SCWS celebrates the seasons
Holiday Lunch at the Center was a jolly good time! There were photos with Santa,
jingle bells and Christmas carols with Bonnie Birch on the accordion December 2nd
and Cheri Adams on piano and vocals December 9th. A record number of holiday
lunches were served during December thanks in part to our gracious sponsors: Katie
Krause of The Kenney and Deneka Sarkies & Tina Bendermacher of Brookdale at
Admiral Heights. Photos courtesy Gail Ann and Joanne Murray.

Congratulations to Janet Backman
She’s the lucky winner of the quilt “Autumn
Weaves”. It was created and donated to the
Center by our amazing quilting club. More
than $2,000 was donated to the Center due
to the hard work of our quilters who sold all
of those raffle tickets, not to mention the
countless hours put in to create the quilt!
Thanks go out to our quilting club and to
everyone who helped make this a great
success. (Please see page 9 for information
if you are interested in quilting.)
Inclement weather policy: The West Seattle Senior Center will be closed when
the Seattle School District is closed due to inclement weather.
SCWS HIghlights- January/February 2015
Welcome 2015 !!
Can you believe it? It’s a brand
new year, ushering in fantastic opportunities for growth and new
challenges to overcome. This center thrives because of the love and
care of our members, volunteers,
sponsors, donors, and our board of
directors who collectively and individually, ensure our success.
Thank you to each and every one of you for your many gifts
of time, talent and donations.
City of Seattle Award
I am happy to report that we received $90,000.00 this year
toward the continuation of our mission. The money was not
earmarked this year to any specific area, but to the overall
operations of the center, including lifelong learning, food and
nutrition offerings, physical activities, socialization and social services. In addition, access to medical and legal services.
Thank you to the City of Seattle for your generous support!
Fall Appeal Letter Update
As I write this, so far we have received $16,522.17 toward
our goal of $25,000.00. We are getting closer to our goal
every day and it’s not too late to make your donation. You
can save a stamp and leave it at the front desk!
In addition, I continue working with the City’s Neighborhood Matching Fund Grant and our HVAC system is scheduled to be installed in March 2015. Just in time for summer!
Thank you all for your donations! Aylene and her team are
going to have a cool summer!
Liquor License Update
Good news! We have secured our 2015 liquor license. The
new annual license will run from January 1-December 31st,
and be in effect at all times, not only at special events. We
are attracting more baby boomers and many other folks who
would like to enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail at various
dinners or dances. This license helps us to grow by adding
more offerings, attracting a more diverse crowd, and increases our bottom line.
Welcome New 2015 Board Members!
Our new Board members are: Alan Mendelssohn, Susan
Duffy-Kane, James Edwards and Sarah Cecil.
The Executive Committee is: President - David Robertson,
Vice president- Peter Gallagher, Secretary - Annabelle
Larner, and Treasurer- Colleen Barnes.
Board meetings our held the on the second Wednesday of
each month at 5:30 pm in the Nucor Room. If you want to
address the board, please contact Dave Robertson at the e2
www.sc-ws.org
mail address below to ask for time and give a brief synopsis of
your agenda. He can then adjust the agenda and possibly make
time for the presentation. Please send your questions to the
board at [email protected].
Senior Services Task Force Update
The focus of the Task Force is to research and identify one or
more options that will serve the best interest of all seniors,
their communities, Senior Centers, and Senior Services. As of
the last board meeting on December 4th, two subcommittees
have been formed.
1. The first committee will be exploring and researching alternatives to the current MOA (memorandum of agreement).
2. The second committee will be working in Community Engagement with Senior Center Directors, their boards and members to
uncover best solutions for moving forward into the future.
It is difficult to know what the outcomes will be, but we will
keep you informed along the way.
I appreciate everyone’s support during the transitions and
changes we have all been facing together. It is my great honor
to serve and to nurture this center and to work within this great
community. Together we can accomplish anything!
In gratitude and in service of our seniors,
Lyle Evans, Interim Executive Director

From our Volunteer / Outreach Coordinator...
A Happy New Year
to you all…and a huge
THANK YOU to our
wonderful volunteers
who’ve contributed their
time with us over the last
year!
2015 is here, and it’s the
time of year where we all
have resolutions that we
try to follow through with. If you haven’t yet had a chance
to share your many talents with us, now is the time to be
the change you want to see in the world…become a volunteer at our Center! Whether you have a few hours a month
or a few hours a week, we need your help to keep our
Center thriving and expanding.
Remember: Nobody can do everything, but everyone can
do something. Come in today and find out what that
something is for you. You’ll be happy you did and you
might even make new friends and learn new skills along
the way.
Let’s start off the year with a single act of kindness, and
watch it grow!
Share your time & love your life!

