IT FOR AUSTRIA
Facts and figures about the Austrian federal computing centre (BRZ)
The Federal Computing Centre (BRZ) is the IT service provider and marketleading e-government partner of the Austrian federal administration. As a
full service provider the BRZ offers solutions and services along the entire
IT value chain – from product management to the development and implementation of individual and standard software to secure operation.
The BRZ portfolio includes more than 400 IT applications and e-government solutions (e.g. FinanzOnline, HELP.gv.at). The company also has one
of the largest data centres in the country. Its core market is comprised
of the Federal Ministries, the Federal Chancellery, supreme authorities,
universities and outsourced organizations.
COOPERATION AND CONSOLIDATION PARTNER
Respective of budget constrictions within the administration, the BRZ sets
its focus on maximum cost efficiency and productivity while strengthening
the quality and security of its services. This is achieved through consistent
consolidation, standardization, automation and reuse – i.e. by using industrial methods. Thus, the BRZ has evolved from an e-government administrator to a shared-IT service centre.
Strategic cooperation in the area of cyber security, with the IT economy as
well as with science and research is another important success factor for
the organization.

INNOVATION PARTNER
Through comprehensive analysis of trends in the IT market, the BRZ can provide new technologies in the form of
innovative solutions for its customers. The main topics include cloud computing, mobility, open government data and
big data within the public administration.
Cloud Computing
The use of cloud computing enables the consolidation of IT
structures and the increase of cost efficiency through
shared use of IT resources for the government.
The BRZ has already developed successful cloud solutions,
such as „portal.at“ and „data.gv.at“, winners of the EuroCloud
Award 2012.
Open Government Data
With the aim to create transparency and to strengthen
citizen participation, the administration provides access to
open data for free use, distribution, and further processing. The online data catalog „data.gv.at“ that was technically implemented by the BRZ, allows citizens and the
economy to obtain public government data records online.
Mobility
The trend that information is available regardless of
place and time, has high priority within the administration.
The BRZ is therefore working intensively to develop appropriate mobility solutions. Already realized projects
are the augmented reality public authorities guide app,
the eCustoms-app and mobile optimization of the Business Service Portal and the Austrian Federal electronic
filing system.
Big Data
Together with its customers the BRZ puts emphasis on
big data technologies already today and explores new
areas of application. Ranging from increasing efficiency
in administrative processes to state infrastructure such
as transport, energy and health to security and crime
control: The operating range of analyzing large amounts
of data is varied. Data protection, data security and transparency are always held in the foreground.
