Dental Assistants, classified as DA II.
Program Description
This course is designed to prepare the DA II for core competency in coronal polishing as mandated by the NC Dental Practice
Act. This course includes three hours of didactic lecture and a four hour clinic session.
Please reserve the entire day on January 17 in the event that an afternoon session must be considered due to high registrations.

Objectives
Upon completion of this evidence-based program, the participant will be able to:
• Discuss the dental laws of N.C., as they pertain to coronal polishing. Describe the importance of a medical history prior to
coronal polishing. Discuss the indications and contraindications for coronal polishing. Differentiate between extrinsic and
intrinsic stains;
• Explain examples of intrinsic and extrinsic stains;
• Differentiate between the abrasive agents commonly utilized in coronal polishing;
• Identify the abrasive that should be used for various types and amounts of stain;
• Identify the correct armamentarium for coronal polishing. Describe the components of a stable fulcrum;
• Demonstrate the use of a stable fulcrum in all areas of the mouth. List the steps of the coronal polish procedure;
• Demonstrate the correct coronal polish technique utilizing the slow speed handpiece;
• Demonstrate the correct stroke utilized when polishing coronal surfaces of a tooth;
• Describe the importance of flossing, oral hygiene instruction, and application of topical fluoride following coronal polish;
• Describe control measures to be utilized in order to maintain optimal patient safety; and
• Demonstrate the understanding of tooth morphology required for proper identification of adult and child dentition.

Special Instructions
• Attendance is required both days.
• The participant must bring a patient for the Saturday clinical session. This patient must not have the medical need to be
premedicated with an antibiotic prior to any dental procedure. A medical history of the patient must be returned to Director
of Dental CE by January 9, 2015 for complete review. Please choose a reliable patient.
• On day two, all students must bring a slow speed handpiece or a hygiene handpiece capable of accepting disposable prophy
angles. If the student must bring a handpiece which does not accept disposable angles, the student must bring their own
prophy angle with the appropriate rubber prophy cups that is compatible to the handpiece. A slow speed handpiece will not
be provided for participants.
• Each participant must bring their own disposable items:
disposable prophy angles, patient napkin, saliva ejector, 2x2 gauze per person, personal protective equipement - mask, safety
glasses, lab coat - napkin chain, a box of examination gloves, air water syringe tip, floss, fine grit prophy paste and sample size
tube of toothpaste.
Each participant must complete the following forms and return to Barbara Smith at SR-AHEC by January 9, 2015:
1. Proof of Professional Liablility Insurance–required
2. Proof of meeting qualifications for DA II as determined by the NC Board of Dental Examiners
3. Patient Consent form
4. Patient Medical history
Upon registration, please contact Barbara Smith to obtain the above mentioned forms. This is required or participation in the
class will not be possible. Please request these documents promptly.
