The study and research in folklore are going on in different ways in India. In this context the role of Calcutta University, Gauhati University and Mysore University were really praise worthy. Since the post independent period the study and cultivation of folklore have widely been popularized in different Indian Universities under different departments. Folklore studies in South India have been enhanced to a great extent. The study folklore has also achieved a remarkable place in the Eastern region too. University of Kalyani has taken a lead by setting up a full-fledged Folklore Department in the year 1990. Developmental strategies in folklore studies have also been taken in North-East India also. Multidisciplinary co-ordinated approach and synthesis have been devised in this zone of the country. This venture will add greatly to our understanding of the very important folk traditions of the Eastern and North-East zone of India and promote the exchange of folkloristic discourses and we will be able to judge the progressive growth of the study of folklore and tribal studies as an academic discipline in Eastern and North-East India. It needs to be emphasized that we look forward to present multidimensional approach of our cultural heritage. Established in 1990, the Department of Folklore is one of the few departments in the country devoted exclusively to the academic pursuit of Folkloristics.
