Southeast Georgia Towns Take A Stand On ‘Sanctity Of Life’ Sunday
Photos By MYRA THRIFT
Devoted Christians in Waycross (above), Nahunta (center), Hoboken, Blackshear
and Folkston gathered in
“life chains” in their towns
Sunday to show their support in seeking an end to
abortions during the annual
celebration of “Sanctity of
Life” Sunday. Supporters of
Bible teachings that abortion
is murder stood shoulder-toshoulder in these south
Georgia towns holding signs
saying “Abortion Kills Children,” “Adoption is a Loving
Choice,” “Lord Forgive Us
and Our Nation,” “Jesus Forgives and Heals” and “Adoption Not Abortion.” One little
boy held a sign that read:
“Choose Life, My Mom Did.”
From 2:30 until 3:30 p.m.
these devoted followers of
Bible teachings held their
signs, waved at passers-by
and called on everyone to
search their hearts in support of the births and not
abortion of innocent babies.
In the town of Hoboken, a
large field of tiny white
crosses (bottom) has been
created using PVC pipes, all
tied with either pink or blue
ribbon to designate a boy
and a girl. A large sign behind the crosses reads
“celebrate life because
life is precious.” These
tiny crosses are located
just west of the traffic
light in Hoboken, alongside the South Georgia
Parkway (U.S. 82). At
every location, drivers
honked their horns in
support of those standing
holding signs and no
doubt in support of an
end to the scourge of
abortion. Records show
that an estimated 50 million babies have been
aborted since 1973.
SELMA, Ala. (AP) — Oprah
Winfrey and fellow actors from
the movie “Selma” marched with
hundreds in a tribute to Martin
Luther King Jr., one of many
events around the nation ushering
in today’s federal holiday for the
slain civil rights leader.
The annual Martin Luther
King Jr. Day parades were
taking place in Blackshear this
morning and at noon in Waycross.
Remembrances of the King
legacy come amid somber reflection by many on incidents in which
unarmed black men were killed by
police in recent months, spurring
protests and heightening tensions
in the U.S. In Ferguson, Mo.,
where one fatal shooting caused
weeks of violent protests, leaders
urged reforms to the criminal justice system in the name of equality.
“We need to be outraged when
local law enforcement and the
justice system repeatedly allow
young, unarmed black men to encounter police and then wind up
dead with no consequences,” said
U.S. Rep. William Clay, a St.
Louis Democrat. “Not just in Ferguson, but over and over again
across this country.”
The King holiday, meanwhile,
was being met with activities nationwide, including plans for a
wreath-laying in Maryland, a tribute breakfast in Boston and volunteer service activities by
churches and community groups
in Illinois. In South Carolina,
civil rights leaders readied for
their biggest rally of the year.
Winfrey helped lead a march
by hundreds on Sunday with
“Selma” director Ava DuVernay
and actor David Oyelowo, who
played King in the movie.
“Selma” chronicled turbulent
events leading up to the historic
march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, and the subsequent passage of the 1965 Voting
Rights Act. Winfrey played activist Annie Lee Cooper in the
movie, which was nominated for
two Oscars, in categories of best
picture and best original song.
A producer on the film, Winfrey praised the 1965 marchers
for their courage in meeting
fierce opposition on the Edmund
Pettus Bridge in Selma — scene
of Sunday’s remembrance march.

to do with so little, and look at

had eluded police in several states while
raising alarm.
“I spoke to Dalton and he was very
scared, and he wanted to come home,”
said Norman Chaffins, the sheriff of
Grayson County, Kentucky, where the
teens live. “He wanted me to come bring
him home.”
Chaffins told The Associated Press the
teens should be extradited back to Ken-

On Monday, Hayes was scheduled to
make an 8:30 a.m. court appearance via
video hookup, according to the Bay

area. Hayes was being held Sunday on a
charge of custodial interference.
Florida’s Department of Children &
Families was called to assist Panama
City Beach Police, but Phillips was not
in the state’s custody, said DaMonica
Rivas, a DCF spokeswoman. “The juvenile has been taken to a safe location
until arrangements with the family are
made,” Rivas said.
Authorities said the U.S. Marshal’s
Service and Panama City Beach Police
discovered Hayes and Phillips asleep in a
car stolen from Georgia.
In Kentucky, the two teens will face
charges including burglary, theft, criminal trespassing and criminal mischief,

Chaffins said he was relieved the crime
