The Smithsonian Institution, Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, will begin interviewing in January for the
following anticipated temporary positions with the Smithsonian Folklife Festival to take place June 24-28 and

Four years college, or three years general experience of which one year is equivalent to at

One full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the IS/GS-5 level

One full year of graduate level education (or superior academic achievement with GPA
of at least 3.0—for GS positions only) or one full year of specialized experience

These positions require only that you demonstrate your experience and ability to complete the tasks
assigned with no more than normal supervision.
POSITION DESCRIPTIONS FOR THE 2015 SMITHSONIAN FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL
Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage
Event Positions
Financial Administrative Assistant: Works directly with the Administrative Officer in all the financial aspects
of the Festival. Prepares purchase order data and petty cash vouchers; makes data entries; files as needed.
Program Coordinator: Coordinates Festival program under supervision of curator. Serves as liaison with
Technical Director, Volunteer Coordinator, and Supply Coordinator regarding site arrangements, with Participant
Coordinator regarding participant services, and with Editor and Art Director regarding printed material.
Social Media Coordinator: Assists with updating, editing, maintaining, and creating content for CFCH websites
such as Festival website, blogs, newsletters, and social media sites. May also include entering data into templates,
updating HTML pages, and preparing images, graphics, photos, video and audio files.
Design Assistant: Assists the design staff with all event designs such as program book, brochures, exhibition and
general signs, banners, T-shirts, posters, fliers, small publications, maps, badges, meal tickets, and participant
certificates.
Program Assistant: Assists Program Curator and Program Coordinator in developing the program; determines
participant and site needs and assists in carrying out various program details.
Participant Coordinator: Assists the administrative and program staff in making all logistical arrangements for
event participants. Supervises and assigns tasks to the Participant Assistants; prepares all correspondence for
participants. Makes travel, housing, and other arrangements necessary for participants.
Participant Assistants: Assists the Participant Coordinator in making logistical arrangements for event
participants; helps prepare correspondence for participants. Makes travel, housing, and other arrangements.
Supply Coordinator: Works closely with all programs to identify and purchase site supplies. Works to find
companies that will donate supplies.
Assistant to Festival Director: Provides clerical assistance to the Festival Director. Gives organizational support,
using software such as Microsoft Office, including word processing, filing, and data entry. Maintains the calendar
and schedules appointments for the Festival Director and makes arrangements for time, participants, and location
of meetings.
Craft Sales Assistant: Assists the Marketplace Coordinator in Festival Marketplace with inventory, floor
management, and display.
Housing Coordinator: Works with administrative staff as liaison between CFCH, participant staff, and hotel to
insure that participant needs are met. Responsible for insuring that all financial data is in compliance with hotel
contract agreement.
Volunteer Assistant: Assists the Volunteer Coordinator in all aspects of recruiting, scheduling, and managing
volunteers.
Supply Assistant: Assists the Supply Coordinator with procurement of all supplies.
Transportation Coordinator: Coordinates all transportation needs of the Festival including airport and train
station pickups and ongoing transportation to the Festival site.
Transportation Assistant: Assists Transportation Coordinator to schedule and coordinate all transportation needs
of participants during the Festival.
Event Site Positions (primarily outdoors on the National Mall, constructing the Festival site)
Assistant Technical Director/Foreman: Assists Technical Director with on-site production and scheduling of
labor resources, materials, and supplies. Develops systems, plans, and schedules to meet the on-time technical
production requirements for the Festival. Foreman manages CFCH warehouse.
Administrative Technical Assistant: Provides a variety of ancillary office support functions to the Technical
Director and Exhibit Workers during production of the Festival. Provides general clerical assistance, orders
supplies, answers telephone calls, receives deliveries, and serves as timekeeper.
Carpenter: Performs all skilled carpentry work for the Festival under the direction of the Technical Director.
Electrician: Installs, repairs, troubleshoots, and modifies new and existing electrical systems for the Festival,
under the direction of the Technical Director.
Exhibit Workers: Provide labor for the site preparations, site maintenance, and construction for the Festival.
Work under the general direction of the Technical Director.
Exhibit Worker/Driver: Works under the general direction of the Technical Director in the CFCH warehouse
and drives box truck between the warehouse and Festival site to deliver.
Supply Coordinator/Warehouse: Works under the general direction of the Technical Director in the CFCH
warehouse to manage the flow of equipment and supplies from the Warehouse to the Festival site and return.
Assists in managing the storage of Festival items in the warehouse post Festival.
