Machigai Podcast Episode 019 KAZUMI: So, Tim, I got to talk to my friend Junko! TIM: Oh, the friend who invited you to her wedding? KAZUMI: That's right. The ceremony is this week. She seems really happy! TIM: That's great! Who's the lucky guy? KAZUMI: His name is Satoshi. He's an engineer. She told me he proposed her on a Tokyo Bay cruise! TIM: He proposed her? KAZUMI: そうです！すごく ロマンチックでし ょう？ TIM: Well, yes it is, but you should say he proposed TO her. KAZUMI: "Proposed TO her"? どうして「to」が 必要なんですか。 TIM: Well, "to propose" means "to suggest something." It can be used in many other situations. At a business meeting, a new business idea can be "proposed". KAZUMI: じゃあ、「提案」とかの意味なんですね。 TIM: Right. So what Satoshi was proposing was marriage. He proposed marriage to her. He didn't propose her! KAZUMI: ああ、「propose her」というと、「彼女を提案した」という意 味になってしまうんですね！なるほど！ TIM: Right! It's not the same as proposing the construction of a building! KAZUMI: じゃ、どうして「propose marriage」ではなく、「propose」だけ 言うんですか。 TIM: Well, you know, sometimes the meaning is understood from the context, or from often being used in a certain way. KAZUMI: 結婚とお酒？それはちょっといやな比べ方ではないですか。 TIM: Sorry.... (keitai sound) Is that your phone? HOW DO YOU SAY IT? KAZUMI: It's a message from my friend Kenji. He's also going to the wedding. TIM: What did he say? KAZUMI: He got a new suit for the wedding ... and he told me to iron his pants. TIM: What? Why...? Geez... KAZUMI: What's wrong? TIM: Several things. You kind of overloaded my brain there for a second. KAZUMI: Oh. Sorry! TIM: No problem. OK, first of all, pronunciation mistake. KAZUMI: そうですね。「How do you say it」ですからね。 TIM: (laugh) Right. OK, you shouldn't say "AIRON." The correct pronunciation is "IERN." KAZUMI: Really? The spelling certainly doesn't look like that. TIM: Well, you know, English spelling is almost as difficult as kanji! KAZUMI: ああ、そうかも知れませんね！漢字みたいに英語のスペルを見 ても分からないですよね、時々！ TIM: Anyway, so the pronunciation is "iern." KAZUMI: Iern. TIM: But also, why is Kenji telling you to iron his pants? Is he your husband? KAZUMI: No... He's not even my boyfriend! TIM: I didn't think so! Tell him to iron his own pants! TIM: Ah, I see. I think you meant to say, "He told me that he was going to iron his pants." KAZUMI: He told me that he was going to iron his pants. 彼がズボンにアイロ ンをかけるそうですね。 TIM: OK. But if you say "he told me to", I think you mean meirei shita. KAZUMI: ああ、なるほど。全然命令してませんよ！ TIM: Good. You shouldn't be taking orders from people....Oh, by the way, could you do the dishes for me? KAZUMI: No way! ##### TIM: So how was the wedding? KAZUMI: It was beautiful! Junko and Satoshi look so happy together. And they're taking their honeymoon in Spain! Wow... I hope someday I can get married with somebody... TIM: You mean "married TO". KAZUMI: "Married to"? TIM: Yes. I can see why you might think "with" would be correct. But we say "to". Think of the two people going toward each other, coming together, becoming attached TO each other... KAZUMI: お互いに繋がり合っているんですね。だから「to」というんで すね。 TIM: Yes. By the way, did I ask you to wash the dishes?
