it to the
game to show the U of A
women’s team that the
Green Valley Tennis
Club fans are there and
supporting them! We
will be inviting the
Coach, Vicky Maes, to
bring the team back to
Green Valley for another
practice and exhibition
match in the fall
(probably November). Last time, she
asked us for fan support,
and we have provided it
this year, so hopefully the
team will be back.
Some of us will be using
these new t-shirts as we
solicit sponsors – to put
their names and logos on
the back of the t-shirt –
for the Tennis Club (we
are financing the experiment with personal, not
club, funds). A new
source of additional sponsor revenue should help
us get more of what we
want in cooperation with
GVR – GVR looks more
favorably on funding projects supported with
some club funds. The
Tennis Club submitted
nine project requests for
funding from GVR for the
2015 calendar year including additional courts,
viewing areas and shade
structures. If you know
of any organizations that
are likely to want to be
sponsors of the Tennis
Club, please let me know.
For those of us that are
year-round, we will have a
series of Social Tennis
Mixers about once a month
throughout the Summer to
stay connected. We are
thinking of early morning
and/or evening times
(under the lights) when it
is cooler.
For those of you that are
leaving, we will be ready
for you when you return. Check the online
reservation system to see
the fall/winter court schedules and to sign up for
special events. Even to
reserve your morning
court so you have it ready
for when you arrive!
Thanks,
Brad Stillahn
MESSAGE FROM DON LATHROP
The year as your President
has come to an end and I
hope we on the board have
made Tennis better for the
entire GVR community and
especially the Tennis Club
membership. That was our
goal and I'm sure that will be
the goal of the new board
under Brad's leadership. I
have just come from the
March 26th board meeting
where we heard comments
from many of you on the
recommendation of the task
force on adopting an automated reservation system
called Tennis Bookings.
This is a system that is in
use at over 250 tennis facilities in the U.S. and meets
our requirements to make
the tennis experience even
better here in GVR. Jon
Otto's task force spent hundreds of hours testing vari-
ous systems and has recommended this system for
implementation beginning
in May, 2014. I encourage
all of you to attend the training sessions the implementation team will be holding
and start getting ready for
this improvement to our
reservation system. After
hearing Jon's presentation
the two dozen tennis club
members present over-
whelmingly encouraged the
board to adopt the system. I
enjoyed being your President
and look forward to serving on
the Executive committee this
following year.

GV TENNIS CLUB
Treasurer/Membership
This has been a stellar year for YOUR Green Valley Tennis Club. Our membership is up TO 385 members, well above numbers of previous years, and 5% above last
year. The ball machine, too, has increased it's users, now at 75, roughly a 12% increase. That is great.
Keep up the good work of getting the word out to your fellow non-member players. Let them know how much the club does, to keep the courts running smoothly. Also remind them that we accept dues throughout the entire year and it is only $10. For
those of you who have not received your membership pin, attend the final potluck
(Pizza Party) in April and pick up your pin.
On the money side, the club is in very good financial shape with a balance currently at approximately $6,000, with $10,000 set aside for emergency/long-range projects. We are in a good position to absorb the costs associated with moving our reservation system to an on-line one. Overall, we are staying very close to budget.

Monitors
Folks, when you see a Monitor, thank him/her for their
service to the club! They go
a month between duty days
and are never sure what my
changes might be next time
and that takes loyalty to all
of you! They are doing a
great job for you and if the

online system does what
we hope it will do for reservations, we will all be
extinct soon! Give them
Senior Games
At the potluck and on the website, you can view the hundreds of tennis action shots
from the tennis matches during the Senior Games. Also,
the winners are listed on the
website under
“tournaments”. Special
thanks to photographers Dick
Smith and Sue Taylor Lane,
Tournament Director Rick Ho-
gan (with help from numerous volunteer friends) who
kept the games on track,
and to Jon Otto who kept
the tournament schedule
and results up-to-date on
the www.GVtennis.com
website.
a big thanks!

Have you heard?
Online Tennis Court Scheduling is coming to Green Valley!
The Tennis Club Board has chosen to
move forward in implementing an
Online Tennis Court Scheduling system. We will be using a solution
from Tennisbookings.com. The final
configuration is being put in place
and we hope to bring the system up
in a test mode which we call the
'sandbox' in April. Once up, Tennis
Club members will be sent their
username, temporary password and
the link on the network to login to
the system. GVR members who are
NOT members of the tennis club will
be able to request an account on the
system. To get an account, you, the
tennis club and GVR need to have
the same valid UNIQUE GVR number for you!
You need to have a device which will
give you internet access! Do you
have a computer, iPad, smart
phone, Nook or Kindle Fire? If you
have none, we might be able to help
you.
Once you are logged in, you will be
able to book a court, delete the reservation and put your name on a waiting list for a preferred court. The
system will include all the various
maintenance, community leagues,
drop-ins, clinics, matches, practice
and special events to be held on the
courts.
During the 'sandbox', players will be
able to practice logging in, making
and deleting reservations. They can
get a feel for the system and become
proficient at using the system before
it matters.
We do not know how much support
members will need, to learn to access
the system, but we have a cadre of
volunteers to help members during
the sandbox and into our summer
pilot roll-out. Once we have wireless
access in the Tennis Hut, a Kiosk
computer will appear so that players
may Login and book their court.
The plan is to shut down the
'sandbox' in May, remove all the
practice reservations and input all
the reservations on the white board
at that time, then lock the white
boards in the Hut with instructions
for the online system posted inside.
All existing user accounts will remain in the system. Then open the
system to 'book' courts for real.
There will be some changes, including:
Courts will become available at 4:30
pm – instead of 12:20.
Once open, you can book a court 24
hours a day.
Tennis Club members will be able to
book one court within 7 days.
Non-tennis club members will be able
to book a court within a 5 day
period.
Courts can be booked or deleted up to
24 hours before a reservation.
Court Schedules will be printed from
the Schedule in the system.
It will be to your advantage to book
your own court online, but if you cannot, support folk will be able to book
a court for you.
The Court Schedule will be online for
everyone to see!
A workshop schedule will be posted
at West to learn how to login and use
the system. Support bodies will be
available at 4:30 to help you get into
the system.
User Help is available online at
http://projects.gvtennis.com/
UserHelp.html
Download a copy to print or printed
instructions are also available on
paper.
Don't wait, get online and learn to
use the system ASAP.
Maybe you can help others!
Court Use
Next week is the final week for
scheduled Drop-In afternoon tennis
leagues. This includes Men's and
Women's doubles and singles. Many weeks this season the
courts have been fully utilized. At
times, we have had to rotate people onto courts or have people go
to "Open Courts". All levels of
players have participated and we
had some great play.
Town leagues are continuing into
the summer months.
There will be some Drop-In tennis
this summer. If you are interested
look on the board at West and on
line at the tennis website. East
center continues to have early
morning drop-ins for all interested
players.
Next week is also the last week for
USTA tennis play for the season. Again, it has been a really
busy season. Lots of women's
team play, especially on Mondays
and a couple men's 3.5 and 4.0
teams.