Another incredible
gift to the center!
What is square, white and bigger than a bread box? If you
haven’t seen it yet, it’s in Hatten Hall. It is our beautiful
new LE refrigerator replacing the old leaking one. This
fabulous new appliance was given to us by member, Sharon
Utt. We haven’t had the funds to consider purchasing one,
let alone a “brand spankin” new one, but Sharon saw the
need and came to us offering to purchase a new one.
Thank you Sharon! What an incredible gift.
■ Winter Blues
Wednesday, January 14 11:45am to 1:00pm
The holidays are over, the “festivals of lights” are
doused, but it’s still awfully dark outside most of the
time! Are you a Seattle native who finds cold, damp air
and grey skies invigorating? Or does the dreary weather
and the long- gone hype of the holidays get you down?
Join our discussion about mood, to find out how much a
change in mood is just a natural part of living in Seattle
in the winter and when it’s a problem that needs to be
addressed.
Facilitators: Carl Kaiser and Daniel Widner, from City
of Seattle Aging and Disability Services.

Volunteer Extraordinaire - Suzanne Duffy-Kane
If you’ve come to the Center on a Tuesday afternoon, it is quite certain you’ve had the
pleasure of meeting our wonderful and multi-talented front desk receptionist, Suzanne.
A genuine people person, she truly enjoys meeting and helping all of the guests that
come through our door. Since 2011, she has been assisting seniors and SCWS staff in
any way she can to support our efforts and mission. She helps to train new receptionists, and also contributes to updating and writing our front desk manual. A dependable
volunteer, Suzanne is always offering to cover other receptionist shifts when needed,
and can be counted on 100%.
From fall to spring, Suzanne offers Conversational Spanish classes here at the Center,
which she finds delightful, sharing experiences with class members about Hispanic
culture. She has a B.S. in Sociology, as well as degrees in Spanish, Bilingual Education, and Astrology. And if that isn’t diverse enough, she is also a professional Astrologer, and Reiki Master, and twice a month offers half hour Reiki sessions which have
become very popular. Another passion for her is being “Queen Mum” of the West
Seattle Red Hatters.
She is a lover of languages and cultures, has an avid interest in the Occult, likes to stay physically and mentally fit, is a
foodie, and has a special fondness for her Lhasa Apso “puppy,” Killah, who she rescued at age 10. Her three children and 7
grandchildren are spread out between Chicago and Seattle, and she is a West Seattle resident for the last 10 years. She says
West Seattle is like an old shoe, comfortable, like a friend you meet and they feel as if you’d known them before in a
previous life.
She loves contributing to and supporting the Center while getting to know all the people she meets here and forming
friendships. She has found the experiences and perspectives on life she gains here invaluable and enriching. We are so
grateful that she shares her time, knowledge and passions with us, and we send a big shout out of THANKS her way!

Health & Wellness: Holly’s Hints - Resources for Caregivers
ANONYMOUS: “I live out of town, and I am concerned about my brother in West Seattle. He
says he is no longer able to manage his finances. He is continually overdrawn at the bank, and he
has forgotten to pay his rent for 2 months in a row. How can I help him?”
Holly’s Hints:
When someone is having problems managing their money and are at risk for losing their housing
as a result, they may want to consider hiring a protective payee or representative payee to manage
their funds on their behalf. A representative payee is someone (or an agency) appointed by a
government agency to act as a substitute to receive and manage the benefits owed to a recipient.
Agencies using representative payeeships for benefits include: Social Security Administration,
Veterans Administration, Department of Defense, Railroad Retirement Board, and Office of
Personnel Management (federal employee retirement) The representative payee must use the government benefits on
behalf of the beneficiary for the beneficiary’s personal care or well-being.
There are a few agencies in Seattle that provide this service; some are nonprofit groups that charge a nominal monthly fee,
set by Social Security, and others that charge more money due to the amount of funds from additional sources that they
manage on behalf of the recipient. One nonprofit agency here in Seattle is Share and Care House. They contract with
Social Security Administration (SSA) to provide Representative Payee Services to beneficiaries whom SSA determines to
be in need of assistance in managing their finances. Specialists work closely with the participants, care providers, and
social workers setting up budgets with the goal of meeting their basic needs and beyond. Share & Care House is accountable to SSA and the clients for the accurate management of the benefits submitted to Share & Care House on behalf of the
participants. SSA currently sets the monthly fee for this service at $38.00 or 10% of the beneficiaries income, whichever is
less. This fee is often covered through Medicaid programs and may not directly impact the participant.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions after reading the below, and/or you would like more information
about Protective Payees.

