2 Unlike a rich person, Soapy had only a few needs. What were they?
Soapy desired food every day, a bed every night, pleasant company and a place where he was safe from
the cold north wind and from cops.
3. What did Soapy plan to do at the Broadway restaurant? On what grounds would the cops arrest
him?
Soapy planned to eat dinner and inform the restaurant that he had no money to pay the bill. They would
call the police and send him to the prison.
4. Why was Soapy not arrested for stealing the umbrella?
As he picked the silk umbrella, a man came for it. Soapy asked him to call the police. The man
apologized and said he had found the umbrella the same morning and if it was Soapy’s, it ought to be
with him. The umbrella man hurried away.
5. Why was Soapy finally arrested?
Soapy was arrested for hanging around a neighbourhood in a suspicious manner. He argued with the
policeman who questioned him about being there.
6. What happens in the end is surprisingly the opposite of what Soapy or the reader had expected.
This is called irony. Can you point out a few other ironical moments in the story?
Throughout the story Soapy kept trying to get himself arrested and sent to prison for three months so
that he could be comfortable there during winter. All his attempts were in vain. At the end when he
gathered the courage to reform himself and decided to take up a job, he was arrested and sent to
prison.
7. Does this story make you laugh or does it make you sad? Give reasons for your answer.

And now the weather forecast for the next twenty four hours. Most of the country will be
overcast. The temperature will be low. However, gusty winds are expected and in some parts of
the country there will be light showers. Over hills and near the western coast there will be
isolated patches of fog. The monsoon is expected to hit the western coast by early next week.