As the United States grew in size, it became involved in
conflicts with Native Americans, Canadians, and Mexicans
before a civil war caused in part by a dispute over slavery
in the territories that nearly severed the nation.
This course will focus on the causes and results of these
conflicts and will use motion pictures to help us better
understand them.
(Note: If necessary, Make up day is March 13.)

This popular AARP program has recently been updated
and covers current changes in roads, automobiles, state
laws and driving situations. It is especially aimed for
drivers 50 and over. Topics include how driving can be
affected by changes in medicine, vision, hearing, reaction time and how to compensate for aging and age
related situations. We feel that after com-pleting this
program you will improve at least one of your driving
skills, if not several.
This is an 8 hour course completed over two, four hour
sessions. No driving is included and no formal tests are
given. At the end of the course you will receive a certificate good towards a discount on your auto insurance.

Recipe of the Month, Chef Murray
Local farmers support the Center
I wanted to thank the West Seattle Farmer’s Market for
partnering with us every Sunday! Tonnemaker, Alm Hill
Garden and Kirsop Farms each contributed fresh, local
organic vegetables to the Center. How great is that?
We use these every day in our soups and for our fantastic
lunches in the Junction Diner.
Thank you farmer’s for your
support! This really helps keep our
food cost down and helps create
fresh nutritious additions to our
menu.
Winter Comfort Food - Recipe of the Month
By Marja Murray, Chef, West Seattle Senior Center
What could be better on a cold winter’s day than a bowl of
comforting warm soup? Here is one of my favorite “go- to”
recipes for the winter months - Split Pea Soup. I love this soup
because it is flavorful and also good for you. Split Peas help to
reduce cholesterol and reduce blood sugar levels, plus they taste
good! This recipe is also very easy. You can make a batch and
freeze the rest for another day. Adapted from Greg Atkinson, one
of my favorite local chefs.
Split Pea Soup ~ Serves 8
6.5 cups water
1 bay leaf
1 tablespoon kosher salt
2 cups (1 pound) split green peas
3 medium carrots, peeled
1 medium onion, peeled
3 stalks of celery
1/4 cup olive oil or organic canola oil
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste (see note below)
* Place water, bay leaf and salt in a soup pot on high heat
and bring to a rolling boil. Add the split peas, cover, and
reduce heat to low.
* Cut the carrots, onion and celery into a 1/4 inch dice. Put
the olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat and
sauté the vegetables until they soften and just begin to
brown, about 10 minutes.
* Then add the sautéed vegetables to the soup pot and
continue to simmer while stirring occasionally so the soup
doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan, and until the split
peas start to break down, about 45 minutes.
* For the final touch, season to taste with freshly ground
black pepper. Remove the bay leaf and serve hot with
cornbread or biscuits.
Chef’s Note: Make sure your black pepper is still potent. It is key
to this recipe. Spices that stay in your pantry longer than the
recommended time start losing their flavor. Whole black pepper
corns can be stored up to 4 years in a cool dry location, and
ground black pepper for up to 2 years.

Film History Course
Pass the popcorn, please...
Come enjoy our new movie experience! We are putting
those old tattered cardboard blackout pieces in the Nucor
Room in the Recycle Bin! NEW blackout curtains are
arriving courtesy of our “Movie Master” Terry Holm! Our
sincere gratitude goes to Terry for his generosity. Besides
this, he even donated “seed” money to create an account
towards new curtains for Hatten Hall.
Want to help out too? Please mark donations as Hall
curtains.
Pass the popcorn, please! ... and please thank Terry next
time you see him.

WEST SEATTLE REAL ESTATE AGENT
Specializing in helping seniors
with all the moving and selling details.
As a John L. Scott agent that serves the Seattle area, I understand not only
the technological power of the internet, but also its limitations. While
clients can obtain a wealth of information virtually, they cannot get the
true picture of the neighborhoods, commute, lifestyle, etc - this is where I
truly excel in finding not only the perfect property for my clients but the
lifestyle they desire.
